Dr. Tanell Frank (Dake) Dakil, age 87, passed away on April 11, 2016, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. He was born July 3, 1928, in Mangum, Oklahoma to Frank S. Dakil and Edna Mae Shadid Dakil. Dr. Dakil graduated from Childress High School where he lettered in five sports three consecutive years. Dake went on the University of Oklahoma for two years where he lettered in Tennis and was quarterback winning the school Intermural Championship. He then went to Texas Tech for one year and was accepted into Baylor Dental School in Dallas, Texas at the age of 23. Dake then entered the Air Force at Keesler AFB MS as a Second Lieutenant in 1953 where he practiced Dentistry for two years. While at Keesler he participated and won many matches at the World Wide Air Force Tennis Championships in Washington DC where he made it to the Quarterfinals. At Keesler AFB he met and married the love of his life Mary Jo Reed on 1 Oct 1954. They started a one year honeymoon in a garage apartment right off the shoreline of Biloxi, Mississippi. After Dr. Dakil was honorably discharged from the military they moved to back to his hometown in Childress, Texas. Dr. Dakil began his practice there in 1955. After the tragic death of his mother, Edna Mae Shadid Dakil in March of 1956 Dr. Dakil and Jo moved to Altus, Oklahoma on the advice of his Uncle Hoyt Shadid where he opened his dental practice at the NBC building in downtown Altus. There he practiced in Altus and Snyder until he retired in 1988. Dr. Dakil and Mary Jo were members of First Baptist Altus where he accepted Jesus and was baptized.

Tanell and Mary Jo had four children: Edna Mae (Edee), Gregory Dakil, and he was preceded in death by his parents and his daughters Janell Renee Dakil in 1983 after a sudden cardiac arrest and Angel Dakil in 1958 who was born prematurely.

Upon retirement, he played in many golf tournaments, winning 8 different tournament Championships. It is noted that he birded every hole at least once at the Elks Country Club and had three hole-in-ones at different courses in SW Oklahoma. Dake was active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes served on the State Board of FCA along with Tom Landry. He was also the past president of the SW Dental Association on two separate occasions. He did volunteer work and loved his job as crossing guard as Sunset Elementary.

Dr. Dakil is survived by his three sisters, Joan Dakil Tanner, Eleanor Dakil and Linda Dakil of Denton, TX; his daughter and son in law, Edee and Jack Hayden of Altus, OK and his son and daughter in law Gregory and Tracy Dakil of Chickasha, OK; Four grandson sons: Bert Collingbourne and his wife Olivia of Oklahoma City, Michael Collingbourne and his wife Amy of Elmer, Ok, Douglas Dakil and Mitchel Dakil of Chickasha, OK; He is also survived by Bob and Jill Shelton of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Joy Hayden of Fort worth, TX. Dr. Dakil has 14 great grandchildren and his niece Janet Tanner-Gordon, and a nephew, Ray Tanner Jr. and one aunt, Olga Shadid-Hawkins, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

His family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the outreach ministries of First Baptist Church of Altus and/or the American Heart Association.

The family will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 10:00 am at Lowell Tims Funeral Home with Dr. Jeff Moore and Pastor Troy Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
