Obituary for Doris Sue Painter
Doris Sue "Dot" Painter, 90, of Hollis, passed away Friday, October 12, 2012, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Hollis.
Dot was born September 13, 1922, in Hollis to Cecil Jerome and Germie B. (Strickland) Nell. She graduated from Ron High School in 1940 where she played basketball and ran track. She married Tolbert Painter and they had two sons, Roger and Nick. Tolbert passed away in 1974.
Dot worked at the First State Bank and Trust in Hollis for over thirty years. All her co-workers and customers loved her positive outlook on life and wonderful smile. She was a member of the Hollis Blackeyed Pea Theater where she played "Minnie Pearl." Her "howdy" greeting made folks who attended the festival laugh and smile for many years. If you ever knew Dot, you knew her affection for a red, black, and white wardrobe...even her pajamas! Her family and friends were so special in her life. Dot was very active in her community and was the caretaker for McKnight Cemetery for many years until her health began to fail. Dot was a longtime and faithful member of the Hollis Church of Christ.
Preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Germie Nell, brother, Glenn Nell, and her dear in-laws Hugh and Edith Painter, Dot is survived by her two loving and devoted sons, Roger Painter and wife Gay (Ford) of Kemp, Texas, and Nick Painter of Frisco, Texas; grandson, Trent Painter and wife Cheri of Norman, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Traci Wagner and husband Sam of Flint, Texas; great-grandchildren, McKay Painter, Hayden Wagner, and Aubri Wagner. Upon Roger's marriage to Gay in 1961, Dot became a sister to Bill and Margy Ford and "Granny Dot" to Gay's siblings, Billie Joy, Shelee, Jimmy, and eventually, to their children and grandchildren. Dot is also survived by cousins, Dub Nell, Geraldine Carrick, "Scooter" Nell, Wanda Faye Williams, and G.Q. Nell. Her long-time friend, Doris Wiley and many other family and friends will miss her greatly.
The family wishes to thank Colonial Manor Nursing Home and its caring staff, Dr. Akram Abraham, and the staff of Harmon Memorial Hospital for their love and devotion these past years for the wonderful care they gave Dot.
Memorial donations may be made in Dot's memory to the Harmon County Museum, the Alzheimer's Association, or a charity of one's choice.
The family will greet friends at Harmon County Funeral Home in Hollis on Friday, October 19, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Dot will Lie in State at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus Wednesday and Thursday. Friends in Hollis may pay their respects on Friday beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 20, 2012, at the Church of Christ in Hollis with Bruce Sexton officiating. Interment will follow at McKnight Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
