Obituary for Chauncey C. Barrett

Chauncey Barrett, of Altus, Oklahoma, went to be with his Lord on Monday, July 19, 2010. He and his identical twin brother, Charles, were born September 21, 1921, to Charles and Eva Barrett of Martha, Oklahoma. He grew up on the family farm northwest of Martha. Chauncey attended Martha schools, where he was active in the High School band. He was a graduate of the Altus Junior College.
He married Ruth Caves September 6, 1941, in Oklahoma City, and she was the love of his life. He would often attribute their long lasting marriage to the daily habit they began shortly after establishing their home of beginning each morning reading the Bible and praying together. They were very active in the Martha Baptist Church where Chauncey served for many years as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher of the men"s Bible class, and deacon. He also served on the Martha School Board for 25 years. In 1983, he and his wife became members of the First Baptist Church of Altus. They taught a class for young married couples for a number of years. Following this, he taught the adult men"s class for 20 years. He also served in the capacity of deacon. Chauncey was an active Gideon, speaking all over the state of Oklahoma. He held multiple offices, including State Chaplain.
Known for his unwavering honesty and integrity, he and his identical twin, recognized in the area as the Barrett Brothers, farmed together for many years. In 1972, they received the Master of Agronomy Award from Oklahoma State University. In 1974, they were featured, along with one of their Steiger Tractors, on the cover of the Farmer Stockman Magazine. Chauncey served on the National Cotton Council for 10 years. In 2002, he was inducted into the Western State College Hall of Fame.
Chauncey is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Altus; daughters, Dana Gant and husband Joe, of Plano, Texas, and Betty Barrett, of Los Angeles, California; granddaughters, Melinda Burns, and husband Mike, of Longview, Texas, and Lisa Hollin, and husband Jeff, of Frisco, Texas; eight great grandchildren, Katie Burns, Kristin Burns, Barrett Burns, Joshua Hollin, Hayden Hollin, Lauren Hollin, Luke Montgomery, and Jake Montgomery. In addition, he is survived by his identical twin, Charles Barrett and his wife, Fern, nephews, David Barrett and wife Carolyn, John Barrett and wife Martha, niece, Rita Jackson and husband Fred, and many other precious relatives and dear friends.
Chauncey was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Stephanie Montgomery, nephew, Gary Barrett, and niece, Becky Barrett.
He will be most remembered for his giving spirit, passion, and zeal for Christ and for his effort to win as many souls as possible to the Lord.

The family will receive friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Thursday, July 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Altus with Dr. Jeff Moore and Reverend Keith Wiginton officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
