| Maria Nieves Sarabia Maria Nieves Sarabia went to be with her lord on Sunday, January 4,2004 at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was born August 4, 1940 in Hondo, Texas to Cecil and Senona (Lara) Sarabia. Maria had lived in the Altus and Jackson County area since 1958. Maria worked for over twenty years as a cook at the Eldorado Public Schools until she retired. She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Altus. After retirement Maria enjoyed spending time with her daughter and granddaughter. They especially enjoyed going to the movies and shopping. Maria passed her love and knowledge of crocheting and sewing to her granddaughter as well. She will be loved and missed as the wonderful mother and grandmother that she was. She was preceded in death by her mother, Senona Sanchez in 1984; her father Cecil Sarabia in 1993; her step-father, Jose Sanches, Sr. in 1994; two grandsons, Jonathan Paul Sarabia in 1990 and Thomas Lynn Sarabia in 1994. Maria is lovingly survived by a daughter, Rachel Lorene Sarabia of Altus, Oklahoma; a granddaughter, Gina Sarabia of Altus; two brothers, Paul Sanchez and Jose Sanchez and wife, Angie, of Altus; two sisters, Anita Armstrong and husband, Mike,of Altus; and Maria Greshay and husband, Jim of Virginia; and by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm, Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. C.W. Parker and Rev. Boyd Whitehead officiating. | John Emmett Sellers John Emmett Sellers, age 86, of Altus, Oklahoma, died Tuesday morning, June 8, 2004, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Services have been scheduled for 2:00 pm Thursday, June 10th at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Mr. Sellers’ brother-in-law, Reverend Clyde Berkley, will be assisting with the funeral services in Altus and will conduct the graveside services in Hamilton, Texas. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Texas Friday morning at 10:00 am. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Mr. Sellers was born January 26, 1918, the son of Joel Neel Sellers and Ella Lee (Bankston) Sellers in Jonesboro, Texas. He was married to Wanda Dean Berkley June 6, 1947 at Robert Lee, Texas. Mr. Sellers was a World War II Army Veteran. He served in the European Theater in the D-Day Invasion and Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded and was given a Medical Discharge at McClosky Hospital in Temple, Texas on October 4, 1945. He lived around Hamilton, Texas and had “The Wagon Wheel Café” there after his discharge. John moved his family to Altus, Oklahoma in 1959 where he owned and operated a furniture upholstery shop for many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Altus, a lifetime member of the DAV, and a past member of the Optimist Club. John was a family man who worked very hard to provide for them. He was also a good Christian man who was looking forward to Heaven. He was preceded in death by his father, Joel Neel Sellers; his mother, Ella Lee Sellers Neal; step-father, Boyd Neal; two brothers, Lee Neal Sellers and Jerry Audine Neal; a step-brother, William Neal; and a nephew, Gary Sellers. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 57 years, Wanda of the home in Altus; two daughters and a son-in-law, Connie Parks of Edmond, Oklahoma and Gayle and Bill Meyer of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one brother, Leonard Sellers and wife, Judy, of Abilene, Texas; a sister, Estelle Michael of Wylie, Texas; four grandchildren, Heather Marie Parks Seabourn and husband Don, Ashley Michelle Parks, Steven Higgs and wife Dorothy, and Ryan Higgs and wife Miranda; one great-grandchild, Jacob “Jake” Higgs; also survived by brother-in-law Clyde Berkley and wife Ann, sister-in-law Christine Garcia and husband Jess, sister-in-law Dortha Everitt and husband Jim along with many nieces and nephews. |

| Jearld (Jerry) Roy Simmons Jearld (Jerry) Roy Simmons went to be with the Lord on May 1, 2004. Born June 5, 1938 in Princeton, IN to Hazel Pauley Simmons and Herschel Roy Simmons, he had no brothers or sisters. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1957. While in school he played in the band and often talked of the year the band marched and played at Mardi Gras in Louisiana. As a child and young adult he was active in the Nazarene Church. Jerry is survived by his wife Alene, one son Jason R. Simmons of Oklahoma City, one daughter, Joy R. Finch and her family, husband Jason L. Finch and their children Cheyanne R. Finch, Kaycee L. Finch, and Kayla C. Hill all of Charleston, SC; also, his step brother and his wife David & Marilyn Niehaus, and their family, Andy, Greta, and Matt, all of Bellvue, WA. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, father, and step-father Leonard (Jack) Niehaus. After 2 years of college in Evansville, IN, Jerry joined the Air Force in 1959 retiring in 1984. He was stationed in Blytheville AFB, AR, Eglin AFB, FL, Ellsworth AFB, SD, Kadena AFB, Okinawa, and Altus AFB, OK. He met his wife, Alene, while stationed at Blytheville, AR. They were married March 31, 1963 at Beacon Baptist Church. He was an avid model railroader, he helped establish the model railroad club at Ft. Buckner Okinawa and was very proud of his HO gauge collection. He was a member of Headrick Baptist Church and was music director for several years. Upon retirement from the Air Force he worked on a construction crew for the railroad and also was proud of the fact that he help turn highway 62 into a 4 lane highway. He drove the school bus for Navajo School District and the activity bus for WOSC for several years. He was part owner and technician for D&J’s Computer Hospital. Jerry was very concerned for the town of Headrick. During the 30 years he lived there he was a volunteer fireman, read the water meters, acted on the town council and served as both the town clerk and mayor. He was a Mason and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Funeral Services for Jerry Simmons are scheduled for Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 3:00 P.M. in the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. | Kay Duke Shirley Kay Duke Shirley, 51, of Oklahoma City, passed away at her residence Monday, August 23. Kay was born February 2, 1953, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Eugene and Susie (Miller) Welch. She married Jerry Duke February 19, 1971, in Altus and he preceded her in death August 25, 2003. Kay married Sid Shirley March 19, 2004 in Norman, Oklahoma. Kay was a very dedicated wife and mother and loved working with children. She attended WOSC in Altus where she earned an Associate’s Degree and continued her education in Weatherford where she earned her B.A. in education. She taught school for a short time before turning her career in another direction. She obtained a business degree at the University of North Texas in Denton. She later went to nursing school where she earned her LPN license. She was just getting ready to enroll in RN school when she was diagnosed with cancer. She worked at the OU Health Sciences Center for a pediatric neurosurgeon and was loved by her young patients. | Thelma Frances Shumaker Thelma Frances Shumaker, age 91, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2004, at Grace Living Center in Altus, Oklahoma. Thelma was born November 10, 1912 in Eldorado, Oklahoma, to Frank and Kate Easley and graduated from Midway High School. Thelma married Dillon H. Shumaker Jan 14, 1936 in Altus, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death June 20, 1967. Thelma was a member of the Eldorado Church of the Nazarene and the Eldorado Historical Society. She enjoyed traveling, quilting, painting, music and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents and husband Dillon. | Martha Jean Simon Martha Jean Simon, 84, Altus, Oklahoma, formerly of Oklahoma City, passed away Saturday, October 23, 2004, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus. A celebration of her life will be held at 11am Wednesday, October 27, 2004, in the Hahn-Cook Street & Draper Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Martha Jean Swickey was born to Margaret and Charles Arthur Swickey on November 10, 1919, in Smithton, Pennsylvania. She moved to Colgate, Oklahoma, in 1928 and after high school graduation, Martha attended Hills Business College in Oklahoma City. Matha met Richard Simon, they married, and raised four children, Margearet Ann Worrell, Nancy Carol Hill, Richard R. Simon and Danny Carl Simon. For many years, Richard and Martha owned and operated Simon’s Men & Boy’s Wear in Oklahoma City. Matha was a member of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church where she was head of the worship committee for several years and always baked a special bread for communion. Martha enjoyed sewing, cooking, playing bridge, reading, working crossword puzzles, walking and visiting with neighbors. Her family was always her main priority. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard of 59 years, and her beloved brother, Melvin Swickey. | Minnie Mae Smith Minnie Mae Smith, age 93 of Upland, California, passed away January 3, 2004. Graveside services, under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus, are set for 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Hobart Rose Cemetery. The Rev. Doran Myers will officiate, Minnie Mae was born on March 10, 1910 at Vernon, Texas to parents John Calvin Scurlock and Mollie Thompson Scurlock. After completing her education, she was united in marriage to Willard Smith. They enjoyed many years of marriage and he preceded her in death in 1961. Minnie Mae and Willard were both longtime residents of the Hobart community and worked at the Hobart Public Schools. After Willard’s death, Minnie Mae took an administrative position at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. She worked there until moving to California in the 1970’s. She was also a talented artist, painting many pieces of China and enjoyed dancing. Minnie Mae is survived by two children, Jerry Smith and Molly Sue Scorsatto, both of California and many other relatives and friends. |

| Ray Webster Southern Ray Webster Southern, age 79, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2004 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Ray was born January 17, 1925 in Altus, Oklahoma. He was the son of the late Daniel Webster Southern and Leona Southern Pierce. Ray was a lifelong resident of Altus and Jackson County. He graduated from Ozark High School. In 1943 after graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp 4th Marine Division. He was wounded in 1944 while fighting in the Asiatic Pacific Area, at Saipan. He was honorably discharged from the USMC, and received the Purple Heart, from wounds received during combat. Ray was a long time and active member of the Elm and Hudson Church of Christ. He was an active participant with the Red Cross Blood Drive, NARFE, the American Legion, VFW, Lions Club, and retired as Postmaster from the Altus Postal Service. She was born October 22, 1927 in Gilliam, Arkansas to Forrest and Rosie (Martin) Angel. On April 26, 1952, Minnie married Stanley Speraw at Texarkana, Arkansas. She is lovingly survived by her husband Stanley Speraw of the home in Altus, Oklahoma; two sons, James Speraw and wife Debbie of Ft. | Opal Spradlin Opal Spradlin, age 86 of Altus, passed away June 2, 2003 at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services are set for 10:00 A.M. Thursday, June 5, 2003 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Jeff Moore will officiate and interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery. The family will receive guests at the funeral home from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday evening. Opal was born on October 6, 1916 to parents Robert Ledbetter and Dora Powers Ledbetter six miles south of Altus. She married Woodrow Wilson Spradlin on February 3, 1934 at Duke, Oklahoma. They made their home in Altus. Together they raised six children, and they were married sixty years. She worked on farms and at several restaurants in Altus. During World War II she lived in California, and she was a ship welder. Her hobbies included playing Dominoes at Wilson Center and charity work. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends ,and she was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Altus. She was a very warm and loving person and cared for all. She never knew a stranger, and her front door was always open. If you were fortunate enough to have known her and had been to her home, you knew to come hungry, because you were sure to leave with a full stomach. She was loved by all who knew her. She will be remembered fondly and greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Spradlin, her parents, Robert and Dora Ledbetter; three brothers, Lloyd Ledbetter, Leo Ledbetter and Leon Ledbetter; three sisters, Ruby Ledbetter, Hope Solee and Myrtle Rose; granddaughter, Terri Bryer and great granddaughter Leigh Ann Longoria. Survivors include her children, Bonnie Ford, Jerry Spradlin, Jimmie Spradlin and Sandra Shaw, all of Altus; Beverly Darcy of Glen Burrey, Maryland and Veda Eiler of Fort Worth, Texas; twenty four grandchildren, forty five great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; her best friend, midnight the dog and a host of other relatives and friends. |

| Beatrice Eurice Starkey Beatrice Eurice Starkey age 100, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2004 in Altus, Oklahoma. She was born March 6, 1903 in Martha, Oklahoma to William Pierce Collier and Laura Maude (Teague) Collier. She was a graduate of Martha High School. Her family moved to Hale Center, Texas and she lived there until she married Ivan Lee (Doc) Starkey on July 12, 1925. He preceded her in death on August 28, 1958. They owned and operated the Altus Bakery for twenty-five years, they also operated a motel in Williams, Arizona. After Doc’s death she moved back to Martha and lived with her aunt and uncle, Bud and Carrie Mae Ray. Beatrice worked for Maffrey Travel Agency for awhile. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hale Center, Texas. She is survived by three nieces, Margaret Faith of Hale Center, Texas, Faye Traxler of Tuttle, Oklahoma and Joy McClure of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two nephews, Dale Johnson of Washington, and Gene Collier of Duncan, Oklahoma; and a very large extended family she loved so much. Although she had no children she was a mother, grandmother, and friend to many. | Jessie Lee Steen Jessie Lee Steen, age 87, went to be with the lord on Friday, May 21, 2004 after a lengthy illness. Jessie was born in Hugo, Oklahoma, February 9, 1917, to Jake and Lucille (Crosby) Collins. She graduated from Fort Towson High School in 1936. She graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1946 with an elementary education degree. At Southeastern she was voted Top Ten Prettiest and Best Dressed of her graduating class. On April 11, 1945 she married Fred Steen in Broken Bow. She taught school in Cedar Springs, Fort Towson and Broken Bow until she and Fred moved to Jackson County in 1952. She then taught school in Altus for one year at Eugene Field Elementary. She then taught fourth grade in Blair Schools until her retirement in 1975. During this time she also helped her husband to establish Peoples State Bank of Blair and worked with him until his death in 1976. Jessie was a member of Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma and Retired Teachers Association she loved OU football, especially the OU-Texas games and had season tickets for a number of years. But her biggest source of pride was her two granddaughters, Melissa and Meagan. She was preceded in death by parents, her husband Fred and her brother James (Buddy) Collins. She is survived by her son, Rick Steen and his wife Carol of Altus, two granddaughters, Melissa and Meagan Steen of Altus, one sister, Jewell Russell of Hugo, one niece, Linda Irvin of Hugo, three nephews, Jeff and Randy Collins of Hugo, and Bobby Russell of Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in Jessie Steen’s name to the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or the charity of their choice. Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at the First United Pentecostal Church of Altus. Rev. Lionel Mounce will officiate and interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery. Adrian is survived by his parents, Carl and Donna Steiner of Altus; two brothers, Ethan and Ryan Steiner; one sister, Marisa Cantu and grandmother, Marie Herrera as well as his extended church family. |

| Mildred Sumrow, Mildred Sumrow, a long time Altus resident, passed away at Grace Living Center Wednesday, May 12, 2004. Mildred was born to Minnie and Doss Myers on July 25, 1917 in Dallas, Texas. Mildred married William Elbert Sumrow on December 2, 1946 in Dallas, Texas and later moved to the Altus area. Mrs. Sumrow was a beautician for several years after attending beauty school and retired at an early age due to health. Mrs. Sumrow was preceded in death by her parents and husband of forty-two years. She is survived by a nephew, Steve Myers, of Texas; a cousin, Erma Hadaway, of Runaway Bay, Texas and a host of friends. Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2004 at Altus City Cemetery with Bill Osborne officiating. Arrangements are with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. |
