Obituary for Barbara Smith
Barbara (Vernon) Smith was born July 19, 1932 in Blair, Oklahoma to Winnifred (Martin) Vernon and George B. Vernon. She started grade school in Altus and grew up in Southwest Oklahoma graduating from high school in Elk City in 1950. She graduated from Oklahoma A&M in 1954 with a degree in Vocational Home Economics. At that time she went to work for Oklahoma A&M Extension Service, working one year in Pauls Valley as Assistant Home Demonstration Agent. In 1955 she married Gerald Smith. She then transferred with Extension to become the Assistant Home Demonstration Agent for Jackson County and later became Home Demonstration Agent. After 6 1/2 years in that position she retired to start raising her family - a daughter Melissa Ann and son Mikel Scott. She returned to work for two years as Director of a special program through O.S.U. Extension working with low-income families in Jackson, Harmon, and Greer Counties. In 1983 Bill Austin and Gerald Smith opened Lady Austin's with Barbara as manager and buyer. After working there for 13 years the store was sold when Bill Austin and Gerald retired in 1996.
Barbara joined Aldonian in 1966 and has remained an active member for 57 years holding various offices including President. She is also a member of Chapter CM of PEO and a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church. One of the things she enjoyed most was the close friendships she had with those in her coffee group which was started in 1992. She and Gerald also enjoyed traveling with their circle of friends on many trips ranging from Europe to Alaska and going on several cruises.
She was preceded in death by her father George B. Vernon and mother Winnifred (Martin) Vernon and her only sister George Ann Waller.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald Smith of Altus, her daughter, Melissa Meinen and husband Darrell of Tulsa, OK, son Mikel Smith and wife Kelly of Houston, TX, granddaughters Madeline Meinen, Mia Meinen, Molly Smith and Riley Smith.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Methodist Church Altus.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Altus, Oklahoma with Reverend Jerry Raab officiating.
