Obituary for Bobby Spears Jones
Bobby Spears Jones was born August 30, 1921 in Altus, Oklahoma to John Isaac Jones and Georgia Irene (Cross) Jones. He attended Altus schools and was in the graduating class of 1940. He was a paper boy for the Altus Times democrat for several years. He was a charter member of Dick Jewels "That Altus Band". He served two years in the Altus unit of the Oklahoma National Guard. On February 5, 1940, he enlisted in the United States marine Corps and served aboard the heavy cruiser Chicago before transferring to the Fourth Marines in Shanghai, China and served with them after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The Fourth Marines served in Bataan and Corregidor until they were surrendered after six months of combat. He became a prisoner of war on May 6, 1942. He spent three and a half years doing severe labor in prison camps in the Phillipines and Japan. He was liberated from Japan on September 5, 1945. He was returned to the United States, hospitalized for three months and medically discharged after six years of honorable service.
After returning to Altus in 1946, Bobby engaged in demolition and reconstruction of commercial buildings, including fine residential houses and a service center on east Broadway known as Jonesville.
April 24, 1948, he married Myrtle Louise Barton. They have two children; a daughter Shirley Ann and a son, Gary Lynn Jones.
Bobby was a member of the First Christian Church of Altus. He was the chairman of East Broadway Improvements. He was very active in politics. He was Jackson County Republican Chairman for six years, a life member of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Disabled American Veterans, Blinded Veterans Association, and many more.
On April 24, 2004, Bobby and Myrtle celebrated fifty-six years of marriage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Para Lee, a brother, Gravis Jones and a son-in-law, Kenny Updegraff.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle, of the home in altus; a daughter, Shirley ann Updegraff; a son, Gary Lynn Jones; a granddaughter, Holly Day and her husband Dale Day, all of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by a brother, Harold Jones of Altus; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Lorene and Guy Franson of Littleton, Colorado and Thelma and Cecil Goff of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving are two nieces, Patrician Jones Blackman and her husband Don and Karen Jones Knox and her husband Jerry; two nephews, Patrick Jones and his wife Barbara of Bellevue, Nebraska and H. Bob Jones of Saudi Arabia and his wife Jean; other nieces and nephews are Kathy Franson of Littleton, Colorado, Amy Franson of Dallas, Texas, Nancy Phillips of Phoenix, Arizona, Eric Franson of Ft. Worth, Texas, Carl Franson of Littleton, Colorado and Jimmy Phillips of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 4, 2004 at the First Christian Church with reverend Jim Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
