HULSEY

Dr. Edward King Hulsey, age 84, died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in Oklahoma City. He was born April 2, 1927, in Oilton, Oklahoma, to Orbra Carroll and Bertha Mae Brooks Hulsey. He is considered a 1945 graduate of Oilton High School, but he enlisted in the Navy in December 1944 so didn"t get to graduate with his class. He served as a Pharmicist"s Mate 3rd class until August 1946. During this term of service, he earned a Victory Medal and an American Campaign Medal.

Dr. Hulsey then attended Central State University in Edmond on the G.I. Bill and graduated with a degree in science. He taught junior high science and coached basketball for a year in Edmond schools. During the Korean War, the Navy recalled him to service from 1950-52. He married Martha Jane Leith November 26, 1952, in Yale, Oklahoma. They lived and worked in Oklahoma City until 1956 when he was admitted to the Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. While in optometry school, he coached both the school"s basketball and softball teams.

After finishing optometry school in 1959, Dr. Hulsey completed an internship with an optometrist in Oklahoma City before he and Jane purchased a practice in Mangum. Last June, he retired after 50 years of providing professional eye care to the citizens of Mangum and the surrounding area. With five brothers and one sister, Dr. Hulsey served as his extended family"s optometrist as well.

Though he graduated from Central State and Jane graduated from OSU, Dr. Hulsey was always a University of Oklahoma Sooner fan and delighted in taking his kids and friends to football games throughout the years. He was also an avid golfer over the years, spending many hours at the city golf course and even winning the club championship at least once against younger players.

The Hulseys were formerly active members of First United Methodist Church and Dr. Hulsey served as a regular usher and on many church committees. Over the years, he served the community as mayor, Chamber of Commerce president and on both the hospital and school boards. He was named Mason of the year in 2010 and was a member of several civic clubs through the years.

One of Ed and Jane"s greatest honors was to serve as class parents for the MHS class of 1962 and they"ve been "Mom and Pop" to those "kids" ever since.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Howard, Buren and Buel. He is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Jeri Lou Calcote and husband Kevin of Mineral Wells, Texas; son, Michael Edward and wife Chasidy of Mangum; daughter, Jennifer Leith Reid and husband David of Edmond; brother, Orin, and wife Gwen, of Pampa, Texas; brother Garley of Oklahoma City; sister, Oleta Hazlip and husband, Bill, of Tennessee; eight grandchildren: Kenyon and Chad Calcote; Derek, Parker and Hannah Reid; and Dylon, Cason and Emma Hulsey.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, at First United Methodist Church of Mangum with Rev. Theo "Doc" Benson and Rev. Don Tabberer officiating. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Oilton, Oklahoma under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
