Obituary for Brooks Jennings LaGree
Services will be held for Brooks Jennings LaGree at 10:00 a.m., Monday at the First United Methodist Church with The Reverend John Welch officiating. Burial will be in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Funeral Home.

Active in civic, church, and historical organizations, LaGree also was an agri-businessman and farmer. For the past 12 years he has been active in real estate and investments. Born January 18th, 1908 at Mound Ridge, Kansas, he was the son of Minnie Brouvillette and James LaGree. He was graduated from Newton, Kansas High School in 1927, and from the University of Missouri in 1932 with a B.A. Degree in business administration. LaGree was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and was active in several other campus organizations.

Following graduation he came to Altus and Hollis as an agri-businessman with International Harvester. Returning to Pierce City, MO, he worked for Railway Ice., a company with contracts for icing refrigerator cars. He became manager of the company's installation in Woodward. On June 26, 1939, he married Betty Helon Whiteside of Altus at the First United Methodist Church. They returned to Altus in 1942 when he became a member of the Altus AFB civilian staff.

He was active in agriculture both as a farmer and as a manager of Leger Mill for 15 years. During that time he worked with Gov. Henry Bellmon and the Oklahoma Wheat Commission in developing products to be marketed in the United States and abroad utilizing Oklahoma wheat. Later he was a goodwill ambassador and co-host for the Wheat Mission, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Japan on their visit to the Jackson County area.

After retiring at Leger Mill, he joined Dobbs and Creed Real Estate and Insurance Company and worked with them for the last 12 years. LaGree was an active member of Altus Kiwanis Club for the past 44 years, and a leader in many of it's philantropic activities. He was one of the organizers of the Altus Kiwanis Little Olympics. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a member of the official Board.

An avid outdoorsman and environmentalist, he received national recognition when he was featured in Field and Stream magazine for his expertise as a trout fisherman.

He is survived by: his wife, Helon, of the home; two sons, Brooks Jennings LaGree, Jr. of Ft. Leavenworth, KS and James Parker LaGree of Oklahoma; three daughters, Suzanne Elizabeth Kopitke of Dallas, TX, Helon Deanne Burnett of Larned, KS and Margie Jane Vargo of Arlington, TX; one sister, Lorraine Cunningham of Pittsburg, KS; 10 grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been set up at the First United Methodist Church.
