Obituary for Bernice Evelyn (Garrison) Hardy
Bernice Evelyn (Garrison) Hardy was born to James and Cynthia Garrison on September 26, 1920 at Hugo, Oklahoma. She was known as Bea to her many friends. At a young age, she and her family moved to Bethany, OK where she went to school and grew up. She attended Southern Nazarene University in Bethany and taught school briefly. She began working in a shoe store in downtown Oklahoma City where she met her future husband who was working in another shoe store. She married Alton G. Hardy on June 14, 1947 in Oklahoma City.

In 1951 Bea and Alton moved with their two children, Don and Gwen, to Altus to open their first restaurant on North Main St. JoAnn, their third and last came along in 1953. They owned and operated a restaurant in Altus for 27 years. They were known for their fried chicken and home-made pies. Bea cooked fresh pies every day. Although all of them were great, the chocolate was probably her best known. In 1978 they closed the restaurant and retired from their business. However, not one to be idle, she began working for the Altus School District as a cook in August 1978 and was affiliated with them until April 1991.

Bea and Alton were charter members of the Emmanuel Baptist Church where they were still members at the time of her home going. She was an active and much-loved Sunday School teacher until she became ill last October. She was quite a Bible scholar and loved gospel music very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Eula Mae Dennis, Lucille Garrison and Louvee Montooth; five brothers, Clyde Garrison, Morris Garrison, Harrell Garrison, Harry Garrison and Ralph Garrison.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Alton G. of the home; one son, Gary Don Hardy and wife Deborah of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Mary Gwen Holcombe of Oklahoma City and Jo Ann Goodfellow and husband Dean of Altus, Oklahoma; two brothers, Everett Garrison and wife Ruth of Phoenix, AZ and Robert "Chip" Garrison and his wife Lexa, of Bethany, OK; four grandchildren, Christy Holcombe of Wichita, KS, Richard Holcombe and his wife Erin of Shreveport, LA, Sarah Miller and husband Kevin of Oklahoma City and Emily Hardy of Oklahoma City; three great-grandchildren, Kristin and Brennan of Shreveport, LA and Nicole of Oklahoma City; three sisters-in-law, Joy Hardy of Altus, Wynona and Norma Garrison of the Oklahoma City area; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
