| Brandon Kahle Beach Brandon Kahle Beach was born Jan. 16, 1998, in Lawton to T.J. and Diane Beach. He died Monday, Jan. 17, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus. Brandon was a sports fanatic. He loved to play football, baseball, basketball and golf. Beach was a big Sooner fan and he loved going to games with his family. Beach enjoyed watching his two big brothers, Jason and Jordan, play football, baseball and basketball. He loved to go to work farming with his dad and help his mom in the kitchen. His favorite things to make were pancakes and cookies. Beach enjoyed playing with his brothers, friends and his cousins. He attended Sunday school at the First Baptist Church of Altus. We loved our Brandon dearly for the seven years and one day that he blessed our lives. We miss him so much but know that he is with our heavenly Father. | LORRAINE BRINK Anna Lorraine Brink, age 65, of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2006 in Oklahoma City after a long-term illness. Lorraine was born on April 20, 1940 in Jellico, Tennessee to Raymond and Mahala (Conley) Jones. Lorraine married LTC (RET) Ronald H. Brink on February 27, 1960 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Before her passing, Lorraine and Ron enjoyed forty-five wonderful years of marriage. Lorraine and Ron moved to Altus in 1995 from Okmulgee. They were an Air Force family and lived in many communities during Ron’s career. Everywhere Ron and Lorraine lived she took care of the home and family that she so dearly loved. Being involved in every activity that her children were engaged in she ran concessions at youth sports, was a cheerleader mom, a Boy Scout den leader and a Girl Scout leader. Lorraine cared about people and was a full-time volunteer for the American Red Cross for over ten years at Fort Ritchie, Maryland and Blytheville, Arkansas. She was also a member of the Jaycettes. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Helen Jones. Survivors include her husband LTC (RET) Ronald H. Brink, daughters; Rhonda Lynn Wells and husband LTC Thomas Wells of Eastampton, New Jersey, Nancy Marie Stone and husband Robert T. Stone of Dover, Pennsylvania, son; LTC Randy Brink and wife Colleen of Wichita, Kansas, brothers; Raymond C. Jones, Jr. and wife Eunice of Marietta, Georgia and Larry Jones and wife Gloria of Knoxville, Tennessee, three sisters; Betty Lou Swearengin and husband Darrell of Knoxville, Tennessee, Jane Garner and husband JB of Louisville, Tennessee, and Katherine Williams and husband Jim of Knoxville, Tennessee. | BRYCE Heather Dawn Bryce, age 17, passed away early Sunday morning, January 22, 2006 as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Kiowa County. She was born November 16, 1988, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Gene and Patricia (Whelan) Bryce. Heather was attending the Altus Public School System and was currently a junior at Altus High School. A member of the First Baptist Church youth group, Heather was involved in many activities all of her life which included Girl Scouts, 4-H, and was an honor student in elementary and junior high school. She previously was on the dance team at Altus High School, a starter on the Altus High School Tennis Team, a member of Who- Who’s of American High School Students, and Young Women’s Leaders Club. Heather was also very active in her church youth group. Heather loved listening to music, playing tennis, watching her dad race, snow skiing, water skiing, and was looking forward to attending the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Cadet Lawmen’s Academy. Heather’s greatest enjoyments were dancing and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her dad and mom, Gene and Patricia Bryce of Altus, Oklahoma; one brother, Gene David Bryce of Edmond, Oklahoma; one sister Kelly Lynn Bryce of Altus, Oklahoma; special sisters, Katie Peterson of Edmond, Oklahoma, Lauren Smith of Altus, Oklahoma, Jenna West of Fairfax, West Virginia, and Amanda Church of Altus, Oklahoma. | Monnie Louise Burlingame Monnie Louise Burlingame age 74, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2006, at Cape Coral, Florida. She was born March 9, 1931, to Guy Newcomb and Eddie Nolan in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On September 21, 1948, Monnie Louise Newcomb and George Burlingame Jr. were united in marriage in Mertzon, Texas. | BONDS Zena Leota Bonds, age 88 of Altus, passed away early Thursday morning, September 14, 2006 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Leota was born on November 18, 1917, to James Alexander and Hattie Loucinda (Stephens) Henderson at Pleasant Point near Friendship, Oklahoma. Graduating from Pleasant Point High School, she married Howard Bonds in Hollis on September 14, 1937, and they spent fifty-eight wonderful years together before his death in 1996. Leota will be remembered by many for over twenty years of cooking for the Altus Public Schools at Wilson and Rivers Elementary Schools. Leota and Howard ran the Altus Bus Station for many years where she also cooked in the Bus Station Café. A member of the Duke First United Methodist Church, Leota loved her God and enjoyed singing and listening to gospel music. Fishing, camping and spending time with her family whom she dearly loved were her favorite pastimes. Known as the Atlanta Braves number one fan, Leota could always take in a game of baseball. | BURBANK James Albert Burbank, Sr., age 89 of Altus, passed away at his home Saturday evening, October 14, 2006. Mr. Burbank was born on June 24, 1917, to Albert Lee and Grace Elizabeth (Dalton) Burbank in Ordway, Colorado. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and later from Sioux Falls College. After serving his country in the United States Navy, Mr. Burbank spent over forty years with Northern States Power as a water chemist for the power plant. He married Phyllis Jane Cheney on November 4, 1939, and they spent sixty-six wonderful years together before his death. Mr. Burbank enjoyed being part of the Cathedral Choir of Sioux Falls, the Western Oklahoma State College Chorus in Altus, being a scoutmaster, camping, hiking, woodworking and being an amateur astronomer. Preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lillian Schlueter and a son, Charles A. Burbank, he is survived by his wife, Phyllis; eight children, James Burbank, Jr. of Altus, David Burbank of Altus, Peter Burbank of Lexington, Kentucky, Denise Burbank of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Daniel Burbank of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Christopher Burbank of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Michelle Burbank of Aurora, Colorado and Annette Burbank of Aurora, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. | BULRISS Lawrence Casper Bulriss, age 70 of Altus, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2006, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Larry was born on April 4, 1936, to Archie and Evelyn (Garrne) Bulriss at Moores, New York. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Larry married Mary Thornton on April 4, 2000, in Vernon, Texas. After his retirement from the military, Larry spent several years as a maintenance / contracting inspector with civil service. He had a variety of interest such as riding his motorcycle, was an avid Nascar fan, enjoyed history, old westerns and collecting eagles. Larry was proud of his career in the military, but he spoke with more pride about his family and friends. However, he would pretend to be offended if he was called a “Yankee”. One of his favorite pastimes was teasing others. Larry will be remembered for his sense of humor, but he will be missed for the way he touched the lives of others. Preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Thelma Ashline and the mother of his daughter, Betty J. Bulriss, Larry is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; one sister, Georginna Castine and husband Donald of New York; two brothers, Clifford Bulriss and wife Joan of New York and Clarence Bulriss and wife Judy of New York; five step children and many grand children, nephews, nieces, other relatives and a host of friends whom he dearly loved. | BAEZA Mateo V. Baeza, age 74 of Altus, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. Mr. Baeza was born on September 21, 1932, in Mexico to Tiofilo and Felicitas (Valeriano) Baeza. In 1952, he married his wife, Patricia, and they spent forty-eight wonderful years together before her death in 2000. Moving to the Altus area in 1969, Mateo farmed and worked in the agriculture business until his death. Known for his hard work, Mateo was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family and friends. | BELL Mildred Marie Bell, age 93 of Friendship, passed away Thursday afternoon, November 2, 2006 at her home. Mrs. Bell was born on June 22, 1913, in Humphrey to Edward Orb and Margaret Levisa (Garrett) Morris. She attended Humphrey School and later married the love of her life, Robert Glen Bell, on June 27, 1931, in Greer County. She met Glen on the Friendship School playground where her sister, Mabel, taught. Mrs. Bell was employed at Friendship and Navajo Schools for a time, and later worked at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, Altus High School and retired as the cafeteria manager at Southeast Junior High on March 1, 1980. During retirement, she enjoyed traveling to see her family, knitting, crocheting and quilting, but her most cherished times were the ones spent with her family whom she dearly loved. Marie was also honored with Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior College for nearly 25 years of Water Aerobics at Western Oklahoma State College. During her entire life, Marie never lived where she could not see her beloved Navajo Mountains. She was also very active in the Friendship Baptist Church where she was the longest attending, active member. Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Glen in 1970, one daughter, Sharon Pool, in 1997, a granddaughter Cynthia Nathe in 1972 and two great granddaughters, Heather Bryce and Bree Giles in 2006, four sisters, Mabel Minor, Faye Bower, Martha Lewis (Jayne) Smith and Lula May Morris and two brothers, James Raymond Morris and William Floyd Morris. Survivors include her seven children, Martha Ann Vanderslice and husband Carson of Marlow, Glenna Nathe of Lawton, Janet Billington and husband Grady of Madera, California, Reba Conrad and husband Dale of McKinney, Texas, Judy Gramling of Denton, Texas, Karen Bryce and husband David of Altus and Sonny Bell and wife Elaine of Burkburnett, Texas; twenty grand children; forty-two great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. | Johnathon Peter Baartman Johnathon Peter Baartman, age 26, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2006 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Johnathon was born and raised in Altus, he attended the Altus Public Schools and graduated from Altus High School in 1999. After high school he attended the S.W. Technology Center in the administrative assistant course and the Wrights School of Business in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Johnathon’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with his son Cam’ron, his family and friends. He was of the Protestant faith. He is survived by his son Cam’ron of Cache, Oklahoma; father Lyle Baartman of Altus, grandparents Pete and Shirley Baartman of Altus. Johnathon is also survived by one sister Jessika Shay and husband John of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Jeremiah Baartman and wife Angel of Altus, Oklahoma; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. | Paul Joseph Beaulieu Paul Joseph Beaulieu, 61, of Altus, passed away Thursday, November 9, 2006, at his home. P.J. was born on June 1, 1945, in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to Gerard Joseph and Bertha (Tangue) Beaulieu. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he went on to become an aircraft hydraulic system mechanic. He served three tours in Vietnam, where he earned several awards to include an Air Force Commendation Medal, an Air Force Achievement Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Good Conduct Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters. He reenlisted numerous times and served a total of 22 years for his country. While in the service, P.J. earned his Associates Degree in Applied Science from the Community College of the Air Force and his Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Maryland. After the Military, P.J. worked as a Civil Service employee for several bowling centers throughout Europe as manager. Some of the places included San Veto, Italy, Incirlik, Turkey, Lajes Field Azores Portugal, Altus AFB, and R A F Bentwaters, where he met his wife Linda (Conway) Beaulieu. They married September 23, 1993, in Incirlik, Turkey. Preceded in death by his parents, P.J. is survived by his wife, Linda, of the home in Altus; six sons, P.J. Beaulieu, Jr., Kenneth Beaulieu, Kevin Beaulieu, Colin Turnbull, Robert Turnbull, and Richard Turnbull. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Noah, Joshua, Andrew, Kenny, Josh, Angelica, Diego, Dartanyan, Malachi, and Jordan. A Rosary will be held 7:00 pm, Wednesday, November 15, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Altus. The Funeral Mass for P.J. | Barber Gail Everett Barber, 68, of Hollis, formerly of Enid, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2006, in Lawton, Oklahoma. Gail was born February 25, 1938, to Orville and Wilma (King) Barber in Satanta, Kansas. He married Sara Ann Courtney July 21, 1957, in Independence, Kansas, and they were blessed with the birth of twin boys, Greg and Tim, September 8, 1958. Gail worked for farm cooperatives for 34 years before retiring. He was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Enid, Oklahoma. He had recently attended the First United Methodist Churches of Hollis and Gould where his wife is pastor. Gail enjoyed making woodworking for others, especially the rocking horses for the grandchildren and other children. Survivors are his wife Sara of the home in Hollis, Oklahoma; two sons, Greg of Enid, and Tim of Perry; six grandchildren, Scott of Perry, Michelle and her husband Curt Garrett of Alliance, Nebraska, Sarah, Courtney, Joshua, and Rebekah of Alliance, Nebraska; five great-grandchildren, Kayla and Scott Barber, Jr. of Perry, Aubrey and Austin Garrett of Alliance, Nebraska, and Mason Lunberry of Alliance, Nebraska; one brother Norville and his wife Lois Barber of Caldwell, Idaho, and one sister Willa and her husband Amos Cott of Garden City, Kansas; two sisters-in law, Ona Barber of Johnson, Kansas, and Betty Barber of Johnson, Kansas. Gail is also survived by a son adopted by heart, Richard Knight and his wife Heidi and their children Arick, Karissa, Andrew, Kailene, and Kaitlyn of Enid, Oklahoma. There were also many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Edward and Kenneth Barber, both of Johnson, Kansas. | Bradford Jim Curtis Bradford, 85, died Thursday, January 4, 2007, at his home in Duke. Jim was born February 2, 1921, to Charlie and Doni (Leverett) Bradford in McQeen, Oklahoma. He graduated from Duke High School in 1940. He married Juanita Hall on January 3, 1942, in Altus, Oklahoma. They had one daughter, Sharley Deronda. He entered the U. S. Army in July 1942 and completed medical training in El Paso, Texas. He completed his dental technician in March 1943. He served in England during World War II as a dental technician. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946. Jim returned to Duke and began farming and ranching. He was elected County Commissioner for Jackson County in 1972 and served until 1982. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing dominoes, camping and trading. He was a lifelong member of the Duke First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Woodmen of the World and American Legion. He continued farming until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Cecil, Clay, L. B. and Wayne; and one sister, Elsie. He is survived by his wife Juanita Bradford of the home; one daughter, Deronda Warren and husband Reid of Duke; three grandchildren, Brad Warren and wife Mary Jo of Altus, Todd Warren and wife Becky, and Lynne Herron and husband Shanon, all of Duke; five great-grandchildren, Braden and Kasen Warren, of Altus, Alexis, Lynzie and Teagan Herron of Duke; one sister, Gladys Foreman and husband Eugene of Altus; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at the Duke First Baptist Church on Sunday, January 7, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. with Brother Ralph Chapman officiating. | BROWN Lester Arno Brown, age 73 of Altus, passed away at his home on Thursday, January 25, 2007. Les was born on January 9, 1934, to Arno and Sarah McClements Brown in New York City, New York. A veteran of the United States Navy, Les and his family moved to Altus in the late 1960’s while working with Civil Service. During most of his time at Altus Air Force Base, Les worked on the electronic systems of the flight simulators. Les was a member of the Amateur Radio Club, Lionel Train Club and the B-17 Historical Society. For enjoyment, Les spent time making displays with his many trains, flying and working on and operating his amateur radios. Preceded in death by his parents, Les is survived by one daughter, Leslie Anne Brown of Kenosha, Wisconsin; two granddaughters, Catherine (Kat) Brown and Rebecca Brown of Kenosha, Wisconsin along with many friends. BARBER Shirley Ann Barber, age 70 of Blair, passed away at her home on Sunday, February 4, 2007. Mrs. Barber was born on September 23, 1936, to E.B. and Juanita (Scruggs) Gardner in Tucson, Arizona. Raised in Southwest Oklahoma, she married Robert Lloyd Barber on May 18, 1956 and he preceded her in death on June 19, 1995. With Robert in the United States Air Force and a member of the United States Border Patrol, they lived in many places and made many moves. They moved back to Southwest Oklahoma in 1987, to enjoy their retirement, but Shirley worked several years as an automation clerk for Airlift Training in Civil Service before her full retirement. Gardening, golf and reading were some of her hobbies, but being the “Nintendo Grandma Queen” and spending time with her family and friends were her favorite pastimes. | BROWN Bennie Arvel Brown, age 68 of Altus, passed away early Monday morning, February 12, 2007, at English Village Manor. Mr. Brown was born on September 13, 1938, at Kermit, Texas to Robert J. and Lorea (Hair) Brown. He graduated from Odessa, Texas High School and worked at various jobs until joining the United States Air Force in 1966. On April 29, 1967, he married Helen Epling at Odessa, Texas and lived in several places during his career. In 1977, they moved to Altus where he worked at Altus Air Force Base until his retirement in May of 1986. After leaving the Air Force, he began work for United Airlines as a C-5 Loadmaster Instructor. Later changing their name from United Airlines to Flight Safety, Bennie retired from that job in 1999. Muzzle loading and shooting, fishing, watching television and attending and participating in Indian pow-wows were some of his pastimes, but being with his family and friends was his favorite. Bennie was a member of the National Rifle Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, a 32nd Scottish Rite Mason, Past Master of Altus Lodge 62 and Past Patron of the Altus Order of Easter Star Lodge 49. Preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Bennie is survived by his wife, Helen; one son, Robert Brown and wife Natasha; one granddaughter, Alexis Brown; two sisters, Dorothy Grizzard of Big Springs, Texas and Cora Bell Shows and husband Dutch of Odessa, Texas; one brother, Robert Brown and wife Lawanda of Odessa, Texas along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. | Gary Reed Barrett Gary Reed Barrett was born in Altus, Oklahoma 12-24-1945, the first of five children born to Charles Reed Barrett and Mary Ferne Caves Barrett. Gary grew up on his parents’ farm, loving the outdoors. At age 12 he was baptized at Martha Baptist church. He loved the Lord and felt called to be a preacher. He graduated from Martha High School in 1964. He began attending college at Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met and married Nancy Carolyn Golden. They had two daughters, Kimberlee Anne and Rachel Suzanne. He completed his degree at Hardin Simmons in law enforcement in 1971. During his life he worked in law enforcement in Abilene, TX; Snyder, TX; Mesquite, TX; Douglas, WY; and Cody, WY and also worked undercover for the DEA for a number of years. He married his beloved wife Michelle Lynn Maupin in 1990. In 1993 he adopted Michelle’ s daughter Kimberley Kay, then age six. After marrying Michelle, he fulfilled a life-long dream of working on and managing large ranches in South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. From 1999 to 2006 he and Michelle and Kimberly K. returned to Oklahoma where they built a home outside Martha near the Salt Fork of the Red River. At the time of his death, he was living in Pueblo, CO. Over his lifetime, Gary worked in trucking, ranching, farming and law enforcement. Although he never had a pulpit, he preached the love and mercy of Jesus Christ wherever he went. His love of the Lord was magnetic and genuine. He understood hardship. He understood redemption. He was a faithful son, loving father, proud grandfather and dear friend, beloved by many. He never met a stranger. His smile and ready laugh could light up a room. He wasn’t afraid to show emotion or affection, or to speak about matters of the heart and eternal things. His family and friends rejoice that he is with the Lord, but he will be sorely missed. | Ethel “Irene” Bowman Ethel “Irene” Bowman, age 78, of Blair, passed away Friday, March 2, 2007, at her home. Irene was born June 14, 1928, in Atoka, Oklahoma, to Sam and Omie Annie (Furr) Aterberry. She married Jessie Bowman March 25, 1950, in Vernon, Texas. They lived in Tipton, Oklahoma, for many years before moving to Blair fifteen years ago. Irene was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved to sew and listen to music. She also loved fishing and especially catching perch. Irene was very fond of her dog “Bubba” and loved her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jessie on February 18, 1999, two sisters, Eloise Dudley and Joyce Williamson, and a daughter-in-law, Martha Bowman, Irene is survived by three sons, Jimmy Dale Pierson and wife Deanna of Hobbs, New Mexico, Merlin Bowman of Denver, Colorado, Curtis Bowman of Wichita Falls, Texas; one daughter, Nita Jo Everett of Blair; nine grandchildren, Chad Pierson, Travis Pierson, Kristy Bowman, Merlin Lance Bowman, Keith Curtis Bowman, Jessica Mae Bowman, Cassie Spring, Jennifer Walker, and Jalynn Walker; fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. | Margaret Ellen Bex Margaret Ellen Bex, 87 of Altus passed away Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Norman Regional Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma. She was born November 19,1919 in Frederick, Oklahoma to Helen (Archer) Meeks and John Logan Meeks. Margaret graduated from Frederick High School in 1937 and later attended TWU in Denton, Texas. On January 21, 1940 in Frederick,Oklahoma Margaret and F.F. “Chug” Bex were united in marriage. He preceded her in death July 21, 1978. Margaret had lived in the Altus community since March of 1964 moving here from Frederick, Oklahoma. She was a longtime member and past president of PEO-Chapter CM; Voguette Bridge Club, Thursday Bridge Club. While living in Frederick she served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church; and was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Altus. She is survived by her daughter Jan of Norman, Oklahoma; two grandsons; Josh of Norman, Oklahoma, Michael of Phoenix, Arizona; one sister-in-law Bess Dowdy, one niece Suzanne Kavanagh; two nephews John Dobbs and Mike Dobbs; and several great-nieces and great-nephew. | BAARTMAN Peter C. Baartman, age 72, of Altus, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Pete was born on May 27, 2007, to Peter Jr. and Sadie (Mollema) Baartman at Middleburg, Iowa. On November 9, 1956, he married the love of his life, Shirley Mae Slykhuis, and they were married fifty wonderful years before his death. In 1969, the Baartmans moved to Altus from New Jersey while Pete was in the United States Air Force. In 1975, Pete retired and went to work for Altus Electric as an electrician. He later purchased the business and continued working until his death. Fishing and bowing were some of Pete’s pastime activities, but his favorite thing to do was spend time with his children and grandchildren. | BUCK Joe Buck, of Altus, civic leader, professional baseball player, and businessman, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2007, at his home following a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Eddie Joe Buck was born in Elmer, Oklahoma, on May 15, 1931, to Joe and Lola Mae Buck. He grew up in Altus, and is remembered by many for cycling his physically handicapped sister, Bettie Anne, on his bicycle handles to Washington Elementary. He lovingly took her to ball games and wherever he went. Buck attended Altus Schools and graduated in 1940 at the age of 17. His mentor, Bill Williams, recommended Joe for a baseball scholarship at Oklahoma A & M, now known as Oklahoma State University. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity in Stillwater, Oklahoma. During his junior year, he signed a baseball contract with the Boston Red Sox. He graduated from Oklahoma A & M with a degree in economics. Joe credits Eula and Clifford Peterson for the encouragement they and the First Baptist Church gave him through his growing up years. After college, Joe served two years in the Korean Conflict, then returned to the Red Sox. He played ball until 1956. In October of 1956, Joe received the opportunity to begin his career in Altus. He entered into business with Johnny Gregg Real Estate and Insurance. It later became Gregg, Buck, & Roberson Agency, now know as Century 21 Altus Prestige Realty. For many years, Buck was actively involved in many civic endeavors in the community. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce twice and as president of the Kiwanis Club twice. He was president of the Altus and Oklahoma Board of Realtors, seved on military affairs, and attended Altus Air Force committees regularly. He served three years as an Altus Schools board member and was a deacon at the First Baptist Church, where he also taught Sunday School for several years to high school boys. Joe spearheaded the drive to build the Industrial Park, and worked diligently to build the Southwest Technical Center. In 1952, leading Oklahoma A & M to a Missouri Valley Conference Southern Division championship, Joe became the first Oklahoman to earn All-American Baseball honors. In 1992, Joe was in the first class to be inducted into the Oklahoma State Baseball Hall of Fame in Stillwater. Joe shared special times with his grandchildren when he took them to breakfast each Wednesday morning prior to school. After semi-retirement, Joe and Marilyn enjoyed motor homing throughout the U.S. His family honored Joe on his 75th birthday with a golf tournament and luncheon at the Altus Elks and Country Club. This was a show of appreciation for Joe’s devotion to his family, as well as time and efforts in building “Altus With A Future To Share”. Joe Buck was preceded in death by his parents Joe & Lola Mae Buck, and his sister, Bettie Anne. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of the home; his brother Bill Buck of New Orleans, La.; his children, Mary and Billy Moore of Lubbock, TX, Gregg and Andrea Buck of Altus, Tina and David Cossey, Teri Philbrick and Toye and George Mitchell, all of Edmond, OK. His great pleasure was in being a grandparent to Whitney Mitchell Nelson and her husband Jeremy, Carson Mitchell, Stacy and Brayden Buck, Megan Myers, Abbey and Bennett Philbrick, and Jacob and Justin Cossey. | Bobbie Lou Beets Bobbie Lou Beets, age 91, of Altus, Oklahoma passed away Sunday, September 9, 2007 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus. She was born June 13,1916 in Hollis Oklahoma to Robert Nathan Morris and Geneva (Duvall) Morris. On November 2, 1940 Bobbie and Hamon Ira Beets were united in marriage. Bobbie taught school at Eugene Field in Altus for many years and was voted teacher of the year before she retired in 1978. After she retired she volunteered at the hospital, was active with the United Methodist Women and the quilting club. Bobbie was a charter member of Good Sams Club. She was longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Altus. She is survived by her loving husband H.I. Beets of sixty-six years; one son Charles Beets and wife Susan of Benton, Arkansas; two sisters, Madeline McGee of Hollis, Oklahoma, Ruby Wooldridge of Mangum,Oklahoma; daughter-in-law Merry Garner of Argyle, Texas. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Elaine Berthelot, one son Jerry Beets; one grandson DuWayne Beets and one brother C.L.Morris. | Barnes Leon Barnes, age 94, of Altus, died Monday, September 10, 2007. He was born in Hillsboro, Texas on December 24, 1912 to William C. and Etta Mae (Loftis) Barnes. In 1914, when he was two years old, the family moved to Jackson County and lived on various farms in and around the Navajoe and Friendship communities. He attended the Clabber Flats and White schools, later Ozark and Friendship schools where he graduated as high school valedictorian in1932. At Friendship he participated in both basketball and baseball. After graduation he attended business college in Oklahoma City. In 1934 he married his high school sweetheart, Beatrice Shackelford. They settled on a farm in the Friendship community. He later also worked as a bookeeper and manager of the Friendship Co-Operative Gin. Leon joined the Midway Methodist Church (Friendship Methodist) in 1933. For over forty years he served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. In 1972 they moved to Altus where he was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church and also active in the Senior Center. His pastimes were playing dominoes and watching the Atlanta Braves baseball games on TV. Leon loved his family, friends and his church. He enjoyed telling stories and jokes, and was known for his great sense of humor. He and Beatrice were married for fifty-nine years. She preceded him in death in 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers; Virgil, L.B. and Elmer. Leon is survived by his daughter Twila Bearden and husband Edgar of Santa Fe,NM. four grandchildren; Lisa Conley and husband David of Wentzville, Mo. Leah Bearden of Tacoma, Wa., Sherri Ansay and husband William of Sun Prairie, Wi, Jaye Hawkins and husband Dean of Las Cruces, NM. six great grandchildren; Sarah and Adam Conley; Monique and Rachel Ansay; and Callie and Hannah Hawkins. He is survived by one sister Bonnie Johnson of Altus, and other relatives and good friends. Funeral services for Leon Barnes are scheduled for Friday, September 14, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Margie Van Oostrum officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. | BLOOMBERG John Donovan Bloomberg, age 88, of Altus, passed away late Friday evening, November 30, 2007, at Plantation Care Center in Altus. Mr. Bloomberg was born on July 29, 1919, in Frankfort, Kansas to John Albert Benjamin and Beulah May (Davis) Bloomberg. A graduate of Walthena, Kansas, John had a successful football career while maintaining a farming job during school. Following graduation, he moved to Dearborn, Missouri where he continued to farm until February of 1942, when he was drafted into the United States Army. During the next two and half years, John served his country in several locations in the Asia-Pacific Theater including two times at Guadalcanal. Earning the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, the APTC Ribbon and the Combat Infantry Badge, he was discharged in October 1944 and returned to Dearborn to farm. After a short time in farming, John began working in the grocery business and continued in that vocation for the next twenty-five years before owning and operating Flavor Maid Donut Shops in three different locations. After retiring in the mid 1990's he moved to Altus where he made his home until his death. John is survived by two children, Elizabeth Jean Karr and husband Larry of Colorado Springs, Colorado and John Dwain Bloomberg and wife Terri L. of Headrick, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; one brother, David Bloomberg and wife Doris of Dearborn, Missouri along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A memorial service for John Donovan Bloomberg will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, December 4, 2007, at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. George Lupton officiating. | Thomas Brown Thomas (Tom) Brown of Olustee passed away at Jackson County Memorial Hospital Monday, March 17, 2008. Tom was born October 16, 1917 to Waters and Eva (Clinton) Brown in Ardmore Oklahoma. Tom married his wife Neg (Muse) Brown on May 6, 1941 in Altus, Oklahoma. They were married for 66 years. Tom owned and operated Tom’s Station in Olustee for 40+ years from 1959 until his retirement in 2002. Tom also served the City of Olustee as Fire Chief for 20+ years. Olustee residents could always hear a tune in downtown Olustee as Tom was always whistling while he worked. He was a local favorite with the kids as he always had a piece of bubble gum for them after school and was out on Fridays. Tom enjoyed bowling and was always ready for a good game of cards or dominos. Tom was always eager for a road trip to Stillwater to spend time with his family and a friendly game of Pitch. The town of Olustee honored Tom when the Mayor and Town Council proclaimed Saturday, November 16, 1996 as Tom Brown Day in Olustee, Oklahoma. Tom is survived by his wife Neg, son Mike and wife Danna, grandchildren Bryan and wife Catherine, Michelle Brown and fiancee Doug Mauk along with four great grandchildren Hayden Brown (5), Holden Brown (5) Skyler Mauk (2) and Parker Brown (2).He is also survived by two sisters Willie Edna Billington and Marjorie Siefert. Tom was preceded in death by his son Thomas Clinton Brown, parents Waters and Eva Brown, brothers E.W. Brown, Aubrey Brown, J.C. Brown, Richard Brown, and sisters Katherine Tallent and Iris Ann Howard. Services for Tom Brown are Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Lowell-Tims Chapel at 2:00 pm with Bill Osborne and Rev. Max Gunn officiating. Intement will follow at Olustee cemetery in Olustee, Oklahoma under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Eva Lois Brewer Eva Lois Brewer,74, of Eldorado, passed away on April 12, 2008 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Eva was born August 14, 1933, in Eldorado to George and Lois Smith. Eva attended Eldorado High School and then pursued her life-long ambition of becoming a nurse. She was a nurse from 1956-1976 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital where she helped countless patients in need. After she retired from the hospital, she worked briefly for Dr. Noble Ballard until her health declined. Eva has been fondly remembered through the years by many of her former patients and co-workers. She was a member of the Eldorado First Baptist Church. Eva is survived by her mother, Lois Smith, Eldorado; daughter, Joy Whitlock and husband Mark, Altus; son Danny Campsey, Bagwell Texas; sisters, Paula Ledbetter and Ann Tinney, Eldorado; and brother Bill Smith and wife Pam of Blue Springs, Missouri. Eva was very proud of her five grandchildren: Tangie Pappo, Altus; Melanie MacKenzie, Lubbock, TX; Brian Whitlock, Plainview, TX; J.B. Campsey, Bagwell, TX; and Christen Campsey, Clarksville, TX. Eva was also blessed with two great grandchildren: Avery Joy MacKenzie and Arianna Campsey; and seven nephews and two nieces. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April15, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Eldorado First Baptist Church, with the Reverend Pete Wylie officiating.
