Obituary for Charles Rooker
Charles Edward Rooker, 81, passed away Friday, July 6, 2001 in Wilkins Nursing Center in Duncan after a lengthy illness of heart disease and other related illnesses.
Services will be held at 1:30 on Monday, July 9, 2001 in the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel in Duncan, with Dr. Jack Robbins and Rev. J.R. earls officiating. The casket will be opened one hour prior to the service for viewing. Visitation will be held at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus at 10:30am on Tuesday, July 10. Masonic rites conducted by Darwin Rooker (nephew) and Altus Lodge members, and burial will be at City Cemetery in Altus immediately following visitation. Friends are welcome at either or both services. Arrangements are under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home of Duncan, and Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
Mr. Rooker was born January 20, 1920 in Altus, Oklahoma to Randolph Augustus and Bertha Pearl Clarke Rooker, the ninth of ten children and the last to survive.
He attended school in Altus until the death of his father in 1929. The family then moved to a farm in the Friendship-Warren community where he completed high school at Warren. He volunteered for military service during World War II in 1942, served more than 31/2 years in the 670th Air Squadron in England and was discharged in 1945.
He married Naomi Earls of Altus on September 16, 1946 in the First Baptist Church of Altus and they joyously celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in their home in Duncan September 8k 1996.
He attended Oklahoma A & M College (OSU) in Stillwater, Oklahoma before beginning a 31 year career with the US Bureau of Reclamation. After six years with the W.C. Austin Project in Altus, he transferred to the Grand Coulee Project in Washington State which at the time, was the largest irrigation project in the world. In 1958 he moved with his family to El Paso, Texas, and became irrigation manager for the Ysleta Branch of the Rio Grand Project until his retirement in 1977. He was selected to attend administration school for the civil service region and also served on the board of civil service examiners. He was employed by Mortgage Investment
Company from 1977 to 1985.
Mr. Rooker was a long time member of the Friendship
Community Baptist Church of the Altus area; a charter member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Othello, Washington; and a member of the Altus Masonic Lodge.
Mr Rooker is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Kathleen, Ayleen, Cora, Thomas, Robert, LLoyd, Trula, James and Margaret.
Survivors include his loving wife, Naomi, of 54 years; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Jerry Crenshaw of Longview, Texas and Charla and Deryll Friday of Sanger, Texas; three granddaughters Kasey Crenshaw, Julie and Kaitlyn Friday; one step-grandson, Jerry Crenshaw, Jr; and several nieces and nephews, including Paige Rooker Nelson and Julie Rooker Klie.
Honorary pallbearers will be Art Anchando, George Baker, James Ford, Nelvin Friday, Jake Gunkel, Glenn Harris, Joe Johns, Doug Klie, Larry Martin, James , James Nelson, James Powell, Jerry Rooker, Robert Allen Rooker, A.H. "Knack" Schnorrenberg, Port Schnorrenberg, Sean Shallenberger, Morris Speck, Dr. John Walker, and Wayne Wilson.
Memorials contributions may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church in Duncan, or the Masonic Home for the Aging in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
