Obituary for Calvin Edwin Argo
Calvin Edwin Argo, a lifelong resident of Harmon County, Oklahoma, passed away on August 15, 2024, in Claremore, Oklahoma, at the age of ninety-seven. Born on January 29, 1927, north of the Salt Fork River at Argo's Crossing, Calvin was the son of Henry Clay Argo and Elizabeth Susan (Adkins) Argo.
Raised on the family farm in Harmon County, Calvin attended Vinson School until 1941, after which he continued his education at Arnett High School until enlisting in the United States Army. During World War II, Calvin served in Japan, assisting in the cleanup at Hiroshima and worked as a military police office near Tokyo. He was honorably discharged from military service in October 1946. Calvin returned home to Harmon County. While taking a trip to McKnight General Store, he met and immediately fell in love with Julia Archer. The two were united in holy matrimony on August 25, 1947, in Dodson, Texas. The couple settled on the family homestead and were blessed with six children: Edna, Bobby, Jay, Naomi, Edwina, and Elton.
Calvin dedicated his life to farming and ranching, specializing in cotton, alfalfa, and peanuts. He took great pride in raising cattle and growing watermelons and cantaloupes.
Calvin was a devoted man of faith and a member and deacon of the First Assembly of God in Hollis, Oklahoma. He loved spreading the message of Jesus Christ and enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music, both playing and singing. As an avid historian, he contributed weekly articles titled "Yesteryear Memories" to the Hollis newspaper and played a key role in organizing "Planning the Route: The History of Harmon County." He was also very fond of his Rat Terriers which were his constant companions.
Calvin will be remembered for his unwavering faith, dedication to his family, and contributions to his community.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-two years, Julia Archer Argo; father, Henry Clay Argo; mother, Elizabeth Susan Adkins Argo; daughter, Naomi Ruth Crockett; brothers: Herman Argo, Ivan Argo, Earl Argo; sisters: Fannie Belle Nell, Muriel Argo Ray; daughters-in-law: Christy Argo, Debi Argo.
Left to carry on his legacy are his sons: Bobby and his wife Nita Argo, Jay and his wife Rhnea Argo, Elton and his wife Donna Argo; his daughters: Edna Argo, Edwina and her husband Danny McKee; his grandchildren: Jaime Kons, Jason and wife Lulu Argo, Timothy and wife Elizabeth Argo, Angel and husband Jerry Sherrell, Jared and wife Becky Argo, Calli and husband Josh Sparkman, Josh and wife Jessica McKee, Jamae and husband Don Ramsey, Logan and wife Ashlee Argo, Kayla Argo; his great-grandchildren: Dason and Katelyn Sparkman, Calvin Kons, Sierra Kons, Savana Kons, Bethany Argo, Kamryn Argo, Jordan Argo, Triniti Argo, Paris Argo, Ashlie and husband Damion Rodriguez, Charity Argo, Jachin Argo, Lincoln McKee, Isla McKee, Zoee Smith, Slayte Smith, Sawyer Argo, Jack Argo, Waylon Argo; his great great grandchildren: Dason Sparkman, Katelynn Sparkman Deanna Rodriguez and Amara Rodriguez; his sister-in-law Laura and husband Don Staggs; his double nephew Larry and wife Linda Argo, and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
The Argo family will receive friends 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 18, 2024 at Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2024 at Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma with interment to follow at Independance Cemetery, Vinson, Oklahoma with military honors being rendered.
