| Rosie May Cornelison Rosie May Cornelison age 91 of Headrick, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at English Village Manor in Altus. She was born August 26, 1914 in Inville, Oklahoma to Walter and Lou Cindy (Brown) Johnson. On June 3, 1939 Rosie and Arnold J. Cornelison were united in marriage. He preceded her in death February 19, 1994. Rosie had lived in the Headrick community for many years. She enjoyed being outdoors, working in her yard and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Headrick. She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Sue, one brother A. C. Johnson and wife Betty of Dill City, Oklahoma; one great-grandson Greg Cornelison of Headrick, Oklahoma and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, six brothers and one grandson. | CANTRELL Bonnie Carrigan Whitehead Cantrell, age 93 of Altus, passed away early Saturday morning, January 7, 2007, at Plantation Care Center in Altus. Mrs. Cantrell was born on January 4, 1914, in Frazer, Kentucky to Jack and Lenora (Hollars) Carrigan. She married Henry Cleo Whitehead on July 20, 1935, in Lawton, Oklahoma. Later they moved to Tipton where they were engaged in farming and both of their daughters were born there. Moving to Davidson, Oklahoma to farm, they later moved to Pecos, Texas where Cleo worked in the oil field. During the war, Cleo worked for Civil Service a short time in defense plants in Illinois and Neosho, Missouri. They lived in Frederick for a brief time before moving back to Tipton and then to Hess where they farmed. Later they moved to Friendship to farm and Cleo worked at Altus Air Force Base. While living in the Friendship community they were foster parents to twelve children and were members of the Friendship Methodist Church where Bonnie taught Sunday school. Cleo passed away on November 21, 1968. In 1978, Bonnie moved to Altus and married James O. Cantrell on January 24, 1979. Her marriage to James blessed her with two sons, a daughter and their families. They attended the Friendship Methodist Church and later joined The First Assembly of God Church after the Methodist Church disbanded. Bonnie was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. For approximately six years, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Hess and while living there she was cared for by JCMH Home Care and JCMH Hospice. She attended Hess Baptist Church while living there and moved to Plantation Village in January of 2005. Bonnie loved the Lord, family, friends, nature, bird watching, yard work, keeping her home and decorating for holidays. Above all, Bonnie’s favorite thing in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren who were very special to her. Preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, three sisters, Joan Smith, Josephine Carrigan and Bryan Hayes; four brothers, Samuel, Jack, Fount and Norman Carrigan; a son, Joe Cantrell and son-in-law, Alan Goldie, she is survived by four children, Betty Briscoe and husband Jim of Hess, Barbara Goldie of Redlands, California, Jim Cantrell and wife Edith of Bethany, Oklahoma and Joyce Haley of Oklahoma City; one daughter-in-law, Lela Cantrell of Colorado Springs; eleven grandchildren, Jima Beach and husband Gary, Jimmie Briscoe and wife Leslie, all of Altus, Alana Marietta and husband Bo of Heath, Ohio, Cathi Goldie of Newark, Ohio, Lance Goldie and wife Jacki of Redlands, California, Sharon Kercher and husband Ron of Aurora, Colorado, Valerie Steward and husband Rob of Klawock, Alaska, Randy Cantrell and wife Debbie of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma Rick Cantrell and wife Cindy of Poetry, Texas, Ryan Haley and wife Amy of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Erica Haley of Washington, D.C.; nineteen great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Christina Beach, Shelby and Mackenzie Briscoe, all of Altus, Zac and Alexander Marietta of Heath, Ohio, Joshua Gooden of Cleveland, Ohio, Daniel and Jacob Gooden of Newark, Ohio, Brian Goldie of Redlands, California, Scott and Luke Kercher of Aurora, Colorado, Melissa and Laura Steward of Klawock, Alaska, Rachel and J.J. | Chavez Juan Manuel Chavez, 45, of Tipton, passed away Monday, January 22, 2007, at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus. Juan was born May 21, 1961, in Poteet, Texas, to Ramon and Maria (Herrera) Chavez. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1979. Juan worked for the Slagle Factory in Frederick for thirteen years. He worked for the State of Oklahoma as a guard for the Oklahoma Juvenile Affairs in Manitou, Oklahoma, for the past 2 ½ years. He loved Oklahoma football and his passion was hunting with rifles and bows and arrows. He was a true nature lover and was very close to his family. Preceded in death by his mother, Maria Chavez and a brother, Arcadio Chavez, Juan is survived by his father, Ramon Chavez of Tipton; five brothers, Adolfo Chavez, Pedro Chavez, both of Tipton, Roberto Chavez of Lubbock, Texas, Ramon Chavez, Jr., and Gregorio Chavez, also of Tipton; two sisters, Esperanza Chavez and Margarita Chavez, also of Tipton; many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. | CASTILLO Mary Magdeline Castillo, age 51, formerly of Frederick, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2007, at Mangum Community Hospital. Mary was born on November 28, 1955, in Austin, Texas to Demetrio Ramirez and Reyes (Pena) Aguilar. Moving to the Frederick area in the early 1970’s, Mary worked for many years as a material cutter for OK1 Manufacturing and moved to Mangum in January of 2007. | CASWELL Margie Betty Davis Caswell, age 78, formerly of Altus, died on Tuesday, February 13, 2007, at her home in Oklahoma City. Betty was born in Duke, Oklahoma, on March 13, 1928, to Fred and Alma (Butcher) Davis. She attended Duke High School. She lived in Wichita, Kansas for many years, where she was employed as an expeditor at Cessna Aircraft. In 1969, she moved to Altus, Oklahoma to care for her aging parents. While in Altus, she was a long- time employee of Kellwood Company, where she made lasting friendships. She lived in Oklahoma City for the last ten years. Her favorite recreation was shopping for friends and family and she enjoyed all of the Oklahoma City malls. For the last year, she lived at Town Village in Oklahoma City, where she enjoyed playing bridge and made many new friends. Despite suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for the last twenty-five years, she remained very active with her family and in her community. She retained her great strength, sense of humor, and positive outlook on life, her favorite quote being “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” She treasured her family, and was always there for her children and grandchildren both in good times and bad. She was their greatest supporter, comforter and friend. She was well-loved by everyone who knew her, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Donations in her name may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, or to the Betty Caswell Memorial Scholarship Endowed Fund through Western Oklahoma State College, Altus, Oklahoma. Dale Clement Dale Clement, 70, of Hollis, passed away Friday, June 22, 2007, at Harmon Memorial Hospital in Hollis. Dale was born January 15, 1937, in Bowie, Texas, to C.T. and Oneida (Stout) Clement. He attended Hollis Public Schools and at an early age started working for Oscar Bryant. He was always a hard worker and learned to drive a tractor at the age of 12. Dale worked as the Superintendent of Line Operation for Rural Electric Cooperative for 31 years. His passion as a volunteer firefighter for the Hollis Fire Department was well known by the community of Hollis. He retired after 20 years of faithful service. Dale worked at the Hollis Car Care Center where he helped his daughter and son-in-law run the business for several years. In 2002, Dale started working for Harmon Memorial Hospital as the maintenance supervisor where he was currently employed. He was a member of the American Legion and the First Baptist Church in Hollis. Dale and Deanne (Bell) were united in marriage December 25, 1981, in Hollis. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Deanne Clement of the home in Hollis; nine children, Judy Murphy and husband Richard of Washington, D.C., Joe Dale Clement of Oklahoma City, Alice Manney and husband David of Altus, Hazel Elder and husband Don of Luther, Oklahoma, Tammie Wallace and husband Steve of Aline, Oklahoma, Donna Hudspeth and husband W.J. of Hollis, Major T.J. | CARRELL Mildred (Midge) Letha Carrell, age 89, formerly of Olustee, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2007, at the Universal Hospice and Pallative Care Center in Ft. Worth, Texas. Midge was born on May 5, 1918, in Olustee, to Rufus Oliver and Laura F. (Staley) Weems. She attended Harmony School and quit at an early age, then later completed her high school degree during her fifties at Olustee School. On April 16, 1938, she married Frank Carrell at Olustee. He preceded her in death on February 24, 1984, after forty-five years of marriage. A great seamstress and cook, Midge was known for quilting quilts and crocheting different items to give to her family and friends as gifts. A loving mother and grandmother, she was involved in all activities that included her children and grandchildren. Midge was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters, Ester McRee, Emma Watts, Odie Mundell and Ida Rosser. | Nina Chavez Nina Jean Chavez, 61, of Altus, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at English Village Nursing Home in Altus. Nina was born June 3, 1946, in Jenks, Oklahoma, to Eugene and Eunice (Autrey) Frailey. She attended school in Jenks, Oklahoma, and later traveled extensively with her mother all over the United States. She lived in several towns in Oklahoma and moved to Altus with her two children in the 1960’s. Nina had several jobs in the Altus through the years and was employed by the Altus Cab Company until about four years ago. Her favorite hobbies were traveling, cooking, and seeing the ocean. Preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Renae Frailey in 1990, Nina is survived by one son, Richard Frailey and wife Julie of Altus; one granddaughter, Felicia Frailey of Altus; and one grandson, Montana Ray Frailey, also of Altus. | Orene Caswell Orene Caswell, 89, of Weatherford, formerly of Hollis, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at Weatherford Regional Hospital in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Orene was born August 15, 1918, in Harmon County, Oklahoma, to John and Ola Mae (King) Orr. Orene was the youngest of eight children. She attended school at O.M., Vinson, and graduated from Arnett. She married Dewey Caswell April 23, 1937, at the Greer County courthouse in Mangum. Orene and Dewey were members of Antioch Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church of Hollis. Orene had one daughter, Pamela Kay, and was a devoted wife and mother. She worked at many of the fabric and clothing stores in Hollis over the years. She loved working with the public and formed many friendships. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing for family and friends, especially her great- granddaughters. Orene truly loved serving the Lord and taught Sunday school classes for over fifty years at First Baptist Church where she loved watching the children grow. In later years, she enjoyed fellowship with the ladies’ classes of the church. After Dewey’s passing, Orene moved to Weatherford to be near her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She often attended First Baptist Church in Weatherford and services at Weatherford Living Center, where she lived. Orene continued to keep in touch with Hollis friends. Orene’s love and kindness will always be remembered. Orene is survived by two grandsons, Mike Walkup and wife Lauren, of Weatherford, and John Walkup of Oklahoma City; three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Michelle, and Morgan Walkup, all of Weatherford; and many nieces and nephews. Orene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dewey in 2003; their daughter, Pam; three sisters, LaVelle, Ola Mae, and Odessa; and four brothers, Joel, Vancil, Varner, and Johnny. | Ruby P. Chaffin Ruby Pearl (Reives) Chaffin, age, 80, of Altus, passed away Monday, February 25, 2008, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus. Ruby was born July 10, 1927, in Detroit, Texas, to Jim and Gladys (Davis) Reives. She married Tom Wilson in 1945. She later married Frank Lovett in 1954 and he preceded her in death. Ruby married Edward Chaffin November 19, 1994, in Sayre, Oklahoma, and they made their home in Altus. Ruby is survived by her husband, Edward Chaffin of Altus; six children, Jim Lovett and wife Brandy, and Tom (T.J.) Luton and wife Mary, all of Seligman, Missouri, Betty Harter and husband Ray of Norwich, New York, Bobby Kazzar of Germany, Charles Beavers of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Charlotte Chappel and husband Phillip of Texas; grandchildren including Michelle, Micheal, Shane, Frank and wife Amy, Stacie, and Nickalaus; great-grandchildren including Dylan, Christian, Caitlyn, Brock, Zachary, Chelsey, and Hailey. One brother, James Mills, and a nephew, Jamie Mills, both of Altus, also survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents, two children, Jerry McDowell and Roberta (Lovett) Maddox, her husbands, Thomas Wilson and Frank Lovett, and other loved ones. Ruby was a wonderful, loving lady who had many talents. She loved to be in the company of those who were special to her. She will be greatly missed and remembered by all who knew her well. | David Michael Cowley David Michael Cowley died unexpectedly at his home in Altus, Oklahoma on Saturday, March 1, 2008. He was 46 years old. David the elder son of Thomas G. Cowley and Rosemarie (Koenig) Cowley, was born in Rochester, New York at St. Marys Hospital on July 1, 1961. He attended schools in Ames, Iowa until the family’s move to Ponca City in 1967. He attended Ponca City Senior High and graduated in May of 1979. His interest throughout his growing up years included hunting, fishing, taxidermy, wild life preservation, creative writing and wildlife photography. He carried these passions with him throughout his life. He began his lifelong involvement with Ducks Unlimited at this time. Upon graduation from high school, David worked at an assortment of jobs and traveled extensively. He then settled in his home town of Ponca City and was exployed as a technician in the research of development division of Conoco, Inc. He later moved to Lubbock, Texas where he worked as a successful taxidermist whose work was in demand by bird hunters from around the country. He received many awards for his work locally,regionally, and nationally. In 1990 David began writing for the American Taxidermist magazine and continued this until his death. In 2003 he moved to Altus and married Gloria Montelongo on September 22,2003. David continued his work in taxidermy through a company in Oklahoma City while remaining in Altus, and then opened his own shop in his home. David was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Emil and Gladys Koenig, and paternal grandparents, William and Doris Cowley. He is survived by his wife Gloria, his mother, Rosemarie Fraites, his parents, Tom and Linda Cowley; grandparents, Ora and Helen Hiskett; his brothers Dan Cowley and Matthew Cowley; his sons Benjamin Page of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and Joseph Motley of Oklahoma City; and his god-parents Karen Johnson and Michael Cowley; and numerous aunts,uncles, and cousins. | John Gregory Cline John Gregory Cline, age 22, formerly of Headrick, Oklahoma died from injuries resulting from an automobile accident near Abilene, Texas, Monday, April 1, 2008. He was born January 9, 1986 in Amarillo, Texas to Raylynn (Dillman) Cline and John Norman Cline.. Greg attended the Altus Public School System and graduated from Altus High School in 2004. He served in the United States Military from September 2005 until April 2007. He was a C130 chief mechanic. After moving from Headrick he made his home in Abilene, Texas. Greg had worked for FB’s Welding in Altus, Can-Doo Budge Rentals and Longbow Bullet Factory. He enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors; especially hunting, fishing, riding ATV’s and hanging out with his friends. Greg is survived by his father Johnny Cline of Headrick, Oklahoma; three sisters; Shay Meece of Yukon,Oklahoma, Lacey Shelton of Amarillo, Texas, and Jessica Cline of Abiline Texas; one brother Levi Cline of Headrick, Oklahoma. | Lou Ann (McGirt) Cervantes Lou Ann Cervantes, age 49, of Altus, Oklahoma passed away Monday, April 21, 2008 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital surrounded by friends and family after a long illness of cancer and diabetes. She was born November 11, 1958 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Jimmie and Flora (Johnson) McGirt. She graduated from Wewoka High School. On April 24, 1984 in Altus, Oklahoma Lou Ann married Raul Cervantes. She worked at various jobs throughout her life, most recently at Wal-Mart in Altus as a cashier. Lou Ann is survived by her father Jimmie McGirt, of Wewoka, Oklahoma husband; Raul Cervantes of Altus, three sons; Gavin McGirt, Damien McGirt, and Antonio Cervantes, all of Altus Oklahoma; six brothers: Bobby McGirt of Holdenville Oklahoma, Roland McGirt of Glenrose, Texas, Paul McGirt of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Randy McGirt of Ada, Oklahoma, Anthony McGirt of Wewoka, Oklahoma, and Reginald McGirt, of Louisiana; three sisters: Wynette Wildcat, Seminole, Oklahoma, Shirley Tiger, of Oklahoma City Oklahoma, and Sally Davis of Ft. Smith Arkansas. She is also survived by other relatives and a host of many friends. She is preceded in death by her mother Flora McGirt in April, 1985; mother-in-law Marcelina Cervantes of Cervantes, Mexico, father-in-law Benjamin Cervantes of Cervantes, Mexico, and niece Melinda Mae McGirt. Bonita (Murphy) Combs Bonita (Murphy) Combs, age 65, a long-time resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, May 12, 2008 in Altus, Oklahoma. Bonita was born in Altus, Oklahoma on August 21, 1942 to John Benson “J.B.” and Nannie Pearl (Shook) Murphy. She graduated from Altus High School in 1960 and in 1961 she married Jackie Ray Combs at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Altus and they were married for over forty six years before her death. Bonita loved taking care of her family and helping her mother and her sister. She was actively involved with her church in Lathrop, Missouri and was very committed with her children’s school years and served as a PTA president. She also enjoyed cross stitching, sewing, working puzzles, shopping, and especially shopping for her children. Bonita was a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister, and friend and she will be missed very much. Preceded in death by her father, J.B. | LaVerne Corey LaVerne Corey, 84, an Altus resident for 56 years, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2008, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City. LaVerne was born December 12, 1923, in Mountain View, Oklahoma, to Arthur Henry Peter and Emma Elizabeth (Vandegrift) Slohn. LaVerne married Clarence H. Corey May 22, 1943, in Oklahoma City. They owned and operated Altus Glass Company from 1952 until his death in 1987, and LaVerne continued to operate the business until she retired in 1994. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, knitting, reading, swimming, and pulling for the Texas Rangers baseball team. She also enjoyed watching her son Arthur and his family riding and competing in The Grand National Horsemen Association. LaVerne was a devoted daughter, wife, and mother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur H. and Emma Slohn; her husband, Clarence Corey; her son, Wayne Corey in 1984; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Slohn and Jacqueline Young, and her brother-in-law, B.C. Young. She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Corey of Altus; two sons, Arthur Corey and wife Debby of Duke, and Flint Corey and wife Linda of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; one brother, Truman Slohn of Oklahoma City; three grandchildren, Stephanie Arnold, Jennifer Birmingham, and Wende Arnold; seven great-grandchildren, Tobey, Nicholas, and Shelby, Hunter, Haleigh, and Chris, and Gavyn; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. | Billie Chicklero Billie Chicklero, 81, of Altus, passed away June 14, 2008, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus. Billie was born March 29, 1927, in Oklahoma City, to T.W. and Beulah (Hutchenson) Mason. She attended school at Porter High in Jackson County until the 9th grade. She married Silvio Chicklero September 17, 1942, in Reno Nevada. Billie lived in California for many years before returning home to Altus. She was a waitress at Friendship Inn in Altus for several years and was well known and loved by all her knew her. Billie loved to read and watch T.V. She also loved to dance and take good care of her loving family. Billie is survived by her husband, Silvio Chicklero, of the home in Altus; one daughter, Tommie Lee Green of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one son, Billy Joe Chicklero of Altus; one sister, Maxine Mason of Altus; a niece, Judith Ann Kastner, also of Altus; and her grandchildren, Dawn Lynn Ramos, Richie Avila, Ray Avila, and Mark Chicklero. | CORRIGAN Patrick “Pat” Leroy Corrigan, age 68, died at his residence northeast of Altus early Saturday morning. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Robert Duckworth will conduct the services. Burial will follow at the Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Pat was born November 22, 1939 in Texas City, Texas to Elmer Leroy Corrigan and Harriett Madalyn Wilson. He married Shirley Ann Roach April 11, 1986. He worked as an Insulator for The International Association of Heat and Frost Insulator and Asbestos Workers Local 22 until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as a young man served as a Missionary in the northwest Idaho Mission. After his return he continued to serve in many capacities with the church. Pat was an avid horseman throughout his life. He is survived by his wife; Shirley Corrigan of the home. Children; Traci Campbell of Vidor, Texas, Pate Corrigan of Boston, Massachusetts, Terri Corrigan of Georgia, Steven Roach of Altus. Katherine (Kaye) Cornelison Catherine (Kaye) Eloise Cornelison of Granite Bay, California, passed away in Altus, Oklahoma, on August 6, 2008, at the age of 88 years. Kaye, the daughter of Clarence B. and Vera Wyman Munson, was born July 9, 1920, in Oakland, California, On July 26, 1942, she married Dan G. Cornelison and they lived in Sacramento, Loomis, and Granite Bay, California, enjoying 59 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and friends. Kaye's philosophy was characterized by a quote from the American journalist Lilian Whiting (1847-1942) “To be rich in friends is to be poor in nothing”. She loved entertaining family and friends, and lived life to its fullest with a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eyes. In addition to managing her household, she pursued a career in medical insurance claims adjustment in Sacramento and retired from the insurance business in 1984 with 42 years of service. After her retirement, she was active in the Loomis, California community. She was a longtime member of the Loomis Friends of the Library and supported the annual library book sales and events. When her health began failing in 2007, she moved to Oklahoma to be close to her family. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001 in Auburn, California, and her only sister, Sally Ray Miller, in 1985 in Altus. She is survived by her brother-in-law Gail S. Miller of Altus, her niece Katherine E. Hale of Blair, her niece Jeanine G. Berrong and husband Brad of Weatherford, and her great nephews Jeffrey and Michael Berrong of Weatherford. Campfield Betty Joyce Campfield, 73, of Altus, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2008, at her home. Betty was born January 20, 1935, in Altus, Oklahoma, to E.A. “Buster” and Bertha (Black) Austin. She graduated from Altus High School in 1953. She worked at the NCO Club on the Altus Air Force Base for several years. Betty married Charles “Chuck” Cooley July 27, 1983, in Vernon, Texas. She loved the outdoors, especially working in her yard. She also loved her animals and enjoyed fishing and camping with her husband. She is survived by her husband Chuck of the home in Altus; two sons; five grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; two nieces; a sister-in-law, and many, many friends. | COURSEY Long-time Altus resident Peggy Collene Coursey, age 78, passed away October 21, 2008 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Peggy was born August 31, 1930 in Frederick, Oklahoma to Roy and Mary (Lewis) Coursey. She moved to Altus in 1940 where she attended Washington Elementary, Central Jr. High and graduated from Altus High School in 1949. She attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha for 1 year then completed her nurses training at Mercy in Oklahoma City, graduating in September 1953 as a Registered Nurse. She started work with the Altus Public Schools as their first school nurse in October 1953. That is where she met her husband Eddie Coursey and they were married on May 22, 1954. She retired from the Altus Public Schools with 25 years service in 1988. After her retirement she continued to serve others by volunteering with the Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice from 1995 until the time she became ill in 2008. She was the Hospice Volunteer of the Year twice, most recently in 2008. Peggy was a long-time active member of the Grace United Methodist Church where she was on numerous church committees, UMW member, a Sunday school teacher, VBS volunteer and choir member. She also taught swimming lessons for the Red Cross for several years and was a Girl Scout leader. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Eddie and four children, Angela Derrick and husband J. D. of Moore, Oklahoma; Mike Coursey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Carol Hughes and husband Kevin of Tuttle, Oklahoma and Debora Phillips and husband Tommy of Altus. | Cox Johnny Paul Cox, 62, of Altus, passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton. Johnny was born April 10, 1946, in Olustee, Oklahoma, to James S. and Dortha Frances (Adams) Cox. He attended Altus High School and worked for several years as a truck driver. He married Linda Tigert August 29, 1980, in Vernon, Texas. In the 1990’s, Johnny worked for Kizziar Feed Lots until his health began to fail. Johnny was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and his family and friends meant so much to him. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. | COOK Garrett S. Cook, Sr., age 86, of Mangum, passed away at the Oklahoma Veterans’ Center in Clinton early Friday morning, February 27, 2009. Mr. Cook was born in Temple, Oklahoma on February 9, 1923, to Marris M. and Ethel I. (Groomer) Cook. In January 1943, he joined the United States Army Air Corps and served until November of 1945, when he moved to California. On July 12, 1946, he married Mildred Lenora Moore in Bakersfield, California and spent the next several years farming and working for Firestone Retread. In 1970, they moved to Duke for a short time before settling in Mangum. For the next eighteen years, Mr. Cook drove a truck for Republic Gypsum, retiring in 1988, living in Mangum until the time of his death. Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Manuel Cook and James Cook; two sisters, Ruby Robertson and Vera Padgett and two grandchildren, Tina Wick and Robert Kendrick, he is survived by his wife, Lenora of the home in Mangum; four children, Garrett S. Cook, Jr. and his wife Lynette of New Port News, Virginia, Mildred D. Higginbotham and husband Robert of Montgomery, Texas, Timothy A. Cook and wife Jarita of Mangum and Mark A. | CROSS Roy George Cross, 90, long time resident of the Friendship Community, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2009 in Duncan, Oklahoma. Roy was born October 11, 1918 in the Friendship Community to Theo and Janie (Bell) Cross. He was a member of the original Midway Methodist Church in Friendship and after it closed, moved his membership to the First United Methodist Church in Altus. On February 5, 1940, he married the love of his life, Mary Wright in Sayre, Oklahoma. They made their home in Friendship where he farmed cotton and wheat for many years. Roy was a kind and caring man who never had a harsh word for anyone. He lived by the motto of “A man is only as good as his word”. Roy was a very devoted family man who adored nothing more than his wife, daughter and granddaughter. Mr. Cross was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1995; his parents; a twin brother, Ray Cross, a brother, Jimmy Cross, and by one sister, Sue Jane McPhail. He is loving survived by his daughter, Katie Cross Tipton and husband, Robert of Duncan, Oklahoma; his granddaughter, Georganna Tipton Lujin and husband Trent of Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Doris Collins of Roswell, New Mexico, LaDell Woodworth of Winston Salem, North Carolina, and Theola Leenhouts of Oklahoma City; 9 nieces and nephews; and many many friends. | CRUZ Mary Alice Cruz, long time resident of Altus, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2009 in Altus, Oklahoma. Mary was born September 8, 1925 in Frederick, Oklahoma. She married Juan S. Cruz on September 8, 1964 in Vernon, Texas and he preceded her in death on January 23, 1980. Mary had made her home in Altus for over 50 years. She retired as a Hostess from the NCO Club at the Altus Air Force Base. Mary devoted her life to helping others. She faithfully served as a Missionary with the Church of God in Christ II in Altus where she was a member for many years. She was a devoted daughter and friend to her mother, Catherine Brown, until her death December 20, 1997. Mary was preceded in death by her father, R.B. Searcey; mother, Catherine Brown; husband, Juan Cruz; aunts, Willie Dee Hamilton, Corrine McShane and Curley Mae Reed; cousin, Al Dunn Reed; and nephew, Tommy Gibson. | CARTER William H. “Bill” Carter, Jr., 53, passed away suddenly at his home in Altus on Saturday, January 31, 2009. Bill was born June 10, 1955, in Columbus, Georgia, to William Henry and Ada Geneva (Brown) Carter. He and his family moved to Altus in 1968, and he graduated from Altus High School in 1973. Bill worked for a time in his family’s business, Carter Carpet, in Altus. In 1989, Bill graduated from the Correctional Officer Academy and went to work at the Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite where he was a Lieutenant and a C.E.R.T. Team member. He received the Correctional Officer of the Year Award in 1998. He retired from OSR due to health problems in 2001. Bill married Paula Ray February 12, 1993, in Vernon, Texas. He enjoyed going to gun shows and auctions. His other hobbies included auto repair, gardening, and his Koi pond. He was also an avid “bargain hunter”, but most of all, he loved helping family and friends with various projects. Preceded in death by his father, William H. | COLLIER Donald Joe (D.J.) Collier, age 81, of Blair, passed away Saturday morning, April 4, 2009, at his home. Mr. Collier was born on August 1, 1927, in Mangum, to Ervin Joe and Mae Belle (Mannahan) Collier. After attending Mangum High School, D.J. joined the United States Navy in 1944 at the young age of seventeen. Following his discharge in 1946, he worked a short time for Mangum City Power. During this time he learned refrigeration and electrical work. On September 1, 1951, he married the love of his life, Joyce M. Barton, in Mangum, and they spent the next fifty-seven wonderful years together. In 1947, he began a career with Southwestern Bell where he served as a loyal employee for the next thirty-eight years, retiring in 1985. Beginning in 1983, D.J. and Joyce ran a successful greyhound business for ten years. | CROWLEY J.C. Crowley, age 76, of Altus, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Plantation Village Nursing Home. J.C. was born August 28, 1932, in Altus to Elder Judge and Mrs. Olla Crowley. A life-long resident, J.C. attended Lincoln School and the Church of God in Christ. In 1962, he met Fannie and was united in marriage on December 13, 1991. J.C. worked for the Altus Cotton Compress for many years. He then worked for the Altus Public Schools for a short time before taking a job with Republic Gypsum. He remained with Republic Gypsum until his retirement. J.C. loved to go fishing and enjoyed working outside in his yard. His favorite thing, though, was spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; eleven brothers and sisters; and by four sons. | COLEMAN Carol Lynn Coleman, age 67, of Wichita Falls, Texas peacefully passed away Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo, Texas with both daughters by her side. Ms. Coleman was born in Mangum on July 27, 1941, to Felma Franklin and Syble Lee (Prigmore) Heatly. After attending Eastview and Brinkman Schools, she graduated from Mangum High School in 1959. A graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State College, at Weatherford, she married J. Carl Coleman and preceded to have two daughters, Carmen and Christy. Carol Coleman was a loving wife and mother to her children. Family was of great importance to her and the heritage of her family always walked beside her. Her parents and brother, Jimmy Heatly, were the love of her life. After her daughters left home, Carol began a career as a decorator in Wichita Falls, Texas. Up to her passing, Carol enjoyed painting, cooking for others and leaving a room more visually inspiring. She will be greatly missed. Preceded in death by her parents, she is survived by two daughters, Carmen Allen and husband Rusty of Menard, Texas and Christy Coleman and Rider of Venice Beach, California; three grandchildren, Laramie, Dakota and Chisum all of Menard; one brother, Jimmy Heatly and wife Joyce of Willow; one niece, Jill DeRusha and husband Randy of Willow; one nephew, Jack Heatly and wife Darla of Mangum along with many other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Carol Coleman will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at the Mangum Church of Christ with Todd McRay officiating. Interment will follow at the Jester Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum. | Crowley J.C. Crowley, age 76, of Altus, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Plantation Village Nursing Home. J.C. was born August 28, 1932, in Altus to Elder Judge and Mrs. Olla Crowley. A life-long resident, J.C. attended Lincoln School and the Church of God in Christ. In 1962, he met Fannie and was united in marriage on December 13, 1991. J.C. worked for the Altus Cotton Compress for many years. He then worked for the Altus Public Schools for a short time before taking a job with Republic Gypsum. He remained with Republic Gypsum until his retirement. J.C. loved to go fishing and enjoyed working outside in his yard. His favorite thing, though, was spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; eleven brothers and sisters; and by four sons. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Fannie of the home; sons, Marvin Crowley of Lubbock, Texas, James Beavers of Garland, Texas, Shaquille Crowley of Altus; Rodney Crowley and Troy Crowley, both of Texas; daughters, Julia Branch of Lubbock, Texas, Glenda Branch also of Lubbock, Sharon Beavers of Oklahoma City, and Alice Porter of Altus. | Cunningham Walter Hershel Cunningham, 75, of Altus, formerly of Hollis, Oklahoma, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at English Village Nursing Home. Hershel was born October 14, 1933, in Cache, Oklahoma, to W.A. “Pete” Cunningham and Lois Pearl (Risinger) Cunningham. He grew up in Hollis and attended Hollis Public Schools. He was a truck driver for many years and enjoyed being on the road. He had lived in Altus for the past twelve years. Hershel loved attending rodeos and roped cattle when he was a young man. Hershel was a professional card player, enjoyed shuffleboard, and loved horses. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family. He also loved his dogs, “Leroy” and “Sissy.” Hershel is survived by his four children, Lucky Sue Green and husband Kenny of Merkel, Texas, Tammy Strickland and husband Joel of Mustang, Oklahoma, Larry “Shotgun” Cunningham and wife Julie of Cache, Oklahoma, and Brad Cunningham and wife Kandi of Altus; his loving companion, Judy Dorsey of Altus; ten grandchildren, Kenny Green, Jr., Shelly Buckley, T.J. Strickland, Scott Strickland, Jenna Dodson, Reece Cunningham, Aaron Cunningham, Braden Cunningham, Connor Cunningham, and Kanyon Cunningham; ten great- grandchildren, Daniel Buckley, Tyler Buckley, Ricky Buckley, Andy Buckley, Hunter Green, Kelsea Green, Natalee Strickland, Dawtry Strickland, Haley Dodson, and Hunter Dodson. His parents, Pete and Lois Cunningham, preceded him in death. Memorial graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2009, at McKnight Cemetery with Reverend James Scarborough officiating. | CANSLER Rosie Marie Cansler, age 65, of Altus, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2009, at her home, in Altus. Mrs. Cansler was born on April 8, 1944, in Longview, Texas to Leonard and Sallie (White) Hughes. As a young girl, she moved from Texas to Wichita, Kansas where she attended school. On January 17, 1964, she married William D. Cansler, Sr., in Wichita, Kansas and he preceded her in death on July 31, 2000. Living in several locations with his military career, they moved to Altus in 1979, where they lived until their deaths. Mrs. Cansler enjoyed attending her church, watching “soaps” and spending time with family and friends. Preceded in death by her parents and husband, she is survived by her mother, Sallie White Carter of Wichita, Kansas; three children, William (BJ) Cansler, Jr., Stacy Cansler Miller and spouse, Randall Miller and Shannon Cansler Garcia and spouse, Richard Garcia, all of Altus, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Garrett Cansler, Ashlyn Garcia and Richard Garcia, Jr., all of Altus; one brother, Harvey Hughes of Dallas, Texas along with many other relatives and a host of friends.
