Chauncey Barrett

Chauncey Barrett, of Altus, went to be with his Lord on Monday, July 19,
2010. He and his identical twin brother, Charles, were born September 21,
1921, to Charles and Eva Barrett of Martha. He grew up on the family farm
northwest of Martha. Chauncey attended Martha schools, where he was
active in the High School band. He was a graduate of the Altus Junior College.

He married Ruth Caves September 6, 1941, in Oklahoma City, and she was
the love of his life. He would often attribute their long lasting marriage to the
daily habit they began shortly after establishing their home of beginning each
morning reading the Bible and praying together. They were very active in the
Martha Baptist Church where Chauncey served for many years as Sunday
School Superintendent, teacher of the men’s Bible class, and deacon. He also
served on the Martha School Board for 25 years. In 1983, he and his wife
became members of the First Baptist Church of Altus. They taught a class for
young married couples for a number of years. Following this, he taught the
adult men’s class for 20 years. He also served in the capacity of deacon.
Chauncey was an active Gideon, speaking all over the state of Oklahoma. He
held multiple offices, including State Chaplain.

Known for his unwavering honesty and integrity, he and his identical twin,
recognized in the area as the Barrett Brothers, farmed together for many
years. In 1972, they received the Master of Agronomy Award from
Oklahoma State University. In 1974, they were featured, along with one of
their Steiger Tractors, on the cover of the Farmer Stockman Magazine.
Chauncey served on the National Cotton Council for 10 years. In 2002, he
was inducted into the Western State College Hall of Fame.

Chauncey is survived by his wife Ruth of Altus; daughters, Dana Gant and
husband Joe of Plano, Texas, and Betty Barrett of Los Angeles, Calif.;
granddaughters, Melinda Burns and husband Mike of Longview, Texas, and
Lisa Hollin and husband Jeff of Frisco, Texas; eight great-grandchildren,
