SEGURD  GUSTAVES (SEG) HOVE

Seg Hove passed away Saturday, March 10, 2007, in Altus after 99 years of living for others. Seg was born in
1907, a few months before Oklahoma became a state, in a dugout near Olustee.  He lived most all his life in
Jackson County, attending school at Grandview, Prairie Hill, and Duke.  Seg graduated from Oklahoma A & M
with a degree in Education and held teaching positions in Fieldton, Texas and Prairie Hill before becoming a
teacher and coach at Altus Junior High in 1935.  His football team never lost a game.  He was Principal of Wilson
Elementary School, now named the Seg Hove Center, for thirty-seven years, until his retirement in 1972.
During his teaching career, he only missed one day to have his tonsils removed.
At Wilson, “Mr. Hove” was mentor to thousands of children and a father figure to many.  He believed in the
doctrine of starting children off right in the formative years.  Anywhere around Altus, he was likely to be noticed
and spoken to by his former pupils, and he welcomed the chance to talk to his beloved students.  He was loved
and respected by all.  As one lady told it, “Mr. Hove treated us just like everyone else.  He never showed
favorites.  We were all equally important to him.”
Before and after retirement, Seg was active in many service and volunteer organizations focused on working
with children.  He worked with the Altus Boy Scouts of America for 35 years and as a Director in children’s
Sunday school classes at the First Baptist Church.  Seg volunteered with the Oklahoma Lung Association for 40
years and was on their State Board of Directors.  He served as Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
After joining the Kiwanis Club in 1938, he became a loyal member and willing volunteer.  He was very active in
Travelogue ticket sales, broom sales, and Safety Town.  He was President in 1973-1974 and had over 35 years
of perfect attendance.  He exemplified the Kiwanis theme of “Light Up a Life”.
Seg performed extensive work at the Museum of the Western Prairie restoring antique farm machinery.  He
served many years on the Museum’s Board of Directors, and was made “Honorary Curator of Farming Tools
and Machinery” by the Oklahoma Historical Society.
In addition to teaching and volunteering, Seg farmed the land that he grew up on.  His parents immigrated to the
United States from Norway.  He was married to Edna Johnston Hove, who preceded him in death.  He is survived
by two children, Larry Hove of Fort Worth and Karen Hove Howard of Ponca City.  Larry is married to Betty
Murrell Hove, formerly of Altus; they have two children, Jennifer and Eric Hove.  Karen’s husband is Bob
Howard; their children are Jay Howard and Bree Moseley.  Great grandchildren are Emily and Porter Moseley,
Riley and Cole Hove, Conor Seg and Devon Kilkenny, and Ella Howard.
The family would like to express special thanks to Carolyn Watson, Seg’s devoted caregiver; to the ladies at
Friendship Inn Restaurant, who gave much more than just good food; to Jackson County Hospice, a truly caring
organization; and to Dr. Randy Sheets, a special physician.

HENDERSON

Winnie Louise Hawkins Henderson, age 72, formerly of Altus, passed away late Saturday evening, December 1,
2007, at Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Mrs. Hawkins was born to Alzada and Robert Hawkins on July 7, 1935, in Jacksonville, Texas.  She was the only
child to that blessed union.  Her parents moved to Altus when she was very young.

Louise was educated in the Altus school system and graduated from Lincoln High School.  She later worked as
Teacher’s Assistant at Lincoln and Heavenly Tots Day Care and continued to work in positions where she could
share her love and nurturing spirit to others.

At an early age she joined Macedonia Baptist Church where she was very active.  Later she joined New Hope
Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for twenty-seven years.  She served in many capacities
including President of the Pastor’s Aide Committee, President of the Choir, and President of the General
Mission.  After a brief illness she and her husband moved to Oklahoma City.  She then became the blessed
Mother Henderson of Kingdom Ministries.  Louise had a strong belief and faith in the Lord and was a living
example of the power of HIS word.  She believed that it was not just enough to say you belong to a church but
she believed in being involved which meant “when the church doors are open I will be there”.  She was admired
for her queenly attire and taste for fashionable dress from head to toe with matching hats, shoes, suits and
purse.  That’s just the way Louise rolled.

Louise was the proud Mother of nine children of which two children preceded her in death.  She raised her
children in a God fearing home and even though she didn’t have much like most mothers in her neighborhood,
the home was never lacking for ‘love and discipline’.  She would say, “If you give your word or if you set out to do
something you need to do it”.  She was very direct and outspoken, but people didn’t usually mind because she
was always “telling it like it is”.  Louise loved people and loved being involved in community events especially
‘The Lincoln High School Reunion’.  You could always count on her and her faithful sidekick, Ms. Bobbie Faye, to
be on the door from sunup and sundown.  And no, if you didn’t pay, you couldn’t get in.  Louise treated everyone
the same.  She never met a stranger and was always willing to speak a kind word or do a good deed for anyone
in need.  She loved people and people loved her.

Later in life Louise met Joe Henderson who was to become her husband for twenty-seven years.  For twenty-
seven years they epitomized the love that husbands and wives should share.  They were truly living witnesses of
what God can do when two people decide to put HIM first in their lives.

Her parents Alzada and Robert, and two children, Cedric and Angela, preceded her in death.  Willie Louise leave
to cherish her memory, her husband Joe Lewis Henderson of Oklahoma City; four sons, Randel Hawkins (Elaine)
of Altus, Donald Dean Riley of Oklahoma City, Roy Douglas Hawkins (Cherry) Houston, Texas and Bobby
Hawkins of Wichita Kansas; three daughters, Linda Obleton (James) of Accokeek, Maryland, Lisa White (Kelvin)
of Lumberton New Jersey and Carmen Wynn (Albert) of Oklahoma City; one step daughter, Lafonda Henderson
of Oklahoma City; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one god daughter, Terria Copeland of
Altus along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends that will always cherish and
