Obituary for Alga A. Hitchcock

Alga Motychak Hitchcock was born on September 9th, 1928, to Theodore and Rhoda Peeks Motychak as the 5th of five children in Watauga, Tennessee. She graduated from Elizabethton High School and earned her own column in the city newspaper. She attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. While in school, she became the associate editor of the Orange and Blue and began the school's Baptist Student Union news. During the summers of her school years, she did mission work. Her trips took her to various locations, starting first in children's camps and rural mountain missions, and later to places such as Louisiana, Oregon, Washington, and Canada. She became a staff member of the Northwest Baptist Convention, leading conferences in childhood Christian education. She frequently wrote articles for Southern Baptist periodicals such as Home Life, The Sunday School Builder, and Sunday School Board (now Lifeway). She led training conferences at Glorieta, New Mexico, and led Baptist Conventions throughout the South.
In 1957, she moved to Oklahoma and became the Director of Childhood Christian Education. In 1970, she married Thurman Hitchcock, who was the Minister of Education at First Baptist Church in Altus. She became the coordinator of Adult Sunday School and began to lead conferences for the Sunday School Board in that field. Alga has always been a praying person, and the Hitchcock's wanted to establish an Intercessory Prayer Ministry in the church. When Truman died in 1982, Pastor Keith Wiginton asked her to begin the ministry. She was the coordinator for many years before retiring in 2014. She wrote training materials and helped establish church prayer ministries across the United States and Canada. Alga has led many family members, including her Great-Granddaughter Taylor and three grandsons, to Christ. The Lord's message flowed through Alga as she went on mission trips in Africa.
Alga is preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Rhoda, Brothers Howard and William, Sisters Para and Ruth, Husband Thurman, and Great-Granddaughter Taylor.
Alga is survived by a Son, John Hitchcock of Kansas City, Missouri, Grandsons Richard Hitchcock of Altus, Andrew Hitchcock of Tampa, Florida, and Timothy Hitchcock of Kansas City, Missouri, and Great-Grandson Clayton Korsmeyer of Tampa, Florida.
When asked, Alga said she tried to always be obedient to God's leading and to be grateful. He used her for his glory.
"But we do not want you be uniformed brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so through Jesus, God will bring with those who has died"
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
