Obituary for Calvin Gideon McMindes
Calvin Gideon McMindes, affectionately known as "Mac", age 75, long time resident and educator of Eldorado, died Tuesday, May 19th, 1987, night at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services have been set for Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Eldorado with The Reverend David Stephenson of Woodward, OK officiating. Burial will be in the Eldorado Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Funeral Home.
Born March 13th, 1912 at Watonga, OK, he was the son of W.P. and Mary McMindes. He lived in Watonga until 1922. McMindes was a graduate of Arkansas Tech and Oklahoma State University. On July 20, 1935 he married Katheryne Hall at Stillwater, OK.
After teaching one year at Lacy, OK, McMindes opened up a Department of Vocational Agriculture in Eldorado in 1937. He went on to teach in the Eldorado schools for the next 37 years. He retired in 1974. McMindes received many Honors and Awards in his field. He had three students to receive State Farmer Degrees and five strudents went on to qualify to teach Vocational Agriculture. He served as a Teacher Trainer for 15 years for Oklahoma State University, and was instrumental in establishing facilities to house student livestock projects in Eldorado. He also received numerous awards including an Eldorado Alumni Award for Dedicated Service, and awards from the Jackson County Fair Board for his help throughout the years.
He was a member of the Oklahoma Education Association, National Education Association, Oklahoma Vocational & Tech Education Association, National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association, Masons, Lions Club, Jackson County Industrial Committee, and a honorary member of the Jackson County 4-H Club Advisors. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Eldorado. He was preceded in death by his wife Katheryne May 7, 1987.
Survivors include: two daughters, Martha Carol Young of San Bernardino, CA and Helen Diane Lynch of Woodward, OK; three brothers, Willis P. McMindes Jr. of Alta, CA, Robert McMindes of Pollock Pines, CA and A. J. McMindes of Las Vegas, NV; three sisters, Marie Rose of Lincoln, CA, Eunice Underwood of Yakima, WA and Naoma Julufka of Sacramento, CA; three grandchildren, Diane Young Pike, David Young and Charles Lynch.
