WEDDLE

Eldorado lost one of its oldest residents on July 4, 2006, when Jewell Weddle passed away at the age of 97.  On
December 23, 1908, Julia Jewell Spencer was the eighth child born to James W. and Chimp Spencer in Wellington,
Texas.  J.W., born in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Chimp, born in Fannin County, Texas, moved to Eldorado
shortly after Jewell’s birth and spent the remainder of their lives there.  Jewell survived her 13 brothers and sisters;
Roy, born 1894, Richard, born 1896, Lillie, born 1897, Eldridge, born 1899; (died at an early age), Belle & Leither,
twins born 1901; Ola Gertrude, born 1903, Ollie, born 1910, Lora Fay and R.A. born 1912; (R.A. died at birth), R.
E., born 1913; (died as a baby), Lula Pearl, born 1914 and Bertha, born 1918.

She also survived her husband, Albert; her oldest daughter, Geneva Dawson; and two sons-in-law, Kenneth Dawson
and Tommie Hankins.  She leaves a legacy of strength and determination.

Jewell married Albert Buck Weddle in Eldorado on October 6, 1925, shortly before turning 17 and spent the next
58 years as his wife until his death on June 16, 1984.  Jewell and Albert had two daughters: Joyce Geneva, born in
1926 and Billie Berniece, born in 1929.  They lived and farmed for many years several miles east of Eldorado until
Albert’s failing health required a move into town.  They owned a home on Main Street across from the First Baptist
Church where Jewell lived after Albert’s death until her move to the Grace Living Center in Mangum in September
1999.

Although most people thought of Jewell as a farmer’s wife, she had a number of occupations that took her outside the
home.  During the 1940’s, she ran a café in Eldorado with her two daughters as waitresses; during WWII, she
moved with the family to Wichita, Kansas and worked in the aircraft industry to help with the war effort; she and her
sister, Pearl, wallpapered many homes in the area; and for many years, she was the area’s Studio Girl cosmetics
representative.  All of these occupations were in addition to her usual work at home and on the farm…Jewell was no
stranger to working in the fields, chopping and picking cotton – and always had the heaviest sack!

Jewell took pride in doing things well.. she worked hard to have a nice home and yard.  She was skilled at flower
gardening, canning, cooking… and was always working on another beautiful piece of crochet.  In fact, Jewell was
capable of accomplishing nearly anything she decided to take on.  Her strength and spirit will be missed by her many
family members and friends.  She is survived by her daughter, Billie Hankins. Granddaughters: Ann Hatcher of Austin,
TX; Shelia (Preston) Brown of Edmond, OK; Chris (David) Quisenberry of Vernon, TX; and Linda (Jerry) Blanton
of Chandler, OK.

Great-grandchildren: Cary Osborne, Shane (Tami) Osborne, T.J. Osborne, Scott (Angela) Bernard, Chad (Denise)
Bernard, Alayna Miller, and Breana (Zane) Wooden.

Great-great-grandchildren: Cameron Osborne, Kaitlyn Osborne, Harris Osborne, Brady Bernard, Regan Bernard,
Jacob Miller, and Skylar Kelly.

Jewell Weddle will lie in state at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus on Wednesday, July 5th and will lie in state at
Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel in Eldorado on Thursday.  The family will receive guest on Thursday evening
from 6:30 until 8:00 pm at the Lowell-Tims Chapel in Eldorado. Graveside services have been scheduled for 10:00
am, Friday at the Eldorado Cemetery with Rev. Dean Goodfellow officiating.  Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

Wiese
Raymond Frank Wiese (Ray), 91, of Warren, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2006, at the English Village Manor
in Altus.
Ray was born February 13, 1915, in Appleton, Wisconsin.  Ray was a veteran of World War II.  While in the
service, Ray was an Army Air Corps Staff Sergeant assigned to a bomber crew in the South Pacific.  His airplane
was shot down twice over the ocean, but both times, he lived to tell the tale.  After World War II, he was stationed
at Altus Air Force Base where he met and fell in love with Audrey Lee Goolsby.  They were married on February
28, 1945, and moved back to Appleton, Wisconsin, where they had two sons.  Ray worked at Zwicker’s Knitting
Mills for 42 years, the last 18 of which he was the Director of Personnel.  In 2001, Ray and Audrey moved back to
Oklahoma.  Since that time, they lived in Warren and were assisted by Audrey’s sisters and brothers-in-law, Vinita
and Toby Elliott, Carolyn and Clifford McElroy, and Joyce and Calvin Gipson.
Ray was an avid hunter, fisherman, canoeist, and general woodsman.  He taught his sons and grandson the ways of
the forest and the art of handling a canoe.  But Ray enjoyed working on or around his houses as much as he enjoyed
anything.  He was, to say the least, a jack-of-all-trades.  He was able to plumb or wire a house from the ground up.
He did his own roofing, laid his own cement driveway and sidewalk, and could remodel any room in the house.
Ray will be greatly mourned by his loving wife, Audrey Wiese, of the home; his sons, Terry Wiese of Altus and Jeff
Wiese and wife Margaret (Peggy) of Fitchburg, Wisconsin; a grandson, Brian Komp, a granddaughter, Laurie Notz,
and three great-grandchildren, Kyle Komp, Chloe Notz, and Elijah Notz.
Ray was preceded in death by his older brother, Allen Wiese, his younger sisters, Virginia Nosbaum and Doris
Dorshner, and his younger brother, Fred Wiese.  At the age of 91, Ray was the last of his generation to pass away.
Ray was an excellent husband and provider for Audrey, an exceptional father for Terry and Jeff, and wonderful
grandfather for Brian and Laurie.  The last few years of his life, Ray suffered from dementia, but he never forgot his
love for his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, or relatives.  Ray made the world a better
place and will be sincerely missed.

Funeral Services for Ray Wiese will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at the First Baptist Church in
Warren, Oklahoma, with Bro. Terry Colwell and Bro. Kenneth Lyles officiating.  Services are under the direction of
Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.

Hospital in Altus.
Windell was born March 30, 1940, in Hollis, Oklahoma to JD and Mary Elizabeth Vanlandingham. Growing up, he
attended Ron, Arnett, and Hollis schools, graduating from Hollis in 1958.  When he was a small boy, his mother
showed him three guitar chords, which set off a life-long love of playing the guitar.  He taught himself from there and
played at school, church, and community activities while growing up.  When he was 14, he won a contest and played
on a radio show, The Dixie Boy Jordan Show.
Windell married Barbara Shumate on July 12, 1959, in Hollis.  They made their first home in Gould.  He was
employed by C.R. Anthony in Hollis where he worked until January 1960.
The next few years took the family to several different places including Pampa, Borger, Albuquerque, Amarillo,
Clovis and Altus.  Windell held many different positions throughout the years including Brown's Truck Stop, The
Glass Shop, Gilt Edge Milk, and Sante Fe Railroad.  Tiring of moving, Windell decided to bring his family home to

he loved best...selling cars!  In 1975, he went into partnership with his brother-in-law, Loyd Colson forming C & V
Enterprises, a pre-owned car lot.  In 1977, Loyd left the business to teach school and Windell moved the business to

church board member.  He was a very important part of the music program.  He played his guitar and sang bass with
the congregational and special music with Barbara.
This past year he fulfilled one of his dreams by starting the Gospel Jubilee at the civic center in Hollis.  He poured his
heart and soul into making it happen, no matter how ill he was.  He said he always felt better when he left the jubilee.
His desire was to bring the community together for music and fellowship.
He loved his work in the car business.  He told his family many times that working was his hobby.  He also enjoyed

Bertie Marie Cook Wallace

Marie Wallace lived a long and fulfilling life until she left us in the early morning hours of October 27, 2007. Marie
was the second of seven children born of James A. Cook and Cecilia Rushing Cook. Born November 17, 1921, for
the next 11 years her life was that of any normal little girl until her father died, and she had to assume a partial parental
role for her 5 younger siblings. She graduated from Groveton High School in 1939 and finished Sam Houston State
Teacher’s college in 1942 with a degree in Business Administration and a teaching certificate. She began teaching at
the high school in China, Texas the following September. Her early teaching career lasted only one year when she
met and married Robert Wallace in June 1943. As the wife of a rice farmer, she worked as a homemaker for the next
14 years. 1957 was a momentous year. In January, her only son, John Robert, was born and in August, her husband
Robert died of a massive heart attack.
She ran the rice farm until 1967 when she was recruited back into teaching at China Elementary School. She was
persuaded the following year to begin her first major adventure. Her sister was stationed with her husband at
Andersen Air Force base in Guam. She discovered a great teaching opportunity for Marie in Guam. So, in 1968,
Marie moved to Guam, an island in the middle of the Pacific. Living on a tropical island, and traveling through the
Pacific, allowed her to indulge in her passion for flowers. She served there for two years before returning to Texas in
1970. She resumed her teaching career in Beaumont Texas where she worked until retirement in 1989. Not yet
ready to completely retire, she served as a missionary teacher for the next three years in American Samoa.
Complications due to diabetes forced her into permanent retirement in 1992.
Her missionary service was the culmination of a long life of service to her church. She served as GA director,
Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible school superintendent, and choir director. She was in church whenever the
doors were open whether it be Sunday morning or evening, Wednesday night, revivals, or any other church activity.
This devotion to the church extended to wherever she lived ending with the First Baptist Church in Altus. As an
extension of her devotion to God, Marie served as a “second” mother to several children around the world.
She was limited during her last years by the physical manifestations of diabetes. She lost parts of both legs, and
her eyesight was severely limited. She never lost her concern for her church or for others around her. She spent her
last years at Plantation Village Assisted living center and nursing home. During this time she blessed those around her
by visiting with the other residents daily and serving as their voice with the administration as a member of the resident
council. She attended church each Sunday when possible up to the last week of her life.
She is preceded in death by her brothers William L. Cook and William Alfred ”Fred” Cook and one sister
Pauline Cook.  She is survived by her son, John Wallace and his wife, Candace, of Tujunga, CA., one grandson,
three great grandchildren, and sisters Cecilia Miller and her husband Walter H. Miller of Altus, Margie Billings of
Nacogdoches, TX, and one brother James H. Cook and his wife Nelda of Arlington, VA. She also leaves behind
numerous nieces and nephews, including Mindy Smiley and her family of Altus, Jean Marie Meacham and her family,
also of Altus, and a number of “adopted” kids. In addition, she is survived by numerous step brothers and sisters
from the marriage of her mother to R. L. Browning after the death of her father.  Marie served as an example of love,
generosity and kindness to all who knew her.

The family will receive friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home 6:00 to 8:00 pm Monday, Oct. 29.  Funeral Services
for Marie Wallace will be held 2:00 pm, Tuesday, October 30, at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore
