Juanita Jo Adams, age 80, of Altus and formerly of Olustee, passed away Wednesday morning, August 16, 2017, at Plantation Village Nursing Center, in Altus.
Mrs. Adams was born in Olustee, Oklahoma, on March 24, 1937, to William “Bill” and Willie Jo (Stephens) Evans. A 1955 graduate of Olustee School, Nita worked as a switchboard operator in Dayton, Ohio for a short time. Returning to Olustee for a visit and after a short courtship, Nita met Roy Paul Adams, Sr., the love of her life, and they were married, in Vernon, Texas, on August 30, 1958. Roy preceded her in death on November 21, 2013, after fifty-five wonderful years of marriage. After their marriage they made their home in Olustee for a short time, then the family moved to Ohio and Iowa where Roy was a timber buyer, Returning to Olustee in 1968, Nita began working as a cook for Olustee School where she spent the next forty years making the best meals in southwest Oklahoma, especially the homemade rolls and cinnamon rolls, which were her specialty. During the summers, Nita cooked at local cafes and if there were two cafes open, the owners competed against each other to hire Nita. Nita’s life was centered around her family. Baseball, basketball, any sport or any activity that her children and grandchildren were in, you could find Nita in attendance, cheering them on.
