Obituary for Alvin Cecil Chaney
Alvin Chaney a longtime resident of Altus, Oklahoma passed away Saturday, September 28th, 2019 in Oklahoma City at the age of 100 years, 9 months, and 7 days.

Alvin Cecil Chaney was born on December 21, 1918 in Anderson, Missouri to Sterling Edgar Chaney and Anna Elizabeth Halling. Alvin grew up in Anderson with his older brother and three younger sisters. He attended Anderson high school with his older brother Leon and actor Dabbs Greer (Little House On the Prairie and The Green Mile). He farmed with his family until 1942. Alvin volunteered for duty in 1942 like his older brother Leon. He trained with the Army Air Corp in Texas and Colorado before joining his B-29 bomber crew in San Francisco and to Hawaii in 1945. He and his crew flew their B-29 to Guam and Tinian Island in August of 1945. His aircrew participated in the formal surrender of Japan September 2, 1945. Returning from war, Alvin used the GI bill to attend college graduating from OSU in the spring of 1950. He then married Marian Francis Kitterman on June 1, 1950 and they have enjoyed over 69 years of marriage together. He then taught FFA till 1953 in Nebraska. Returning to Oklahoma, he worked as a cabinetmaker in OKC until 1954. Teaching FFA in Verden, OK till 1955. From 1955 to 1957 he taught in Chattanooga, OK. By October of 1957, he and his family moved to Altus. Alvin opened the Apco station on east Broadway until 1965. He then bought into Collins Auto Supply in 1965. He remained active in Air Force reserve until 1978 at the rank of Major. Retiring in 1986, he continued to be active with building grandfather clocks, remodeling, and mechanical projects. Alvin was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Altus where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday school, the Gideon Outreach program, and he always enjoyed singing in the church choir. Alvin always stayed active by helping other people, fixing things (Alvin could fix anything), woodworking and playing dominoes. Most of all Alvin loved his family and friends and he will be missed very much.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Leon Chaney; four sisters, Edith Marie Chaney; Dorothy Raney; Doris Dorothy; and Edna Mae Perry; daughter-in-law, Jill Marie Chaney.

Alvin is survived by his wife Marian Chaney; his two sons, Alan Chaney of Altus; and Mark Chaney and wife Catherine of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Brian Chaney and wife Lisa of Altus; Deborah Chaney of Altus; Rebekah Glaab and husband Chris of Wichita, Kansas; and Heather Hood and husband Nick of Altus; two great grandchildren, Charles Chaney and T.J. Hood; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many other family members and friends.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel in Altus with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating.
