| TABB Gordon Lee Tabb, age 76 of Lawton and formerly of Altus, passed away on Sunday evening, July 30, 2006 at Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton. Mr. Tabb was born on August 12, 1929 at Porter, south of Altus, to Ivan Ernest and Annie (Box) Tabb and graduated from Humphrey High School. A proud veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Tabb served his country during the Korean War and was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. In 1963, he married Gladys Prestage, in Lawton, and to this union, one daughter was born. Gordon later moved his family to Borger, Texas where he worked as an equipment service technician, repairing musical and entertainment equipment. In 1970, he took early retirement due to his declining health. Preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wilma Williams, he is survived by one daughter, Diana Goold and husband Bill of Edgewood, New Mexico; one step son, Larry Riley and wife Darla of Lawton; one sister, Leta Wynona Blankenship of Eufaula, Oklahoma and one brother, Ivan Doyle Tabb along with many other relatives and friends. | Joshua Telford Joshua Telford was born on May 11, 1920 in Chapel Hill, Texas to Robert and Rosana Telford. They later moved to Altus, Oklahoma when he was six years old. He began his school years at Lincoln School, where Mr. Kenyon was principal and later our own W.C. Davis. Joshua went on to complete the eleventh grade. While he was a young man, he helped Mr. Holloway raise swine. He would drive a small wagon with a donkey hitched to it, to go and get garbage from restaurants to feed the swine. When Josh was old enough he enlisted into the U.S. Army and served three years, where he worked with the military police. He received an honorable discharge February 1,1946. After his discharge from the Army he married Earlene Carroll and the marriage lasted until her death. Joshua started to work for Mr. Melvin Johnson who owned the “Coconut Club”, The Hide Away restaurant and another place on Nona as it was call then. Josh, as he was called for short was manager and bouncer and he did an excellent job in that capacity. He use to tell us, that it was nothing for Mr. Melvin to make three #2 tubs of money on a weekend. He trusted Josh explicitly. He was hired at the electric department by the City of Altus and worked there for several years. After leaving that department, he was hired by the Altus Police Department and the streets all over town. All of the businesses knew and respected Mr. Josh Telford. He was known and loved by all of Altusans except those who chose to break the law. After retiring from the police department he worked for the Altus Public Schools as a security officer. Joshua met and married Sara Kenyon who taught school in the Altus Public School System. To that union one daughter was born Frances Telford Pippins of Arlington, Texas. He is survived by his wife Sara, one daughter Frances and husband Richard, two sons, Connie Gardley of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Clarence Jefferson and wife Marcella of Altus, Oklahoma; seven nieces, Sandra Smith and husband William, Fredreka Smith of Altus, Barbara Badgatt and Harriet Badgatt both of Lancaster, California, Rosa Newsome of Chapel Hill, Texas, Paulette Booker of Pacoima, California and Carol Siverand of Galveston, Texas; nephews, Jerry Williams and wife Ann of Strafford, Missouri, Robert Williams, Jr. and wife Doretha of Owasso, Oklahoma, Clarence Booker and Donnre Martin of Pacoima, California; grandchildren, Joshua, Theodore and Jerrod Pippins of Arlington, Texas, Connie Wayne West of Texas, Khaleaf, Kerjia and Klod Gardley of Clovis, New Mexico, Tychicus Jefferson of San Diego, California and great-grandson Cory Tenell. He is also survived by great-nieces and nephews are Miranda Howell and Etienne Purefory of Altus. These two helped their grandmother take special care of their great uncle when he needed them. Other great nieces are Carolyn Bakkar of St. Louis, Missouri, Valerie Risinger of Oklahoma City, Christina Smith of Altus; great-nephews, Jerry Williams Jr. of Mt. View, California, Joel Williams, of Strafford, Missouri, David Williams of Owasso, and Billy Smith of Altus. He is preceded in death by his parents, and Robert Telford, Rosana Telford, Ned Armstrong, Hester Badgatt, Francis Haskell, Marvin Armstrong, Leon Armstrong, Marie Booker, Mary Williams, Constance Wynne and Rosie Badgatt. | Ernestine Thompson Ernestine Thompson was born July 19, 1917 near Martha, Oklahoma to Ernest Wright Warren and Iva Mae Howard Warren. She married Garland Thompson on March 10, 1939. Ernestine graduated from Martha High School in 1935, attended Altus Junior College, and Central State Teachers College in Edmond. She graduated from Weatherford State Teacher’s College in Weatherford, Oklahoma. She taught 3rd grade and music classes at Porter High School for five years, then taught 3rd grade at Robert E. Lee in Altus for twenty-three years. When Robert E. Lee closed, she was transferred to Rivers where she taught 3rd grade for ten years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Excelsior Sunday school Class, Circle I, Retired Teachers of Jackson County, and Altus Literary Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Winfred, and husband Garland. She is survived by daughter Judy Dodson and husband Keith, Grandchildren Debbie Cox and husband Robert; Mark Dodson and wife Lisa; and Scott Dodson and wife Amy. Great Grandchildren are Carly Cox, Allison Cox and Chloe Cox , Marissa Dodson, Lauren Dodson and Cooper Dodson. Sisters in law are Ella Mae Thompson and Ernestine Thompson of Mangum, and a nephew Joe Thompson and wife Gerry, nieces; Sherri Banister and Ginger Renslow. Special friends are Ignacio and Josephine Martinez, Juanita, Junior, Bessie and Angel and their families. Very Special Caregivers were Mary Willeford, Erma Fortenberry and Erica Pantoja. | Twana Thomason Twana Lou Thomason, age 69 of Altus, Oklahoma passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. She was born May 12, 1936 at Friendship, Oklahoma to George Roy and Ollie (Thompson) Brake. Moving to Eldorado as a young girl, Twana later graduated from Eldorado High School in 1954. On December 21, 1954, she married the love of her life, Donald Thomason, and they spent fifty-one wonderful years together before her death. In 1962, they moved to Altus and established their home. For many years, Twana worked for Doctors Alva Hill, Mark Smith and Mark Goodman as a dental assistant before her retirement. As a member of the First Baptist Church, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who dearly loved her family and friends. She is survived by her husband Donald of the home in Altus, Oklahoma; three children Mark Thomason and wife Susan of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Steve Thomason and wife Teresa of Elmer, Oklahoma and Janna Roe of Altus, Oklahoma; three sisters Maxine Hogan of Mangum, Oklahoma, Clois Walker and husband David of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and Pat Lewis of Ft. Worth, Texas. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends. | Michael Don Thompson, Sr Michael Don Thompson, Sr., age 54 of Altus, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2005 as the result of a motor vehicle accident north of Altus. He was born March 31, 1951 in Altus, Oklahoma to Donald and Joy (Hall) Thompson. Mike had lived in the Altus community all of his life and was a graduate of Altus High School. He owned and operated a saddle shop for several years. When he wasn’t busy making a saddle for many of the cowboys in the community he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and he always enjoyed watching his son rope and cowboy. Mike is survived by his mother Joy Thompson of Altus, Oklahoma; two children, Jennifer Williams and husband Matt of Owasso, Oklahoma and Michael Thompson of Altus, Oklahoma, one sister Shelly O’Connor of Altus, Oklahoma, a grandchild on the way, one nephew D.J. O’Connor; and a host of other relatives and many, many friends. He is preceded in death by his father Don Thompson, and grandparents. | Virginia Holt Thomas Virginia Holt Thomas, of Altus, died Sunday, December 3, 2006 in Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Virginia was born August 24, 1915 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Roscoe and Dennis Holt. She attended Altus Public Schools from first grade until graduation from high school in 1931. Her college career included years at Gulf Park College in Mississippi and the University of Texas, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha social sorority. In 1934 Virginia married Gordon Hailey Thomas . They lived in El Paso, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona before returning to Altus to live in 1952. In the 1960’s along with raising her family, Virginia returned to her life long interest in art, painting, bridge, and travel. She was active with local art groups, and was past-president of the Southwest Art Association. She was a member of the Voguette Bridge Club, played Mah Jongg, traveled to New Mexico and Texas to paint, and traveled extensively worldwide. Virginia was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Church Women, where she designed and helped needlepoint the kneeling cushions in the church. She was also past secretary of the Western Trails Historical and Genealogical Society. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, and a granddaughter Elizabeth Murray Russell. She is survived by her husband Gordon, and a sister, Billie Sue Guysi, and brother-in-law George, of Woodlands, Texas. A daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bob Murray, two sons, Robert and his wife Pat, Steve and his wife Elaine, Five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive her. ARCHIE TARRANT Archie Ray Tarrant, age 65, a longtime resident of Sentinel, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2007, at his home in Sentinel. Archie was born on June 27, 1941 in Orlando, Oklahoma, to Lee Roy and Lola Belle (Stagner) Tarrant. On August 4, 1967, Archie married the love of his life, Barbara Johnson. Archie and Barbara were married over 39 years and raised two children. Archie was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sentinel where he was active in many aspects of the church. He worked for Halliburton for 25 years and retired in 2004. After he retired, Archie became a member of the Sentinel City Council and cared very much about the Sentinel community. Archie loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. In his spare time, Archie enjoyed caring for his cattle and taking his granddaughters to do “chores”. Ask anyone to describe Archie Tarrant and you will hear the words, “Archie was a good man” or “they don’t make men like that anymore”. Above all, Archie was the example of what a husband, father, grandfather, brother, father-in-law and friend should be. Archie will be dearly missed by anyone who ever knew him. Preceding Archie in death were his parents Lee Roy and Lola Belle Tarrant. | Paul E. Trent Paul E. Trent, age 78, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2007, in Oklahoma City. Services have been scheduled for Tuesday, March 6th at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Rev. Paul was born March 17, 1929 in Liberty, Oklahoma to D.H. and Edyth Velma (Truax) Trent. He attended Brinkman, Cordell and Harmony Schools before graduating from Altus High School in 1947. He continued his education at Oklahoma City University and graduated with a BS Degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma A&M in 1952. Paul farmed with his father and his associates for many years before deciding on a career change. In the mid 1960’s, Paul decided to become a salesman in order to use his “gift of gab”. He had always enjoyed visiting with people and this was the perfect way to earn a living and enjoy it at the same time. But as much as he enjoyed selling, his greatest love was his children. Paul loved to teach his children about the world by showing them the world. They shared many travels and adventures. He was a wonderful, loving father and left his children with a great legacy to pass on to their children. | TINNEY Jackie (Jack) Tinney, age 68, of Altus, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 11, 2007, at Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton. Jack was born on February 8, 1939, to Claude and Gertrude (Mayrhofen) Tinney in Martha. While attending Altus Schools, he began helping his dad with his plumbing business and followed in his dad’s footsteps, becoming a contract plumber, retiring in 2001. While attending Central Junior High, he met the love of his life, Marie Wood, and they were married on August 25, 1956, spending fifty-one wonderful years together before his death. Playing golf with his buddies, hunting and training his dogs to hunt were some of his favorite pastimes. Preceded in death by his parents, Jack is survived by his wife, Marie, of the home; one daughter, Sharon Graumann of Altus; one grandson, Matt Graumann of Altus; one sister, Fayrene Stickney of Altus; one uncle, Joe Mayrhofen of Altus; a special friend and hunting buddy, Steve Floyd of Altus, along with many other relatives and a host of friends. | TAYLOR Fern Bates Taylor, 93, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at the Plantation Village Nursing Center in Altus. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 23, 2007, at the Highland Park Baptist Church in Duncan with Rev. Winston Curtis officiating. Interment will follow at the Hobart Rose Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus. Fern was born on the family farm south of Hobart on February 1, 1914 to John Ayers Bates and Maude Elizabeth Cooper Bates. She graduated from Hobart High School and worked in the dry cleaning business. She married Raymond W. Taylor and moved to Duncan where they owned and operated the Sunshine Cleaners. He preceded her in death and Fern continued to operate the business until her retirement at almost eighty years of age. Fern is survived by her niece, Pam Roudebush and her husband Robert of Altus, and a nephew, John Elkins and his wife Donna of Mangum. She is also survived by a great-nephew, Scott Roudebush and his wife Michelle, two great-nieces, Kelley Roudebush Duncan and her husband Jeff, Kimberly Roudebush Picket and her husband Gregg, eight great-great nieces and nephews, Gant, Jake, Nick and Todd Duncan, Carson, Mason, and Hailey Pickett, Reagin Roudebush and many other relatives and friends. Fern was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, her parents, John and Maude Bates of Hobart, two sisters, Tressie Hein of Altus, Thelma Elkins of Mangum, and one infant brother, Willard Bates. | Thomas Franklin Levi Thomas, age 93, of Duke, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 14, 2007. Frank was born in Duke on March 28, 1914 to Carley Easter (Wampler) and Mitchell Levi Thomas, and was the next to youngest of seven boys. He started school at Rock School with Jemima Cunningham as his teacher and later he moved to Prairie Hill School where Eula Chadwick was his teacher. She also taught him when he moved to Duke School when he was in the seventh grade in 1927. Soon after this he had to quit school to find work, and worked for many farmers in the Duke area. Later he returned to school and received his high school diploma. He and his brother, Gene, published the Duke Times for 45 years. He was the assistant editor, and ran the linotype. After his retirement from the Times, he worked at the Duke School where he loved children and made friends with the staff as well. Mitzi Marquart from Duke was a friend of Franks from her childhood and held a special place in his heart. Frank was baptized in Turkey Creek when he was young. He was a long time member of the Duke United Methodist Church, where he has served as assistant treasurer for many years. Mr. Thomas was presented a Life Membership into the Duke Chamber of Commerce in 2003, honoring him as an outstanding citizen of the Duke community. Frank Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and his six brothers, Paul, John, Burt, Eugene, Joe, and Wesley. He is survived by several nieces and nephews including Linda Thomas Sherman of Cantonment, FL., David Mitchell Thomas and his wife Diana, of Oklahoma City, OK., and Joel Levi Thomas and his wife, Joyce, of Huntsville, AL. Also, Frank is survived by a special friend, Robetha Darby and her family. The Celebration of Life service for Frank Thomas will be held at the Duke United Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 17th at 10:00 am with Reverend Brett Thomasson officiating. | Hazel Anne Tigert Hazel Anne Tigert, age 90, of Altus, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Hazel Anne (Zumbro) Tigert was born to Maude and Claude Zumbro on December 17, 1917 in Denison, Texas. Hazel moved to Altus with her family in 1921. They lived in the Ozark community where she attended the Ozark school. She attended the Friendship Baptist Church, along with her family, and at the of 18 years accepted the Lord as her personal Savior. She was baptized at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Altus. In 1942 she married Carroll Tigert. They made their home in Altus and had 3 children, Ronnie Gene, Linda Renee and Erma Gay Tigert. Carroll and Hazel owned and operated the Altus Linen Supply. Hazel worked with Carroll in this business. She later worked at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in the Laundry Department, retiring in 1983. Hazel is preceded in death by her husband Carroll Tigert in December 19, 1973; baby girl Erma Gay in June19, 1948; son Ronnie Gene in June 6, 1985: mother and father Maude and Claude Zumbro; two brothers, Ray and Roy Zumbro; one sister Ople Maye Lasko. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Cox and husband Johnny of Altus, one sister Cleo Beaver Barnett of Altus, grandchildren Tonya Gay Tigert of Oklahoma City, Gary Tigert, of Oklahoma City, Christine Ward and husband Cody of Cabot, Arkansas, Randy Montgomery and wife Cindy of Vernon Texas, Shelly Morren and husband Jim, of Blair Oklahoma, Carolyn Richardson and husband Richy, of Mangum, Oklahoma, and Brandi Cox-Welch, of Altus, Oklahoma, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandson. | Carol (Moore) Turner Carol (Moore) Turner of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away at her home in Norman Monday, February 18, 2008, at the age of 63. Carol was born August 23, 1944, in Hollis, Oklahoma, to Ralph and Addie Lee (Sherman) Moore. She attended school and graduated from Hollis High School. Afterwards, she pursued her college career at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Carol married Kenneth “Bub” Norman in the summer of 1964 in Hollis. They had two children, Kristi and Jeremy Norman, whom they dearly loved. Carol worked for the State of Oklahoma for more than 30 years and was still working at the time of her death even though she was in ill health. Carol is survived by her daughter, Kristi Norman, of Norman, Oklahoma; one son, Jeremy Norman, of McKinney, Texas; two brothers, Monte Moore of Whitney, Texas, and Kenneth Moore of Hollis, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Her parents, Ralph and Addie Lee Moore, one brother, Bundy Moore, and three sisters-in-law, Charlene Moore, Irma Moore, and Jeanette Moore preceded her in death. Funeral Services for Carol Turner were held 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 21, 2008, at Patterson Greer Chapel in Hollis with Reverend Richard Manning officiating. Interment followed at Fairmount Cemetery in Hollis. |
| THORNBROUGH Andee Kay Thornbrough, infant daughter of Monty and Kaylee Thornbrough, passed into the arms of Jesus on Thursday evening, February 21, 2008, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Andee Kay was wanted and loved so by her parents and grandparents. Many friends and family members were also anxiously awaiting the safe arrival of her. But God had a different plan for our little Andee Kay. She has forever left immeasurable memories on the hearts of those who have already grown to love her. Andee will forever be “0ur precious little angel.” Her loving family includes her daddy and mommy, Monty and Kaylee Thornbrough of Altus; two uncles, Matt Thornbrough and Mark Thornbrough of Sayre; one aunt, Kenna Anderson of Norman; her grandparents, Kenny and Cheryl Anderson of Altus and Roy and Sandy Thornbrough of Sayre; great grandparents, Dale and Ann Lou Caid of Granite, Sarah Thornbrough and the late Leaford Thornbrough of Sayre, Karl and Vivian Klick of Oklahoma City, Bob and Jane Stephenson of Altus and Veda Anderson and the late Frank (Andy) Anderson of Altus along with many other relatives and family friends. Funeral services for Andee Kay Thornbrough will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, February 25, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Altus with Dr. Jeff Moore and Pastor David Player officiating. Interment will follow at the Sayre City Cemetery with Rev. Gary Baird officiating. Services are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus. | Eva Grider Tucker 99, of Arlington, Texas, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008, at the Green Oaks Nursing Center in Arlington. Eva was born February 5, 1905, in Quanah, Texas to T.G. and Bettie (Pope) Kearley. She married Jack Grider in 1928. To this union, a daughter, Louise Grider, was born on July 7, 1932. She died October 30, 1987. Jack preceded his wife in death June 8, 1936. Jack was killed in an accident while transporting gasoline in June of 1936. Eva later married Robert Tucker. She lived in Oklahoma City for many years. Eva attended the Council Road Baptist Church and enjoyed the senior Sunday school class. She loved to play bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs. One of Eva’s favorite phrases was “God is good and all is well.” She was a lovely lady and enjoyed giving to others. Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Altus City Cemetery with Bill Osborne officiating. Arrangements are with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
