Calvin Wayne Gipson, age 81, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
Calvin was born on April 19, 1934 to Edley Ray and Arribell (Dorries) Gipson in Amarillo, Texas. He attended Warren School until his senior year and graduated from Blair High School in 1952. He professed his faith and was a member of the Warren Baptist Church.
Calvin served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. When the Army found out he could play music, he was immediately transferred to serve in a band playing music for the troops. He entertained the troops during his military service. Upon discharge from the service, he returned home to marry the love of his life, Joyce M. Goolsby on August 31, 1958. To this marriage three children were born, Pam, Mike and Bobby.
Calvin worked as a sewing machine repair technician at Kellwood"s for many years here in Altus and later owned and operated Gipson"s Sewing Machine Repair. He loved his music. He played 20 years at the Altus VFW and later with several other bands including the Cimarron Band, playing at the Altus Community Center each Thursday night. He was known for his steel guitar playing along with a variety of other musical instruments.
He was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Lynn Gipson; his parents, Edley Ray and Arribell Gipson; three brothers, Wallace and wife Mildred, Larry (Hoot) and Charles; three sisters, Juanita Coleen Gipson, Marie Gipson McElroy and husband Leland and Margie Eileen Gipson Love and husband Delmar; brothers-in-law Hermon and Thurmond Goolsby, Aubrey (Toby) Elliott and one sister-in-law Audrey Goolsby Wiese and husband Ray.
Calvin is survived by his wife Joyce of the home; two children, Pam Harris and husband Terry of Republic, Missouri and Mike Gipson and wife Jackie of Omaha, Nebraska; five Grandchildren, Roy Michael Gipson and wife Chelsea of Omaha, Nebraska, Amber Gipson Seville and husband Greg of Newport News, Virginia, Melissa Harris Miller and husband Tucker of Springfield, Missouri, Vanessa Gipson and Christopher Gipson; three great-grandchildren, Caden and Bryson Seville of Newport News, Virginia and Marion Miller of Springfield, Missouri. He is also survived by niece Kay McElroy Stewart and husband David as well as a host of nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
Funeral services for Calvin Gipson will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, November 12, 2015, at the Warren Baptist Church with Pastor Ed Heflin officiating. Interment will follow at the Warren Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
The family will greet friends on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, from 6 until 7 p.m. at Lowell-Tims.
