Darrell Henry McClendon, age 67, of Mangum, passed away Monday afternoon, November 5, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Darrell was born in Mangum, Oklahoma on July 7, 1945, to Mildred (Weston) Gable and H.M. McClendon. He attended high school in Mangum, and after graduation he attended Altus Junior College for a short time before moving to California, in 1967. There he worked at McDonald Douglas Aircraft. Sometime later he moved back to Oklahoma and worked as an electrical lineman for the City of Altus for 14 years. In the mid 1980"s he founded McClendon Electric, which he currently owned and operated. Darrell met Jenny (Rocha) Roe in 1992, in Altus, Oklahoma and they were married on September 30, 1994.
Darrell was best known for his musical talents and his ministry. He released two country gospel albums with his sister, Pat, in the late 70"s. He traveled with his family signing and ministering all over the U.S. Within the last few years he had begun to write music, sing, and play the guitar again. Within the last two years he had written and recorded three CDs of which two have been released and sold. Darrell"s music will forever be his legacy and continues to touch many lives.
Preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Junior Jaco, Darrell is survived by his wife, Jenny McClendon; one sister, Patricia Tharp and husband Jerry of Mangum; four daughters, Tammy Veroneau and husband Scott of Gulf Breeze, Florida, Mistie McClendon and husband Kevin Ramos of Panama City, Florida, Traci Stender and husband Mike of Crestview of Florida, Theresa Newson and husband Brian of Oklahoma City; and Jeff and Gina Carlisle; 10 grandchildren, Nate and Micah Veroneau, Cole McClendon, Joseph and Michael Stender, Tera Cardenas, Kaitlin Tally and Zach, Ryan, and Trey Carlisle; two great-grandchildren, Deulce Cardenes and Kaidence Heinen along with many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews, as well as many other family and friends.
Funeral services for Darrell McClendon will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 8, 2012, at the Church of New Beginnings in Mangum, Oklahoma with Pastor Mike McCord and Shawn Laughlin officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
