HARDWICK
Janice Beach Hardwick went to her heavenly court on Saturday, September 23, 2017, as the last buzzer sounded. Janice was born in Altus, Oklahoma on September 14, 1952, to Tommy and Jane Beach. She grew up in the Elmer community where she developed a strong work ethic and a passion for basketball.
Janice attended Southside School graduating as Salutatorian of the Class of 1970. While a high school student at Southside, Janice was a standout basketball player. She led her team to two state tournaments winning the state Class B championship in 1970. Averaging 40 points per game her senior year, Janice was named to the Oklahoma All-State team. In the fall of 1970, Janice went to Plainview, Texas to attend Wayland Baptist College and received a scholarship to play basketball with the Flying Queens. During her tenure at Wayland, Janice had the opportunity to play in National Championship games, winning 3 national titles. She also was chosen to play for the USA national teams in the 1971 Pan American Games in Columbia, South America and the 1973 World Games in Moscow, Russia. In addition, she was named as an All American athlete in women's basketball 3 of her collegiate years. In May 1974, Janice graduated with a Bachelor's Degree and began her 43 year coaching career.
Petersburg, Texas was the first stop for Janice's coaching career. After two years coaching basketball, tennis, and cheerleading at Petersburg, Janice returned to Oklahoma landing at Navajo High School where for 28 years she coached and mentored many young girls. She coached 7 All-State Players, and made 7 state basketball tournament appearances with the Navajo Indians. In 1994, Janice was selected to coach the Oklahoma High School Coaches Association All State game. Her next stop was Western Oklahoma State College where she coached for 5 years making the playoffs 4 of those years. At the time of her death, Janice was the assistant girls' basketball coach at Altus High School. Throughout her coaching years, Janice spent weeks in the summer teaching girls of all ages the fundamentals of basketball at numerous camps in Southwest Oklahoma.
Other honors include being inducted into the Jackson County Sports Hall of Fame.
In 2000, Janice was named to the Oklahoma All Century Team. In 2003, she was inducted into the Wayland Baptist College Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2015, Janice, was inducted into the Oklahoma High School Girls Basketball Association Hall of fame. She was a 41 year member of that organization. This past season Janice received the prestigious Charles Heatly Award.
On June 30, 1963, Janice accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was baptized in a local pond, the Sand Pit. She was a member of the Elmer United Methodist Church where she attended faithfully.
Janice was blessed when Tim Hardwick stumbled into her life. They were married on June 10, 1983 in Elmer, Oklahoma where they eventually built their retirement home.
Being a very competitive person, Janice enjoyed any game where a score was kept. Whether it was a card game, board game, dominoes, or ping pong she expected to win. And you really didn't want to take her on in arm wrestling. Later in life, her personal game became golf. Her passion, as well as her temper, were often witnessed by others on the golf course, but she thoroughly enjoyed her days spent golfing with friends and family. An avid fan of all sports, Janice spent her time away from the gym and the golf course in her recliner watching multiple sports games on her big screen. This was only possible because Janice was always in control of the remote.
Janice was preceded in death by her father, Tommy Beach; her in-laws Merle and Aileen Hardwick; grandparents Monty and Cordie Beach, and Loyd and Iva Briscoe; and also a nephew, Brandon Kahle Beach.
Janice is survived by her husband, Tim Hardwick; her mother, Jane Beach; two sisters, Carolyn Haught and husband Mark; Cindy Wakeman and husband Bobby; one brother, T. J. Beach and wife Diane. Also, sisters-in-law, Merlene Smith and husband Stan; Susan Mohler and husband David; brothers-in-law Gary Hardwick and wife Gwen; Don Muegge and wife Bonnie.
