| Dorothy Evelyn Garvin Dorothy E. Garvin was born July 9, 1916 in Paintsville, Kentucky. She was the oldest daughter of the late George H. and Eunice (Combs) Preston and grew up on the family farm near Elk City during the Dustbowl. She died March 1, 2006, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. She met and married Buel Garvin in 1940 at Clinton, Oklahoma, while they were both students at Southwestern State Teachers’ College in Weatherford. They met in the cafeteria kitchen where they washed dishes to pay for college expenses. Dorothy has been a resident of Altus and Jackson County since 1950 and taught English in Altus schools until her retirement in 1975. She began her teaching career at Wilson Elementary and moved to Northeast Junior High when it was completed. The last portion of her professional career was spent teaching American literature, which she loved, to students at Altus High School. A life-long learner herself, Dorothy took art and piano classes as an adult and completed her Master’s degree after she turned fifty. Dorothy belonged to a number of historical and professional organizations including the DAR, BPW, Oklahoma Retired Teachers’ Association, and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She and Buel were long-time supporters, not only of Altus High School athletics, but also of both the OU and OSU football programs. She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family, including her five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, George, and four sisters, Kitty, Ann, Betsy, and Billie Kay. She is survived by four children; Sue Haley of Scottsdale, Arizona, James Garvin of Altus, Oklahoma, Harold Garvin of Montgomery, Texas, Jo Anne Nusbaum and husband Tom of Moline, Illinois; two sisters, Patty Brewster and husband Verland of Edmond, Oklahoma, Mary Whitehead and husband Floyd of Tuttle, Oklahoma. A Celebration of Life service for Dorothy Garvin will be held Monday, March 6, 2006 at 12:00 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Player officiating. | GARZA Michael Dewayne Garza, age 26 of Stamford, Texas passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2006 in Jones County Texas as the result of a motor vehicle accident. Michael was born on August 8, 1979 in Chillicothe, Texas to Danny Salazar Garza and Deedra (Carroll) Freeman. On March 12, 1998 he married Tasha Lewis. Moving to Stamford in 2003, Michael was employed in the construction field with energy windmills. He enjoyed playing video games and the simple life, but his most favorite thing of all was spending time with his children and other family members. | Luther Kenneth Guffy Luther Kenneth Guffy, age 87, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2007 at his home in Northgate Estates in the Baptist Memorial Center, San Angelo, Tx. He was born March 27, 1920 in Byron, OK. to James Luther and Jessie Ruth (Sluder) Guffy. He granduated from Byron High School. On December 22, 1941, Luther and Marie C. Clainborne were united in marriage in Humphrey, OK. Luther served in the United States Amry Air Force from May 1942 to November 1945, at Tundal Field, Florida as an aerial gunnery instructor. Upon his discharge from service, he continued his education and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Oklahoma Baptist University. He received a Masters Degree in School Administration from the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Guffy taught school five years in Kansas and one year in Texas. He served 28 years as a school administrator with the Ector County Independent School District in Odess, Texas. He was a life member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, as well as a member of the local San Angelo Retired Teachers Association and the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Angelo and faithfully served as a Baptist Deacon for fify years. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Luther and Jessie Guffy; a brother, Martin Monroe Guffy; and by three sisters, Mary Harriet Guffy, Lt. Col. Nellie E. Guffy, and Eloise Denninghoff. Luther is lovingly survived by his wife, Marie C. Guffy of San Angelo, Tx; one daughter, Marjorie E. Bolt and husband Richard R. of San Angelo, Tx; one brother, Wayne Guffy and wife, Lois of Byron, Ok.; 5 sisters, Zay Jimeson of Udall, KS, Ruth Lewis and husband Harold of McCune, KS, Jennie Fischer and husband S.C. of Jet, Ok., Bernice Joseph and husband Earl Joseph of Sylmar, Ca., and Grace Wessel and husband Darrell of Cherokee, Ok; one brother-in-law, Dr. James Denninghoff of Columbis, Mo; and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2:00 Saturday, April 7, 2007, at the Lowell-Tims Chapel with Rev. M.V. Summers and Rev. Don Seigler officiating. | GATES Stephen Andrew Gates, age 36, of Olustee, passed away at his home on Monday evening, June 25, 2007. Stephen was born on July 17, 1970, in Guam, to Kenneth and Linda (Mann) Gates. Graduating from high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he joined the United States Army. Discharging in 1990, Stephen began work in Dallas, Texas, working for Cummins Southern Plains Diesel Parts and later transferred to the Oklahoma City location. In April 2007, Stephen moved to Jackson County to be closer to his family. Stephen is survived by his parents, Don and Nancy Tally, Sr., of Edmond, Oklahoma; three brothers, Don Tally of Olustee, Eddie Tally of Olustee and Harve Newby of Edmond; one sister, Angela Dawn McBride and husband Rob of Victor, New York, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. | Grimes Ruby Olivia Grimes, age 88, died peacefully August 9, 2007 in Yukon Oklahoma. She was born March 3, 1919 in Olustee, Oklahoma to Herbert and Lola Hughes. Ruby was raised in the Olustee and Martha communities. Ruby married Coy Grimes on June 30, 1940. Coy was a cotton farmer and they spent many years on a farm west of Altus. Preceded in death by her husband, Coy on January 23, 1998; her parents; sister Opal Evans; and brother Henry Hughes; she is survived by her brother Denzil Hughes and wife Jackie of Arp, Texas; sons Terry Grimes of Faison North Carolina; Phil Grimes and wife Leta of Mustang, Oklahoma; two granddaughters; Kristy Yeargain and son McKenzie of Mustang, Oklahoma; Stefanie Woodard and husband Ryan, daughter Kaelyn and twins Cole and Callie of Yukon, Oklahoma. | GILPATRICK Keith Gilpatrick, age 68, of Altus, passed away Friday, February 8, 2008, at Plantation Village Care Center. Keith was born on October 9, 1939, to Howard and Madelyn (Talkington) Gilpatrick in Altus. On June 20, 1970, he married Peggy Hamilton in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. He was known throughout southwest Oklahoma as a forty-three year employee of Johnny Roberts Motors. A member of Southside Baptist Church, Keith enjoyed fishing, but spending time with his family and friends brought the most joy to his life. | Guadalupe Felan Guadalupe Felan, age 88 former Altus resident passed away Thursday, April 10, 2008 in Yukon, Oklahoma. He was born May 19, 1919 in Kingsburg, Texas to Narcisso Felan and Tomasa (Garcia) Felan. Guadalupe and Petra Felan were united in marriage in Sarita, Texas. She preceded him in death November 2, 1992. Guadalupe moved to Jackson County in 1961. He had lived in Yukon, Oklahoma for the last seven months. When he and his family moved to Jackson County he worked in the farming industry. He worked for Lewis Jackson in Martha, Oklahoma. He later owned and operated a auto mechanic shop for many years before he retired. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by seven children; Bob Felan and wife Sara of Altus, Oklahoma, Elena Garza and husband David of Houston,Texas, Joe Felan and wife Alicia of Corpus Christi, Texas, Nancy Felan of North Carolina, Alberto Felan and wife Stephanie of Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, Maria Wright of Yukon, Oklahoma and Richard Felan and wife Barbara of Yukon, Oklahoma. He is also survived by one sister Manuela Arriola of Victoria, Texas; thirty-three grandchildren and fifty-eight great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Marcus Goodlow Marcus Goodlow, age 51, a long-time resident of Altus, passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2008 in Hominy, Oklahoma. Marcus was born on February 23, 1957 in Altus to Gilbert and Jessie Mas (Weaver) Goodlow. He married Debra Jones in Altus in 1980. Marcus was a member of the Altus Church of Christ and worked as a machine operator for Altus Co-op Compress. He enjoyed playing football, basketball, track and racing cars. Marcus loved his family and he will be missed very much. Preceding Marcus in death were his parents Gilbert and Jessie Mas Goodlow; one brother, Arthur F. Goodlow; and one sister, Sophia Goodlow. Wayne Graves Wayne Graves, age 87, a lifelong resident of Jackson County, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2008 in Altus. Wayne was born in Ringling, Oklahoma on July 14, 1921 to Jeff and Bessie (Smith) Graves. He served his country during WWII in Okinawa and received an honorable discharge in 1946. Wayne married Clara Mae Murphy on December 27, 1941 in Altus and she precedes him in death. On February 18, 1995 he married Don Nell Adams and they were married for thirteen years before his death. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hess and was a Mason at the Elmer Lodge. Wayne farmed cotton in Hess most of his life and he enjoyed fishing, watching baseball, and watching and talking about WWII. He enjoyed telling old stories and being with family and he will be missed very much. Preceded in death by his wife Clara Mae; his parents; two children that died in infancy, David and Mary; one daughter, Marsha Garrison; three brothers, Paul Graves; Roy Graves; J.R. | Don Nell Graves Don Nell (Adams) Ware-Graves, age 82, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at her home in Altus. Don Nell was born February 23, 1926 in Manitou, Oklahoma to John Thomas and Laura Pearl (Parks) Adams. She spent most of her life in Altus and on March 18, 1944 she married Orville “Buddy” Ware in Altus. Two daughters were born of this union. During her life she worked in farming, as a waitress and a presser in various cleaners in town. In 1976 Don Nell and Buddy opened Buddy’s Cleaners and were operating it when Buddy passed away May 9, 1984. Don Nell continued to operate Buddy’s Cleaners until her retirement in 1991. On February 18, 1995 she married Wayne Graves and he preceded her in death on November 29, 2008. She suffered from a stroke in 2003, but always kept a happy outlook on life and was always laughing and smiling. She loved collecting dolls and going to the senior citizens dances before her stroke. She also enjoyed being with her friends, especially her friends at adult day care. She had been a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Altus. Don Nell loved her family and loved being with them and she will be missed very much. | GOODMAN Tommy Will Goodman, age 78, of Mangum, passed away late Tuesday evening at Mangum Community Hospital. Tommy was born on October 13, 1930, at Reed, Oklahoma to Adolphus and Viola (Bogart) Goodman. Moving to Vinson as a teenager, the family later moved to Mangum where he graduated from high school in 1950. On August 12, 1950, he married Ethel White, the love of his life, and they spent the next fifty-eight wonderful years together. Working as grocery store butcher for a short time, Tommy later spent thirty-one years as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Mangum. After his retirement, Tommy faithfully visited the hospital and nursing home on a near daily routine. A Godly man, Tommy faithfully served the Mangum Church of Christ as a deacon, and later an elder for many years. In his spare time, he worked with the Greer County Election Board and was known to drink coffee with many of his friends in the local restaurants, but his favorite pastime was keeping his grandchildren and caring for his friends and family. | GREGG Thurman A. Gregg passed from this life on Saturday May 30, 2009, in Nashville, Tennessee. He was surrounded by family and friends, his four sons were there at his bedside at his passing. Thurman was 92 years old. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Josephine (Jo) Gregg. He is survived by his four sons, Danny Thurman Gregg and wife Lisa of Nashville Tennessee, William Paul Gregg and wife Leslie of Nashville Tennessee, Joey Shane Gregg and wife Debbie of Wichita Falls, Texas, Nicky Darin Gregg and wife Kimberly of Lebanon, Tennessee; eleven grandchildren, Cassidy, Cody, Carson, Colt, Mallory, McKenzie, Shane, Lee Dustin, Skylar, Duncan, Maggie Jo and two great grandchildren, Tristan and Emma; one brother Weber Gregg of Cordell, Oklahoma. Thurman was born in Willow Point, Texas on April 6, 1917. His family moved to Cordell, Oklahoma where he spent most of his growing up years. Thurman was an army veteran and served his country during World War II. After the war Thurman married Elizabeth Josephine (Jo) Duncan on February 8, 1947. They made their home in Altus, Oklahoma where they raised their four sons. Thurman made his living as a farmer/rancher and later in life became the owner/operator of Gregg’s Car Wash in downtown Altus. Thurman was a long time member of the Elm and Hudson Church of Christ. He was a member of Martha Farmer’s Co-op. Thurman also served as a member of the Altus Public School Board of Education. Thurman lived his life in service to his country and the community in which he lived. He was a faithful husband and a hero to his sons. Thurman loved his God and Lord Jesus Christ and lived a life of integrity and character. Thurman will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.
