Cleo Martin, age 101, of Hobart and formerly of Mangum, passed away at Hobart Living Center early Thursday morning, January 14, 2010.
Mrs. Martin was born on May 2, 1908, to Leondios Ramey and Mary Alice (London) Singley in Covington, Texas. On November 15, 1941, she married William Herbert Martin, in Hobart. From June 20, 1944 until December 12, 1945, she proudly served her country with the 4121st Army Air Force Base Unit. A 1926 graduate of Mangum High School, Cleo received her Bachelor’s of Arts Degree from Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha and later obtained her Master’s Degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, in Weatherford and was the second oldest living alumnus. She taught in Oklahoma for ten years and then twenty years at elementary schools in San Antonio, Texas. In 1973, she retired from teaching and returned to Oklahoma. Cleo was an active member of the Methodist Church for many years where she taught Sunday School and worked with the mission programs. At age 95, she was baptized at the Mangum Church of Christ and remained a member until her death. A lover of people, Cleo spent her life helping and teaching others.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herbert, and two sisters, Mytrice (Mim) Hamilton and Francis (Pal) Wells, she is survived by two sisters, Al’ Louise (Tiny) Cupp of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Margaret Moss of Hobart along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services for Cleo Martin will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at Greer Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Don Henry officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
