| Mary Orta Mary Orta, 87, of Altus, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Mary was born April 2, 1920, in Raymondville, Texas, to Franciso and Manuela (Salazar) Betancourt. Mary moved to Altus in 1950 from Kingsville, Texas. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. She worked for many years chopping and picking cotton. She is preceded in death by her husband Alejandro Orta, and a son Roberto Orta, who lived in Altus, Oklahoma, and Miami, Florida; three brothers-in-law Luis Orta, Georgio Orta from Corpus Christi, Texas, and Florencio Orta from Hereford, Texas. She is survived by her son Eddie Betancourt of Robstown, Texas, daughter Mary Uriegas of Altus, Oklahoma, daughter Gayla and Alex Guerra of Altus, Oklahoma, son Federico and Mary Jane Betancourt of Altanta, Georgia, daughter Dora of Denver, Colorado, daughter Silbia and Lupe Sanchez of Abilene,Texas, daughter Delia Exley of Dallas, Texas; granddaughter Brenda and Manuel Linares of Altus, Oklahoma, grandson Chris and Rosalinda Reeves of Altus, Oklahoma, grandson Danny and Michelle Sanchez of Irving, Texas, and granddaughter Diane Sanchez of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 51 plus great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Maggie Flores. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, Dec 13, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Altus. Funeral Services for Mary Orta will be 11:00 am Friday, Dec 14 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church with Reverend Prabhakar Kalivela officiating. | Jane Oden Jane Oden, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, revered friend and respected advocate for the poor, imprisoned and hungry, passed away Sunday, June 22. She was 76. Rebecca Jane Hazlitt was born in Garden City, Kansas in the depth of the Great Depression, the daughter of John M. Hazlitt and Mary Blanche Hightower Hazlitt. Her family moved to southern Illinois for several years before returning to Pauls Valley, Oklahoma where she graduated from high school. Jane attended Oklahoma College for Women and the University of Oklahoma, earning a degree in Early Childhood Education. While at OU Jane married Tal Oden, a law school student, in 1951. After graduation they moved to Altus, Tal’ s birthplace, where he practiced law and they raised four children. Jane valued her own roots in Altus as her great-grandparents, the Hightowers and Allens, were among its early settlers in the late 1880’s. Jane taught kindergarten for Grace Methodist Day School and later was office assistant for Tal Oden Law Office until her retirement in 2000. Jane immersed herself in church and community life through Grace United Methodist Church ministries, United Methodist Women, the Salvation Army Board, creation of Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice, Associated Christian Ministries Inc. (AMCI), Jackson County Democratic Women, and her special passion for Threshold Services, a ministry that helps women inmates find footing and independence as productive citizens in the community. Her heart for activism kept Jane lobbying legislators and influentials by letter, phone, e-mail and personal intervention for Bread for the World, a national citizen’s lobby for eradicating hunger; for Heifer International, a program that helps third-world families gain self-sustenance with gifts of livestock; and for elimination of the death penalty. Earlier Jane served on the Oklahoma Endowment for the Humanities, helped establish the Shortgrass Arts & Humanities Council in Altus, served on the Post Adjudicative Review Board for children under court supervision, was active in the Gamma Mothers Club, Class Parents, Main Street Altus, the Western Trail Historical Society, the MacDowell Club of Allied Art and was a member in Chapter GQ of P.E.O. Jane is survived by her husband Tal Oden of the home in Altus; son Tal and wife Janet Oden and son Tim and wife Susan Oden, of Oklahoma City; daughter Amy Oden and husband Perry Williams of Riverdale, MD; and son Andy and wife Adrienne Oden, of Edmond, OK; by her brothers John M. Hazlitt of Estes Park, CO, and Rev. Joseph A. Hazlitt of Wynnewood, OK; and by grandchildren Ryan, Drew, Ryan, Austin, Tuck, Sarah, Walker, Avery, Emerson and Bennett. The family will receive friends at Lowell-Tims on Thursday evening between 6:00 & 7:00 P.M. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 27 at First United Methodist Church of Altus, celebrated with the leadership of Oklahoma United Methodist Bishop Robert Hayes, Rev. David Player and Rev. | Elizabeth Amethyst Osborn Elizabeth Amethyst Osborn, infant daughter of Brad and Crystal (Redman) Osborn, died unexpectedly at 2:40 p.m., July 18, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Elizabeth will be greatly missed and always loved. Our little angel was lent to us for such a short time but filled our hearts forever. Many other family members and friends are saddened by her loss. May she live on in our hearts and know she is with other loved ones who have passed before her. She is survived by her loving parents, Brad and Crystal Osborn; her big brother, Patrick Osborn, all of the home in Altus; her grandparents, Vickie and Richard Redman and Marion Bruce Osborn, all of Altus; her aunts and uncles, Teresa and Bradley Downs, Terry Osborn, all of Altus, and Valerie and Adam Osborn of Enid; her cousins, Andrew Downs of Altus, Destiney Osborn of Mangum, Dylan Osborn of Enid, Bryce Osborn of Altus, Ryan Osborn and Madison Osborn, both of Enid, and Carley Osborn of Altus. | Onan Anne B. Onan, 68, of Duke, Oklahoma, passed away Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at her residence. Anne was born November 21, 1939, in Amarillo, Texas, to J.H. and Vera (Allee) Bennett. She graduated from Palo Duro High School in 1958. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Amarillo. Anne married Charles Onan July 15, 1963, in Clovis, New Mexico. To this union, two daughters, Dana and Tammy, were born. Together, they shared five children. Anne spent many years helping Charles with the family farm and managing a local business. She enjoyed fishing with Charles, working in her yard, and spending time with her family. Her greatest treasures in life were her grandchildren. Her parents and one brother, Durwood Bennett, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Charles, of the home; one brother, Granville Bennett of Oceanside, California; daughter, Dana DeSapio and husband Noel of Cedar Park, Texas; daughter, Tammy Brooks and husband Greg of Granite, Oklahoma; daughter Caleen Boatright of Austin, Texas; stepson, David Onan and wife Patty of Sarasota, Florida; step-daughter, Terri Smith of Sarasota, Florida; seven grandchildren, Christina Onan, Brittany Garrison, Ashton Garrison, Brandon DeSapio, Kirby Brooks, Brady Brooks, Tracy Boatright; four great-grandchildren, and a little boy who held a very special place in her heart, Dillon Onan Herron. | Ornelas Rogelio Mendez Ornelas, 56, of Altus, passed away at his home Wednesday, May 13, 2009. Rogelio was born March 8, 1953, in San Diego de la Union, Guanajuato, Mexico, to Pedro and Isidra (Mendez) Ornelas. He spent his youth in Mexico and came to Altus over thirty-five years ago. He worked hard all his life and enjoyed the many jobs he had over the years. When he first came to Altus, Rogelio worked at the Cotton Compress and also in the oil fields. He worked for Bar-S in the early 1990’s and later from 2004 to 2005. He was also a plumber and worked for Castro Plumbing and Castillo Plumbing. His favorite hobby was playing and watching soccer games. He was a member of the Catholic Church. Rogelio is survived by his parents, Pedro Ornelas and Isidra Acevedo of Guanajuato, Mexico; his four children, Rojelio Ornelas, Jr. of Oklahoma City, Cassandra Ornelas, Crystal Ornelas, and Laura Perez, all of Altus; his sisters and brothers, Antonia Ornelas, Luz Ornelas, Juan Carlos Ornelas, and Angeles Aguilar; one granddaughter, Araceli “Sally” Villegas of Altus, and many nieces and nephews. One daughter, Araceli “Sally” Perez, preceded him in death in 1998. A Rosary will be held 6:00 p.m. Sunday, May 17 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Altus. The Funeral Mass for Rogelio Ornelas will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 18, 2009, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church with Reverend Joseph Sundar Pudota officiating.
