Donald Ray Burris, longtime resident of Hollis, Oklahoma passed away October 18th, 2023, at the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of seventy-eight.
Donald Ray Burris was born on April 15, 1945, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Cornelius and Clara Mae (Vaughn)Burris. Don was raised and educated in Hollis, Oklahoma. On May 27, 1965, Don volunteered to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky where he was in the infantry and served as a radio operator. Don was deployed to Vietnam and saw heavy combat. He was in Vietnam for over a year when he was wounded. Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to Kentucky and lived in Knoxville. He worked as a chef for several different restaurants, and everyone was always delighted with his culinary skills. Later in life, he returned to Hollis, Oklahoma to be close to his brothers. In his free time Don enjoyed playing pool and in his younger years was a pool shark, he also enjoyed going for walks around Hollis, and he truly found pleasure in helping others, he would lend family members or friends his car without thinking about himself. He also maintained an open-door policy at his home, if you were in need and needed help Don could always be counted on to be there for you. He was a mentor to his brother, a friend to strangers, and a confidant to anyone in need. Don leaves a legacy of love and compassion to his family, friends, and community.
Preceding Don in death were his parents, Cornelius and Clara Mae (Vaughn)Burris, and brother Leroy James Burris.
Left to honor Don’s memory and legacy are his daughter, Donnitra Garcia, and husband, granddaughter, and three great-granddaughters, brothers, Cornelius Burris, Jr., Ray Burris, and Johnnie Burris; numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2023, at Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.
