Obituary for Betty La June Walls
Betty La June Walls, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, at the age of ninety- two in Tuttle, Oklahoma. Born on August 26, 1932, in Olustee, Oklahoma, she was the cherished daughter of Mike and Jessie Byrd. A lifelong resident of Jackson County, Betty was deeply rooted in the community she loved.
After graduating from Altus High School in 1950, Betty began working at the Credit Bureau. Her life took a beautiful turn when she married the love of her life, Travis Walls, on January 15, 1954, in Altus. Together, they built a family founded on faith, love, and resilience.
A devoted and active member of First Baptist Church in Altus, Betty dedicated twenty- five years to teaching Sunday school, sharing her faith and wisdom with generations of children. She was a member of the Mary Sunday School Class and found great joy in fellowship and service.
Betty had an artistic spirit and a passion for teaching. From her own kitchen table, she taught decorative painting classes to children and adults for 20 years, nurturing creativity and connection through art. Her impact reached beyond her immediate community when she was featured in the book Prairie Mothers - In Their Own Words by Glyna Olson, honoring the lives and wisdom of prairie women in Southwest Oklahoma.
In 2019, Betty moved to Mustang, Oklahoma, to be near her daughter. Though she left Jackson County, her heart always remained with the people and places that shaped her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Travis; their infant daughter, Susan Renee; son, Chris Gene Walls, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Walls; parents, Mike and Jessie Byrd; parents-in-law, Lee and Ruby Walls; brothers-in-law, Leon Walls and Don Walls; and sister-in-law, Nora Walls.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Kerri Perry of Bridge Creek, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Cash Perry of Bridge Creek, Carson Perry of Moore, Chris Walls Jr. and husband Casey of Dallas, Texas, and Michelle Walls Dodgen and husband Silas of Custer City, Oklahoma; and great-grandchildren, Ava Dodgen, Jesse Dodgen, and Ruby Dodgen. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Jane Byrd of Altus; special cousin, Mandy Rogers and husband Dale of Edmond, Oklahoma; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Betty's legacy lives on not only through her family but also in the wisdom she shared with the young women of today and tomorrow. In Prairie Mothers, she encouraged others to be authentic, honest, and trustworthy. She advised, "Have a positive attitude. Always look up because that's where our source [of strength] comes from. Move forward and accomplish what God has given to you. Don't throw your talents by the wayside. In a relationship, be willing to say, 'I'm sorry' and be willing to forgive. Don't be selfish, and always look for the silver lining."
Her kindness, faith, and unwavering spirit will forever be remembered and cherished. Though she is no longer with us in body, her love and wisdom will continue to guide and inspire all who knew her.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 14, 2025, at the Centennial Chapel within the grounds of Altus City Cemetery, Altus, Oklahoma. Betty will be laid to rest next to her beloved Travis in Altus City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation
