Obituary for Debra Kaye Lewis
Debra Kaye Lewis was born on September 16, 1952, in Elk City, Oklahoma to Lawrence and Bernice Ballou. She went to her heavenly home on September 12, 2025, at her home in Duke, Oklahoma, at the age of 72. Debbie graduated high school from Sayre, Oklahoma in 1970. She married her high school sweetheart, Kit Ray Lewis, on December 28, 1970. They started their married life at Sayre where they both attended Sayre Junior College.
Debbie was the type of country girl who was beautiful, but could drive any type of farm equipment, helping her dad, even working cattle. After receiving her associates degree from Sayre, Debbie completed her bachelor's degree at Cameron University in Lawton. Kit and Debbie moved to Duke in August of 1973, where Kit was a teacher and basketball coach while Debbie was a reading specialist for the Duke Schools. They added to their family with daughters, Kara Kit in 1980, and Tarran Ray in 1983: and that's when Debbie took the job of mother and stayed home. Both girls grew to become excellent basketball players and Debbie could always be found in the front row cheering section, cheering for her family. A fond memory for the family and Duke Community was when Debbie was in the hospital in Oklahoma City delivering Kara while Kit was coaching at his first state tournament appearance. She was a trooper and followed the game during labor. Fortunately, Kit arrived at the hospital in time for the delivery. History repeated itself to a degree, when Kit was coaching Kara, a senior, competing in the state tournament on her eighteenth birthday. The entire Duke cheering section sang happy birthday to Kara as the minutes of the game ticked off. Duke won the State Championship title that year and no one was more proud or involved than Debbie.
Kit and Debbie started the Taraco Enterprises business and Debbie was a big part of that business as long as she was healthy enough to participate. She was a working partner with Kit. She was a member of the Duke Church of Christ where she had many friends. She loved her family and friends and was always involved in supporting their activities.
Debbie was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Everly Peters; brother, Kirk Ballou; and sister, Janice Thompson.
Survivors include her husband, Kit, of the home; her daughters, Kara and husband, Peter Wall, of Weatherford, Oklahoma and Tarran and husband, Colby Peters, of Tipton, Oklahoma; 5 grandchildren, Estie, Colter, and Birdie Peters of Tipton, and Kash and Whitlee Wall of Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Baird officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at the Sayre-Doxey Cemetery, Sayre, under the care of the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Debbie's name to the Duke School Foundation, PO Box 345, Duke, OK 73532.
