Obituary for Dorothy Georgene Fariss Jones
Dorothy Georgene Fariss, daughter of Ira Milton, Sr., and Ethel (Fields)Fariss was born September 26, 1915 at the home of her maternal grandparents, Monroe and Martha Fields, in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma and died February 7, 2005 at Altus, Oklahoma. Dorothy grew to womanhood on the family farm on the Trail Flat, north of Leedey, Oklahoma. An accomplished seamstress and possessing expert culinary skills, she had the responsibility of cooking for the family ranch hands before the age of ten. Dorothy attended both Trail and Leedey schools, graduating from Trail High School in 1933.
On December 15, 1939 she was united in marriage to Wendell Jones at the Methodist Parsonage in Clinton, Oklahoma. They established a home on their farm moving into a new house they built prior to marriage. To this union were born two children, a son, Gail P. and a daughter, Helen A. After 35 years on the farm, Wendell and Dorothy retired to a new home in Elk City. Wendell died April 6, 2004, at which time Dorothy moved to Altus to be near her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
An active member and supporter of both the Leedey and Elk City First Baptist Church where she participated in numerous activities, Dorothy was a humble woman with a devout faith in her Creator. Her family brought her great joy and she reveled in their happiness and accomplishments. She gave them an unconditional love that will endure through time.
although the Parkinson's syndrome ravaged her body for more than 20 years, never complaining, Dorothy maintained her charming wit, beautiful smile and courage, leaving behind a legacy of strength, courage, wisdom and love.
Preceded by her parents and a sister, Georgie Fariss, Dorothy is survived by her son and his wife, Gail and Sandra Jones, Duncan, Oklahoma; a daughter and her husband Helen and Jimmy King of Altus Oklahoma; grandchildren, Shellie and Curtis Thornton, Altus, Oklahoma and Shawn Whorton, Decatur , Alabama. Three great-grandsons; Hunter Whorton, Collin and Garrett Thornton and her brother, Ira Milton, Jr. and his wife, Fencil and their family of Leedey, Oklahoma.
Graveside services for Dorothy Georgene Fariss Jones is scheduled for Thursday, February 10, 2005 at 11:00 am at he Trail Cemetery at Leedey, Oklahoma.
Mrs Jones will lie in state Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at noon at Shaw Funeral Home in Leedey, Oklahoma.
