Obituary for Johnnie B Flowers


Johnnie Flowers, a longtime resident of Altus, Oklahoma, laid down his working tools and joined the Supreme Architect on January 28, 2024 in Plano, Texas at the age of eighty.

Johnnie was born on May 5, 1943, in Indianola, Mississippi to Leon Hubbard and Estelle (Flowers) Hubbard. He moved with his family from Mississippi to Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended Bloom Junior High, eventually graduating from Central High School. After finishing his schooling, Johnnie enlisted into the United States Air Force on July 21, 1961. His twenty year long career in the Air Force took him all over, including Vandenberg, California, Thailand, England, Langley, Germany, McGuire, Alaska, England again, Eureka, California, with his final duty assignment being at Altus Air Force Base. He also served in the Vietnam war. He retired July 21, 1981, as a Senior master sergeant. After being retired for only six months, Johnnie started his second career, also serving his country in civil service at Altus Air Force base as a firefighter, where he was quickly promoted to assistant chief. In 2002 Johnnie retired from civil service with forty-two years cumulative service to this great country.

Johnnie enjoyed fishing, he loved to spend a nice quiet day out on the water. He was also a member of many organizations. He was a part of the Lions Club, numerous Masonic Bodies, and Scottish Right. Johnnie was always the first to volunteer wherever he was needed. He was an incredible teacher who gladly gave his time to mentor young men in not only the craft but also in life. Johnnie leaves a legacy of love and devotion to his family, his brothers, and his country.

Johnnie is preceded in death by his parents, Leon Hubbard and Estelle (Flowers) Hubbard; brother, Leon Hubbard, Jr.; sister, Catherine Gray; and grandchild, Sean Patrick.

Left to honor his legacy include his spouse Sandra Flowers; sons Johnnie B. Flowers II and wife Lorrie of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bruce Flowers of Houston, Texas, Brian L. Flowers and wife Christy of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter Carla M. Grant and husband Ricky of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother Eugene Hubbard and wife Barbara; grandchildren Donissa Flowers, Johnnie B. Flowers III, Cassandra Flowers, Maya Hayes, Jerimiah Flowers, and Zuri Edmonson; great-grandchildren Melody Flowers, Bryson Greene; family friends Beverly, Roxane, Sandy, and Oscar Commings; Mike Knight and Guy Knight, Melvin and Linda Winston, Red Erickson and husband Stewart, Robert McGuire, Ray Balderas, Teresa Bland, and a host of friends, nieces, nephews.
