Callaway


Mariella M. Callaway, age 78, of Mangum passed away Monday, July 17, 2006, at Grace Living Center in
Mangum.  

Mrs. Callaway was born on April 7, 1928, to Clyde Haskell and Sarah Ellen (Haning) McCown in Wewoka,
Oklahoma.  Mrs. Callaway attended the University of Oklahoma and later graduated from George Washington
University in  Washington D.C.  On September 17, 1947, she married Charles Callaway and they made their
home in the Washington D.C. area until 1958.  After moving to Mangum, Mrs. Callaway was employed by the
Mangum Star News and The First National Bank.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the
University Women’s Club, but her favorite times were spent with her family and friends.  

Preceded in death by her parents, Mrs. Callaway is survived by her husband, of the home; two sons, Charles
Callaway, Jr. and his wife Gene of Edmond, and George Clinton Callaway of Mangum; one daughter, Ellen C.
Bonner and husband Dr. Christopher Bonner of Madison, Wisconsin; one brother, J.B. McCown of Edwardsville,
Illinois; four grandchildren, Christopher Callaway, Matthew Harmon, Addison Gist, and Chloe Callaway, along
with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mariella M. Callaway will be Friday, July 21, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Greer Funeral Home
Chapel, Mangum, Oklahoma with Rev. Don Tabberer officiating.  Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery,
under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.

CEARLEY

Murel L. Cearley, age 84 of Mangum, passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2006 at Mangum City Hospital.  

Mrs. Cearley was born on December 24, 1921 at Williow, Oklahoma to Joe Coleman and Marguereitte (Biffle)
Heatley.  A high school English teacher, Mrs. Cearley taught in Dewey, Oklahoma for many years and then
moved to Alaska where she continued teaching until her retirement in 1972.  

A member of the First United Methodist Church of Mangum, Mrs. Cearley was a member of the Oklahoma
Retired Teachers’ Association, Mangum Civic Women’s Club, the Sorosis Club and Book and Play Club in
Lawton.  She was an avid reader , and a supporter of Friends of the Library.  She donated many books to the
Library  

Preceded in death by her husband, Wilber D. Cearley in 1945, a son, Wilber D. Cearley, Jr.; two sisters,
Joneta Hale and husband Fred and Francis  Heatley, she is survived by two sisters, Stella Ware of Bella Vista,
Arkansas and Iva Nell Templer of Altus; several nieces and nephews, Karen Palmer and husband Randy of
Lawton, Cheryl Harris of Lawton, Freddie Jo Barnett and husband Gregg of Edmond, Steve Ware and wife
Melanie of Rogers, Arkansas, Tom Ware and wife Elizabeth of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Cathy Kielty and husband
Jim of Columbus, Ohio, Theresa Ware of Rogers, Arkansas, Paula Borenstein and husband Mark of Highland
Park, Illinois, Alison Templer of Altus, Maggie Sasse and husband Allen of Blair and Paige Owens and
husband David of Crested Butte, Colorado.  

Memorial services for Murel L. Cearley will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at 10 a.m. at the First
United Methodist Church in Mangum with Rev. Don Tabberer officiating.  Services will be under the direction of
Greer Funeral Home of Mangum. A nursery will be provided.

CLEM

Joyce Paxton Clem, age 86 and formerly of Granite, passed away Monday, June 12, 2006 at the Ada Retirement
and Care Center in Ada, Oklahoma.

Joyce was born on November 10, 1919 in Granite to Guyde Beaumont and Emily Pearl (Moore) Paxton.  Joyce
graduated from Granite High School in 1937.  During that time she was on the Honor Roll, Editor in Chief of the
school newspaper, Editor of the Music Department yearbook, Glee club quartette, Basketball All County Center in
1937, Tennis doubles winner of the county 1936-37 and track 1933.  She later graduated from Southwestern
State College with a Business Degree.  Upon graduation, she taught high school in Martha.  Her first paycheck
from teaching went to purchase a 410 shotgun.  A long time member of the Granite Church of Christ, Joyce was
active in ESA, the Rock Cemetery Preservation Committee, volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Drive, was a
member of the American Legion Auxiliary and on the board of directors for the Granite Public Library.  The
Children’s corner at the library was a special interest to her, but her main interest was her grandchildren.  She
was eager to do anything with them.

She married Roy DeWitt Clem on November 8, 1941 in Lawton.  They spent forty-two wonderful years together
before his death in 1983.  During their marriage, they lived in Norman while Roy completed his degree in
Architecture from the University of Oklahoma.  They later moved to Midwest City and then back to Granite in 1972
when Roy retired.  

Preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joyce is survived by two daughters, Roye Jan Myers and
husband Paul of McKinney, Texas and Catharine Jane Choate and husband Larry of Stratford, Oklahoma; four
grandchildren, Brandon Trent Myers and wife Lori of Dallas, Jason Roy Myers and wife Megan of St. Joseph,
Missouri, Leslie Choate of Lawton and Lisa Choate Dunn and husband Jeremy of Smyrna, Georgia; four great-
grandchildren; Rachel, Sarah and Emma Myers of Dallas and Boomer Andrew Dunn of Smyrna, Georgia; one
sister, Mildred Barron Klema of Escondido, California; a special sister-in-law who was very dear to her, Lena Mae
Paxton of Anadarko, Oklahoma along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Joyce Paxton Clem will be Thursday, June 15, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Granite Church of Christ
with Ken Hamilton officiating.   Interment will follow in Granite Rock Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral
Home of Granite.

The family request that any donations be made to the Granite Library in memory of Joyce Paxton Clem.
