Obituary for Edris A. Peterson
Mrs. Clifford (Edris) Peterson, longtime resident of Southwestern Oklahoma and well known throughout the state, especially in musical and educational circles, died Monday, January 24th, 1994 at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

Born January 31st, 1908 in Hollis, OK, she was the daughter of Dr. E. A. and Emma (Pennington) Abernethy, among the early pioneers of this area, and moved with her parents to Altus on April 16, 1909. Mrs. Peterson attended public schools, graduating in 1925. In 1935 she was married to Dr. Wayne Starkey, who died in October 16, 1969. She was active in MacDowell Club of Allied Arts, the Erolethian Study Club and L'Aguille Club serving them in various offices. She served a term on the Board of Trustees of Oklahoma Baptist University. She also was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Western Trails Historical and Genealogical Society which was the founder of the Museum of the Western Prairie.

Mrs. Peterson was the wife of the well known Oklahoma School Administrator and former Altus School Superintendent, Clifford Peterson, whom she married August 18, 1974.

Services for Mrs. Peterson will be Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Burial will be at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.

Survivors of Edris Peterson, in addition to her husband, Clifford Peterson, are a sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Lawerence of Abilene, TX; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. E.A. Abernethy, Jr. of Enid, OK; nephews, Dr. Richard B. and Patricia Lawrence of Fort Worth, TX, Dr. E. A. and Anne Abernethy III and Mr. and Mrs. Dick and Vickie Abernethy of Enid, OK.
