Obituary for Ella Mae Houck
"Moma" or "Granny", Ms. Ella Mae Houck, of Altus, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, Aug 19, 2020, at English Village Manor at the age of 98. She was born May 15, 1922, in Laurel Creek, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Lawrence Mayfield and Mary Ann Bowers eventually moving westward to Texas at the age of 18. Ella was preceded in death by her husband William Sidney Payne; two sons Walter Bradley and Emmitt Payne and daughter Mary Franklin. She is survived by her two sons, David Payne and Mike Payne; three daughters, Rebecca Moore, Barbara Palmer and Deborah Payne; 10 grandchildren, Wallace Franklin, Michael Moore, James Moss, William Moss, Robby Payne, Thomas Holt, Richard Carney Jr, James Payne, Samantha Wheatley and Mikey Payne. She also leaves behind a legacy of great grandchildren and many other family and friends who will deeply miss her. "Granny" or "Moma" was tirelessly raising children and grandchildren and would drop everything or put her life on hold to help those in need. She was a member of multiple church services to include Church of God and made the time to talk to anyone about the word of God. She was also a homemaker and home health nurse for many years. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, quilting, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. She always led by example and was a fiercely independent woman.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2020, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, with Brother Mike Fairchild officiating.
Burial will follow in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation for family will be on Thursday, August 20 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and family and friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Pallbearers will be David Payne, James Moss, William Moss, Robby Payne, Richard Carney Jr and Ben Wheatly.
