SHAFER

William (Bill) Noel Shafer, age 87 of Altus, passed away early Tuesday morning, August 29, 2006 at Tamarack
Retirement Center.

Bill was born on May 11, 1919 at Tishomingo, Oklahoma to Henry Noel and Dulcie (Smith) Shafer.  He graduated
from Dickson High School in Carter County in 1937 and received a bachelor’s degree in industrial education from
East Central State Teachers’ College in 1941.  On September 5, 1940 he married Norma Lou McClain in Durant
and they spent fifty wonderful years together before her death in 1991.

Bill was a vocational counselor at Ft. Sam Houston during World War II.  He taught industrial education at
Seminole Junior College before being employed by Altus Junior College in 1948.  He earned a master’s degree in
industrial education from Oklahoma State University in 1951.

Shafer created the drafting department at Altus Junior College, when classes were held in an old barracks building
near the Altus High School.  Known for his humor, Shafer said that he and Mason Dickerson, former speech
instructor, called his first drafting class a “cla” because it wasn’t big enough to need a whole word to describe it.
Asked if the 1976 move to the current campus was difficult, Shafer said, “Not really.  All I had to move was my
grade book.  We didn’t have money for anything else.”

Bill always spoke fondly of his days at Western Oklahoma State College and the Altus community.  “The faculty
was just like a big old family and had a lot of fun.  If I had a choice and had it to do over, I’d pick Altus,” he said.
A member of the Oklahoma Education Association, National Education Association, and the IOTA LAMBA
SIGMA at OSU, he attended the First Baptist Church of Altus.

Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Norma Lou, two brothers and one sister, Bill is survived by three

Nicole (Strawn) Smith

After a 10 month battle with a rare cancer called sarcomatoid mesothelioma, Nicole (Strawn) Smith, age 34, passed
away February 1, 2007.  She was surrounded by family.
Nicole, since a child, has loved animals of all types and worked at the Hollis Vet Clinic for a short time.  Nicole showed
Polled Hereford cattle and won top honors in both showmanship and grooming competitions.  She was proud of these
accomplishments.
Nicole married Damon Smith (from Hollis) in 1995.  Nicole loved her husband, but she especially loved her daughter
Tayler Smith, age 9.  Nicole was a dedicated and loving mother.  Her life was consumed with love for Tayler.  Nicole
worked for two years as a cross walk guard at Tayler’s school and many people in Elk City knew Nicole as the “cross-
walk lady.”  Nicole was adored by many, and she received great pleasure from her cross-walk work.
Nicole left an impression on everyone whom she met.  Her smile and green eyes are unforgettable.  Nicole had a great
sense of humor and her smile and humor were contagious.  Nicole was always willing to help others.  Nicole was
especially helpful to her two siblings, Greg and David.  She was a person always willing to accept without judgment and
give support and encouragement.  To both Greg and David, Nicole always knew the right thing to say at exactly the right
time.  Without her strength, our lives would be very different.  Nicole helped many people “get on the right path.”  She
was an angel on earth and never gave up on anyone.  Nicole was always there to lean on.  She shared her strength with
confidence and compassion.
Nicole is sadly missed by her family:  Damon Smith and Tayler Smith, both of Elk City; Nicole’s parents, Jim and Linda
Strawn of Eldorado; brothers, David Strawn, also of Eldorado and Greg Strawn and wife Lori, along with their children:
