Velma   Abernathy



Velma Abernathy was born Oct. 30, 1910 at Carlsbad, New Mexico.  She was the daughter of the late Charles O. and
Lilly (Rogers) Abernathy.  She died Nov. 23, 2003 in Altus.  

Velma grew in the Ozark Community where she graduated from Ozark High School.  She was a member of the 1st
Baptist Church of Altus where she taught a Sunday School Class.  She worked at the County Court House for many
years where she was a Secretary.  She also worked for the Bill Luderson Agency and for Gregg Buck and Roberson
Agency.  She was an original member of the ABWA.

Survivors include:

And a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, Raymond, Dan, & Roger Abernathy and 3 sisters, Mae Gates,
Freda Holloway, and Mildred Rowlett.

Services for Velma Abernathy are scheduled for 10 AM Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home
with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating.  Interment will follow at the Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral
Home.
Marchal Acosta


Marchal Acosta, age 80 of Altus, passed away May 12, 2003 at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital.  Services
are set for Thursday, May 15, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel.  The Rev. Joe Tovar will
officiate and burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery.  Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M., there will be a memorial
service at the funeral home.
Marchal was born July 5, 1922 at Powell, Texas to parents Marcos and Candida Acosta.  In 1945, Marchal went into
the United States Army.  He was very proud of his military service.  Marchal was united in marriage to Mary Barron at
Waxahachie, Texas on June 2, 1951.  In 1956, the family moved to the Altus area, where Marchal went to work as a
foreman for Leger Mills and then Mayflower Van Lines.  Marchal was a member of the Templo Sinai Spanish
Assembly of God Church.  He enjoyed visiting churches of all denominations and was a gifted musician.  Marchal also
loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Marchal was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and two sisters.  He is survived by his wife, Mary of the
home; six grandchildren, Julia and husband Tomas Revilla of Altus, Marchal Acosta Jr. of Altus, Irene Sanchez and
husband Raymundo of Altus, Ray Acosta of Altus, Mary Dela Rosa of Dallas, Texas, Amelia Biddlecom of Altus;
brothers, Ernest Acosta of Long Beach, California, Marcus Acosta of Fort Worth, Texas, Fermin Acosta of Long
Beach, California; sisters, Louise Ruiz of Fort Worth, Texas, Mary Mitchel of Denver, Colorado, Virginia Sandla of
San Pedro, California; fifteen grandchildren; eighteen grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.  
Herman R. Adams

Herman R. Adams, age 90 of Altus, passed away August 16, 2003.  Services are set for 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August
19, 2003 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel.  The Rev. Richard Ventonis will officiate with Captain Ernest Hull
assisting.  Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery.  The family will receive guests at the funeral home on
Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M.
Herman was born August 22, 1912 at Royce City, Texas to parents John Thomas Adams and Laura Pearl Parks
Adams.  He was united in marriage to Beedie Estelle Agin on July 29, 1933 at Elmer, Oklahoma. They enjoyed many
years of marriage.  In the 1950’s, Herman moved the family to Phoenix, Arizona where he went to work as a school
custodian for the public school system.  He lived and worked in Phoenix for 21 years before returning to the Altus area
in 1978.  In retirement, Herman enjoyed playing Dominoes, working in the yard and watching wrestling.  He was a
member of the First Assembly of God in Altus.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beedie in 1985; two children, Herman Adams Jr. in 1938 and Joyce Laverne
Adams in 1949; and two sisters, Edna Mae Graham and Francis Ballew.  Herman is survived by two sisters, Don Nell
Graves and husband Wayne of Altus and Cloerene McKelvy and husband Lloyd of Altus; nieces, Linda Smith, Becky
Vigil and Carol Frank; nephews, Tommy Graham, Gene Graham, Johnny Cox, James Cox, Billy Cox and numerous
other great nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.  
Zane Ellen Adams

Zane Ellen Adams, age 60 of Altus, passed away May 24, 2003.  Memorial Services are scheduled for Tuesday, May
27, 2003, 10:00 a. m.                       at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Haynes Dugan and Rev. Dick
Rosenbaum officiating.  Lowell-Tims Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Zane was born April 1, 1943 in Altus, Oklahoma to parents William “Edward” Adams and Rosa Mae Adams.  She
graduated from Altus High School in 1961.  Following graduation, she attended business school in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma.  
She married Donald Hansen in 1962 and lived in Oklahoma City until 1975 when she moved to New Orleans,
Louisiana.  Zane returned to Altus in 1984.  She worked for the Wilmes Superstore for twenty years, where she was
Office manager.  
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church was a very important part of her life. She was active in many different capacities in her
church including President of the Daughters of the King, member of the Vestry, as well as, a Vestry Clerk and member
of the Episcopal Church Women.  Additionally, she was a member of the choir and the Alter Guild. She also served as
a Lay Eucharistic Minister.  Zane tutored for the Great Plains Literacy Council. She also enjoyed her weekly bridge
game and sewing.
Zane was preceded in death by her father, William “Ed” Adams and one son, Donald Hansen, who passed away in
1991.  She is survived by her mother, Rosa Adams of Altus; two children, Aaron Hansen and wife Celia of
Leavenworth, Kansas and Kathy Davis of Altus; a brother, Gary Adams and wife Ethelene of Houston, Texas; a
sister, Janis McSwain and husband Rick of Morrison, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Aubrey Hansen, Lonnie Hansen,
Jacob Hansen, Miles Davis, Kelsey Davis; daughter in law, YunOk Hansen; two nephews, Shane Adams of Houston,
Texas, David McSwain of Stillwater, Oklahoma, a niece, Kim Hansen of Edmond, Oklahoma and a host of other
relatives and friends.  The family has asked that memorials be made to the Alter Guild at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
JoAnn Hancock Allen

JoAnn Hancock Allen age 44, passed away Friday May 14, 2004 at her home in Henderson, Tennessee, JoAnn was
a Juvenile Probation Officier with the Department of Human Services State of Tennessee.
JoAnn was born in Corinth, MS the daughter of Doyes Davis Hancock and the late George Monroe Hancock.  She
went to schools in Corinth, attended Western Oklahoma State College, and graduated form Lambuth University in
Jackson with majors in Psychology and Sociology.  She also had received her teacher’s certification form the State of
Tennessee.
She married Michael Wayne Allen in 1976 and they made their home in Altus, Oklahoma until 1988 when they moved
to Henderson, then to Jackson, and back to Henderson.  She worked with Quinco Mental Health for four years and
then with the Department of Human Services as a child abuse investigator and has also done volunteer work with the
Foster Care Program.  She had worked the past four years as a Juvenile Probation Officer with the Department of
Human Services in Chester and surrounding counties.
JoAnn’s son and son-in-law are both involved in the ministry, which made her very proud.  She loved her children and
was a “people person”, spending all of her life living for God and others.  She was member of the Lighthouse United
Pentecostal Church in Jackson.
She is also survived by her husband Mike Allen of Henderson, a son Jeremy Michael Allen and wife Melissa of New
Albany, MS and a daughter Maranda Mize and husband Brandon of West Memphis, ARK.
She is also survived by her mother Doyes Davis Hancock; two brothers Larry Hancock and Jimmy Hancock and a
sister Sandy Hughes all of Corinth, MS
Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 27,2004 at 11:00am at the Altus City Cemetery.
                                  John Ashley

John Ashley, age 59, of Altus, OK passed away Sunday, May 11, 2003 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.  
Services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm,  Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Olustee.  
Reverend Doug Altom will officiate with interment following in the Olustee Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-
Tims Funeral Home.  The family of John Ashley will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening May13,
2003 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

John was born November 21, 1943 in Olustee, OK to Fred Ashley and Margaret (Simmons) Ashley.  He lived and
attended school in Olustee for  many years. He joined the United States Army where he served for two years before
being honorably discharged. On August 13, 1971, John and Susie Pfaff were united in marriage at Wellington, Texas.   
John was the owner and operator of Movieland Video in Mangum.  He also farmed and raised cattle in this area.  John
was very involved with the youth.  He sponsored the Mangum Football Team, and his nephews at Altus Speedway for
several years, and was known in the area as “Uncle Johnny.”   John’s favorite pastime was rebuilding his 1982 S10
Pickup.  John was totally devoted to his family and was always ready with a story allowing him to brag on his ‘kids’.  
John was affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Olustee and with anything involving children.

John was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Robin Diane Boyd; and one brother, Lloyd Ervin Ashley.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Susie Ashley of the home in Altus; by two sons, Christopher Shawn Ashley and
John Robert Ashley, Jr., both of Tononopah, Arizona; two daughters, Sherri Leigh Bergan, also of Tononopah,
Arizona, and Kathy Harper and her husband, Chris of Mangum, Oklahoma; three sisters, Freda Lou Ashley of Altus,
Oklahoma, Jaynelle Cash and husband, Ed of Oklahoma City, and Jo Ellen Williams of Bradenton, Florida; 8
grandchildren;special friends, Bob and Shirley Petkoff and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many
friends.
Freda Lou Ashley


Freda Lou Ashley, age 72 of Altus, passed away December 31, 2003 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Services, under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus, are set for 2:00 P.M. on Monday, January 5,
2004 at the First Baptist Church of Olustee. The Rev. Doug Altom will officiate and interment will follow at the
Olustee City Cemetery.

Lou was born at Olustee, Oklahoma on February 14, 1931 to parents William Frederick Ashley and Margaret Lee
Simmons Ashley. Freda was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and had lived at the English Village Nursing Home
for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and Lloyd Ashley. Lou is survived by her two
sisters, Jaynelle and husband Ed Cash of Oklahoma City and Jo Ellen Williams of Bradenton, Florida; sister in law,
Susie Ashley of Altus; aunts, Oleta Robertson of Olustee and Gwen and Alex Swain of Olustee and numerous nieces,
nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Nolan Harold Ayers


Nolan Harold Ayers, age 68, of Roosevelt died at the Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma Saturday, November 22,
2003. Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Roosevelt Cemetery officiated by Rev. Jean Law.
Arrangements are with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Mr. Ayers will lie in state at Hackney-Gish Funeral Home in Hobart
until service time.

Nolan was born February 14, 1935 in the Consolidated-8 community near Roosevelt, Oklahoma and was the son of A.D.
(Bud) and Nettie Glee Ayers. He married Julia Ann Law June 17, 1960 in Roosevelt. He was a construction Foreman at
Alltel for 34 years before retiring in 1993. Nolan served in the United States Army as well as the Army Reserve.

Survivors include his wife: Julia of the home. One (1) son: Neal Ayers and his wife Kristi of Dill City, OK. One (1)
daughter: Sherry Downen and her husband Jerry of Rossevelt. Two (2) sisters: Carol Hunn and her husband Jake of
Hobart. Charlene Maxwell and her husband Bill of Midwest City, OK. Six (6) grandchildren survive Kyle, Laira, Jordan,
Lindsay, Jennifer and Jerry Lynn. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dawayne and Bill.

In liu of flowers the family request donations be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Alzheimer’s Division.
