| Sawyer James Christopher Sawyer, age 38, of Lawton, Oklahoma, passed away January 13, 2009 in Lawton. James was born May 21, 1970 in Altus, Oklahoma. He was the son of Janice Thomas and James D. Sawyer. He was a veteran having proudly served during Desert Storm with the United States Army. After his release from the military, he was studying to become a Graphic Designer. He was currently working in the construction field in Lawton where he could be close to his son. Mr. Sawyer was preceded in death by his younger brother, Tracy Lee Sawyer. He is lovingly survived by his mother, Janice Thomas of Somersworth, New Hampshire; his father, James D. Sawyer of Florida; one son, James David “J.D.” Sawyer of Lawton, Oklahoma; one daughter, Francesca Sawyer of Maine; two sisters, Barbara Ellen Sawyer of Tampa, Florida and Jennifer Linn Somersworth,New Hampshire; and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. | SMITH Lois Madge Smith, 92, longtime resident of Eldorado, passed away on March 7, 2009, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Lois was born on December 20, 1916, in Quanah, Texas to Lester and Willie Gossett. She married George Henry Smith on August 13, 1932. They made their home in Eldorado where they celebrated 51 years of marriage together. Lois was a loving wife and devoted mother. Family always came first and she and her husband were loving caregivers to their parents and their daughter for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Lois is survived by two daughters, Paula Ledbetter and Ann Tinney both of Eldorado, and a son, Bill Smith and wife Pam of Blue Springs, Missouri. Also surviving are ten grandchildren: Joy Whitlock & husband Mark of Altus; Danny Campsey of Quanah, Texas; Billy Ray Tinney, David Ledbetter & wife Tabitha, and Jimmie and Michael Tinney all of Eldorado; Savannah Smith of Blue Springs, Missouri; Bobby Smith & wife Alice of Alliance, Nebraska; Billy George Smith of Altus, and Tina Sparkman of Quanah. She is also survived by eighteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Lois was especially proud of having five generations of girls. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Peggy Gossett of Quanah, Texas, and special cousin Willie Jo Seitz. Lois was preceded in death by her husband George Smith, daughter Eva Lois Brewer, grandson Jimmy Paul Tinney, great-granddaughter Kassie May Sparkman, brother Clinton Gossett, and parents Lester and Willie Gossett and William and Nancy Smith. | SHEPPARD Rex Gilbert Sheppard, age 72, of Mangum, passed away early Monday morning, April 13, 2009, at Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton. Rex was born on August 13, 1936, in Fairview, Oklahoma to Gilbert and Luella (Stark) Sheppard. After graduating from Eastview High School in 1955, he married the love of his life, Mary Beth Barker, on July 1, 1956, in Granite. They spent the next fifty-two wonderful years together before her death on September 23, 2008. An expert mechanic most of his life, Rex loved working on and restoring old cars, but the things he loved the most of all in his life was taking care of his family, especially his great grandchildren who were “his babies”. Preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Mary, and his sister, Karol Clayton, Rex is survived by one daughter, Sherrie Denise Kendall and husband Keith of Mangum; two grandsons, Jeremy Brandon Kendall and wife Jaclyn of Mangum and Nicholas Keith Kendall and wife Kassi of Mangum; three great grandchildren, Jayli Elizabeth Kendall, J.J. Kendall and Alexa Mekale Kendall all of Mangum and many other relatives and a host of dear friends. | Simpson Crystal Rose Simpson, age 57, of Oklahoma City and formerly of Altus, passed away at her home, in Oklahoma City, on Saturday, June 27, 2009. Born in Altus on July 20, 1951, to Charles and Mary (Hudson) Abernathy, Crystal graduated from Altus High School in 1969. After graduation, she attended Oklahoma University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University before moving to Phoenix, Arizona where she worked as a legal assistant. After moving back to Altus in the late 70’s, she completed her degree at Cameron University, in Lawton, and met the love of her life, Pat Simpson. They were married on March 13, 1982, in Altus, and spent the next twenty-seven wonderful years together before her death. After their marriage, Crystal and Pat owned and operated the Crystal Rose Restaurant and Crystal’s Restaurant, in the Ramada Inn. Crystal later worked at Western Oklahoma State College and owned the Diet Center in Altus before moving to Charleston, South Carolina in 1994. In November 2006, Crystal and Pat moved to Oklahoma City where they made their home until her death. Crystal loved watching Law and Order, reading and spending time with her family and friends. Crystal is survived by her husband, Pat, of the home; her parents, Charles and Mary Abernathy of Altus; one brother, Clint Abernathy and wife Kim of Altus; two step-children, Zack Simpson and wife Jasmine of Sachse, Texas and Tricia Johnson and husband Kai of Carrollton, Texas; three step-grandchildren, Jaxon Simpson of Sachse, Texas, Jake Johnson and Dane Johnson of Carrollton, Texas along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. | Suttle Coy Wilton Suttle, Jr., 84, longtime Altus resident, passed away Tuesday morning, June 30, 2009, at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Lawton. Coy was born October 19, 1924, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, to Coy Wilton and Ruth Marie (Purdam) Suttle. He graduated from Lawton High School in 1943. Coy joined the Navy August 6, 1943, and served his country during World War II until 1946. He married Oma Marie Gentry May 24, 1946, in Lawton, Oklahoma. They moved to Altus in 1948 and Coy worked at the Altus Music Company from 1953 to 1958. He later went to work as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service and retired from there after twenty-eight years as a dedicated employee. Coy was a lifetime member of the Altus VFW, the Scottish Rites in Guthrie, the India Shrine in Oklahoma City, and a proud member of the Altus Masonic Lodge #62. He and Oma were faithful members of the First Baptist Church in Altus. He is survived by his loving wife, Oma Suttle, of Altus; two daughters, Kay Marie Mercer of Altus and Sheryl Jean Kinder and husband Steve of Anderson, South Carolina; one brother, Lester Suttle and wife Esther of Lawton; four grandchildren, Catherine Marie Mercer, Robert Wilton Mercer and wife Ashley, Toby Wilson, and Erin Wilson; two great-grandchildren, Taygan Don Wilson and Gabryel Wolf Mercer; three nieces, Jane Anne Clark and husband Curtis, Jimmie Louise LeHew and husband Mike, and Karen Shaffer, and one nephew, Gary Suttle. Extended family and many friends also survive him. Coy was preceded in death by his father, Coy Wilton Suttle, Sr.; his mother, Ruth Marie Suttle; one son-in-law, Dennis Mercer; his mother-in-law, Anna Story Gentry; a brother-in-law, James Gentry, and one sister-in-law, Mary Louise Wilson Gentry. | Lou Ann Shorney Lou Ann Shorney was born April 21, 1932 in Jackson County near Friendship, Oklahoma. She entered into rest July 26, 2009 in Altus, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of the late Henry Wiginton and Lou Baker. She attended and graduated from Altus High School in 1950. She married Sonny Tims and, to this union, three children were born: Terry, Pam, and Timmy Tims. She worked for Tims Funeral Home for 20 years. Upon leaving Altus, Lou Ann moved to Norman, Oklahoma where the University of Oklahoma employed her as the Executive Basketball Secretary. She served the University under the coaching of Dave Bliss and Billy Tubbs. She retired from the University of Oklahoma after thirtreen years of service. While in Norman, she met and married Bob Shorney in 1980. She and Bob were members of the University of Oklahoma Tip In Club and endlessly supported the Sooners. Following the death of her husband Bob, she moved back to Altus to be close to her grandchildren. She followed every activity in which her grandchildren participated. Western Oklahoma State College then employed her in the Athletic Department where all the students extended her youth, and the faculty became like family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, loved playing Bingo, and adored her three grandchildren. Lou Ann was preceded in death by her husband Bob Shorney, Father and Mother, Lou and Henry Wiginton, brother Dow Wiginton, and Sister Earlene Wiginton. Survivors include: Terry Tims and wife Barbara of Altus, Pam Tims of Oklahoma City, Timmy Tims and wife Amber of Altus. Three grandchildren: Tyler Tims and wife Kara of Altus, Taylor Camp and husband Al of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Evan Tims of Altus. Also survived are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. A person who loved without judgment, supported without question, and encouraged with the fullest of grace, Lou Ann embodied these things. To know Lou Ann was to know true joy and unconditional love. With each encounter a person understood what real love was. And, with ‘Real [love], you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.’ (Velveteen Rabbit) The lives of those who knew her are greater having experienced her great love and compassion. Services for Lou Ann Shorney will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend David Player and Reverend Keith Wiginton officiating. | Sturdevant Henry Sturdevant, 58, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010, at his home in Headrick, Oklahoma. He was born January 21, 1952, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Harvey P. and Ollie (Nidell) Sturdevant. He married Mary Ann Welsh March 26, 1971, in Youngstown, Ohio. He joined the military and served twenty-one years and retired October 1, 1991, as TSgt, and then went to work in Civil Service as an Aircraft Mechanic. Henry and Mary Ann moved from McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey to Jackson County, where they have lived for the past thirty-two years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, sitting in his garage, riding four-wheelers, playing cards, watching NASCAR, working on old cars, and collecting trains. Preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Ollie Sturdevant and one sister-in-law, Julie, Henry is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Sturdevant of the home in Headrick; his children, Lori of Norman, Oklahoma, Thomas and wife Mitzi, Steven Sturdevant and Misty, all of Altus, Oklahoma, and Colleen and husband Kent Holland of Snyder, Oklahoma; one brother, Harvey Page Sturdevant, Jr.; and grandchildren, Brian, Sarina, Sommer, Sabastian, Hayley, Shyanne, Samantha, Tanner, and Hunter.
