Obituary for Dr. Clyde Gillespie Russell
Dr. Clyde Gillespie Russell, age 85, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 1996, at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
A Celebration of Life for Dr. Russell has been scheduled for 11 A.M., Friday at the First Baptist Church in Altus, with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Lowell Tims Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Russell was born November 9th, 1910, in Brandon, Missouri to George Washington and Mary Jane (Gillespie) Russell. He married Maude Marie Scott on June 1, 1933 in Ironton, MO. Clyde graduated from Southwest Baptist Junior College in Boliver, MO. and from Warrensburg State Teachers College. He taught school in a one room country schoolhouse in the hills of Missouri before attending dental school. He graduated from Dental School in Kansas City, MO in 1937. They moved to Altus that same year. Dr. Russell opened his dental practice in the Gosselin Building, now the National Bank of Commerce. He later built a clinic at 1133 E. Pecan, which later became the hospital parking lot. During the mid-1980's the new clinic on Tamarack Road was built. Dr. Russell retired in 1993 after 56 years of practicing dentistry.
Dr. Russell was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. He was a faithful member of the Kiwanis Club with perfect attendance for 52 years; member of the Altus School Board, retiring in October 1986 after 43 years; Masonic Lodge and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Russell was also a member of the Oklahoma Dental Association and the American Dental Association. The 1995 Miss Altus Pageant was dedicated to Dr. Russell, the gymnasium at Southeast Junior High was named in his honor; he received a Life Service Award from Southwest Baptist University in 1991. Dr. and Mrs. Russell were selected to represent the Altus Community as 'Mr. and Mrs. Western Trails in 1994. In 1994, the Altus Public Schools Foundation Inc. presented Dr. Russell with the Outstanding Service Award.
Dr. Russell was a wonderful man to family and friends and will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by many. Memorials may be made in Dr. Russell's name to the Altus Public Schools Foundation, Inc., the Baptist Student Union at 2515 N. Main, Altus, OK 73521; and the OSU Athletic Scholarship Fund, Stillwater, OK 74074 or the memorial of your choice.

Smith, AR; four great-grandchildren, Daireth Elizabeth Holleyman, Ryan Scott Josey, Kiley Anne Josey, all of Stillwater and Reagan Russell of Ft.
