Eddie Joe Buck
Joe Buck, of Altus, civic leader, professional baseball player, and businessman, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2007, at his home following a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Eddie Joe Buck was born in Elmer, Oklahoma, on May15, 1931, to Joe and Lola Mae Buck. He grew up in Altus, and is remembered by many for cycling his physically handicapped sister, Bettie Anne, on his bicycle handles to Washington Elementary. He lovingly took her to ball games and wherever he went.
Buck attended Altus Schools and graduated in 1940 at he age of 17.
His mentor, Bill Williams, recommended Joe for a baseball scholarship at Oklahoma A & M, now known as Oklahoma State University. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity in Stillwater, Oklahoma. During his junior year, he signed a baseball contract with the Boston Red Sox. He graduated from Oklahoma A & M with a degree in economics.
Joe credits Eula and Clifford Peterson for the encouragement they and the First Baptist Church gave him through his growing up years.
After college, Joe served two years in the Korean Conflict, then returned to the Red Sox. He played until 1956.
In October of 1956, Joe received the opportunity to begin his career in Altus. He entered into business with Johnny Gregg Real Estate and Insurance. It later became Gregg, Buck, & Roberson Agency, now known as Century 21 Altus Prestige Realty.
For many years, Buck was actively involved in many civic endeavors in the community. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce twice and as president of the Chamber of Commerce twice as president of the Kiwanis Club twice. He was president of the Altus and Oklahoma Board of Realtors, served on military affairs, and attended Altus Air Force committees regularly.
He served three years as an Altus School board member and was a deacon at the First Baptist Church, where he also taught Sunday School for several years to high school boys. Joe spearheaded the drive to build the Industrial Park, and worked diligently to build the Southwest Technical
Center.
In 1952, leading Oklahoma A & M to a Missouri Valley Conference Southern Division championship, Joe became the first Oklahoman to earn All-American Baseball honors. In 1992, Joe was in the first class to be inducted into the Oklahoma State Baseball Hall of Fame in Stillwater.
Joe shared special times with his grandchildren when he took them to breakfast each Wednesday morning prior to school. After semi-retirement, Joe and Marilyn enjoyed motor homing throughout the U.S.
His family honored Joe on his 75th birthday with a golf tournament and luncheon at the Altus Elks and Country Club. This was a show of appreciation for Joe's devotion to his family, as well as time and efforts in building "Altus With A Future To Share."
Joe Buck was preceded in death by his parents Joe &Lola Mae Buck, and his sister, Bettie Anne.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of the home; his brother Bill Buck of New Orleans, La; his children, Mary and Billy Moore of Lubbock, TX, Gregg and Andrea Buck of Altus, Tina and David Cossey, Teri Philbrick and Toye and George Mitchell, all of Edmond, OK. His great pleasure was in being a grandparent to Whitney Mitchell Nelson and her husband Jeremy, Carson Mitchell, Stacy and Brayden Buck, Megan Meyers, Abbey and Bennett Philbrick, and Jacob and Justin Cossey.
Services for Joe Buck will be 10L30 am, Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at the First Baptist Church in Altus. Dr. Jeff Moore will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Restlawn Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
