The family were share croppers and worked for various farmers in the Hester community. She was blessed with two siblings; Martha and Hulon. At the age of eleven she asked the Lord to be her personal savior and was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Mangum. The country church they attended in Hester did not have a working baptistry and she did not want to be baptized in a horse tank. She attended county schools and graduated from City View in 1947. Upon graduation she set out to get a job and went with Tommy Buchanan and his mom on the road selling furniture polish for all of two weeks. She then went to work at M.E. Moses. She attended Mangum Junior College for a short time and was hired on with Bell Telephone as an operator. On September 7th, 1948 she married McGregor Ray Coffman in Wellington Texas. She joined the Central Christian Church and was active as a Sunday School teacher and board member for many years. She continued to work for thirteen more years with the telephone company. In June of 1949, the most beautiful baby was born McGregor Ray Coffman Jr. In August of 1952, a daughter, Jimmie Kay was born into the family. Doris later went to work as a bookkeeper for Jack Caffey Ford and Oluf Toole. In July of 1965, Randall Kyle Coffman was born. Shortly thereafter, she went to work for the Mangum City Hospital and studied to become an accredited medical records technician by correspondence course. After earning the accreditation, she was moved into the director’s role of the medical records department.
