Obituary for Mary Joan Callen



Mary Joan Callen, 81, longtime resident of Altus and formerly of Erick, Oklahoma, passed away June 24, 2018 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

Joan was born on March 22, 1937 in Fayetteville, Arkansas to her parents Charles Isaac Shirley and Lola Mae (Pullum) Shirley. Joan worked as a hair stylist for more than 50 years and she always enjoyed taking care of her friends and customers. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church where Joan loved serving in the kitchen where she was an amazing cook. She also enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and even though Joan's cooking was better, she enjoyed going out for dinner with all of her family and friends and she always treasured the time spent with her family and friends.

Preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Lamoine Callen and Bud Roach; her daughter, Sandra Callen; six brothers, Leon Shirley; Calvin Shirley; Trues Shirley; Charles Shirley; Howard Shirley; and Earl Shirley; three sisters, Edith (Shirley) Donahue; Juanell (Shirley) Chrosby; and Betty (Shirley) Nutt;

Joan is survived by her two sons, Kenneth and Mary Waller of Payette, Idaho; and Terry and Annette Callen of Elk City, Oklahoma; her; seven grandchildren, Justin and Tiffany Bailey of Pratt, Kansas; Jaclyn Callen of Mangum, Oklahoma; Lechuga of Altus, Oklahoma; Helen Dobbs Sutton of Dallas, Texas; Shasta Waltner and husband Cole of Columbus, Montana; Candice Kirouac and husband Todd of Altus, Oklahoma; and Randall Taylor of Oregon; fourteen great grandchildren, Karsyn and Emerson Bailey of Pratt, Kansas; Jayli Kendall and J.J. Kendall of Mangum, Oklahoma; Andrew Lechuga and Brooke Lechuga of Altus, Oklahoma; Sebastian Roman and Troy Roman of Dallas, Texas; Kimber, Zoey, and Delaney Kolle of Columbus, Montana; Ryker Kirouac of Altus, Oklahoma; Corey Taylor of Sherman, Texas; and Ashley Taylor of Beavercreek, Oregon; three great great grandchildren, Trey, Jacob, and Ezekiel; her special nieces, Paulette Peterson and husband Brian; Betty Ann Puckette and husband Charlie; Candy Craig and husband Chaise; her best friend who she loved dearly as her own sister for over 5o years, Orenta Thompson; as well as many nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.

The family will greet friends at visitation from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Tuesday evening, June 26, 2018 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel in Altus.

Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus.
