Cleo Beatrice Beavers

Cleo Beatrice Beavers, 96, of Altus, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010.  Funeral
services will be held 11:00am Friday, March 19, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Altus with
Dr. Jeff Moore officiating.  Burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of
Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

Cleo was born June 212, 1913 in Tours, Texas to Mattie Maude (Niles) and Bethel Claud
Zumbro.  The family moved to the Friendship community, Jackson County, Oklahoma in 1922.  
Cleo was active in the friendship Baptist Church, Jackson County 4-H Club, and played on the
Ozark High School basketball team.  She graduated from Ozark High School.

On March 10, 1934, she married Sam Beavers of Blair.  To this union two daughters were born,
Patsy and Neta.  They were married 41 years and he preceded her in death in 1975.  In 1982
she married William F. Barnett who preceded her in death in 1995.

In 1936, Cleo graduated from Standard Beauty Academy, Hobart where she earned a license as
an operator and instructor of cosmetology.  She worked in this profession for 40 years most of
which she owned and operated Cleo’s Beauty Shop.

Cleo was a member of First Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery for several years
before her retirement in 1975.  She later volunteered for the American Cancer Society and
donated cosmetology services to all children at Victory Children’s Home.  She was a member of
the Business and Professional Women’s Association.

Preceding her in death were her husbands, her parents, two brothers, and two sisters.  She is
survived by her children, Patsy and Arnold Goucher of Altus and Neta and Nolan Walker of
Blair, along with her grandchildren Renee’ and Mickey Gunkel of Altus and great-grandsons
Preston Gunkel of Norman and Dalton Gunkel of Altus.
