Obituary for Elmer Lee Shirley
Elmer Lee Shirley, 89, longtime resident of Eldorado, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2011.
Elmer was born March 17, 1921 in Marlow, Oklahoma to Joseph allen and Mary Adann (Cox) Shirley. He joined the United States Navy in March 1942. He proudly served on the USS Betelgeuse. He was involved in the invasion of Guadalcanal, Sicily, South France and Okinawa. He was Honorably Discharged November 15, 1945.
On March 17, 1943, Elmer and Marie Jones were united in marriage at the Baptist Parsonage in Durant, Oklahoma. After his discharged from the Navy, they moved to Eldorado where Elmer farmed. He also was the Foreman for Harmon County District 3 where he eventually retired. He was a Master Mason as well as a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Eldorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother and one sister.
Elmer is lovingly survived by his wife, Marie of the home in Eldorado; two daughters, Sharon Kay Kerr and her husband, Douglas of Dallas, Texas and Sandy Richardson and her husband Floyd Plopps of Edmond, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Jason and Tiffany Hatcher, Scott and Amy Booker, John and Andrena Mena, Shawn and Cheryl Kerr and Sunnie and Josh Cummings; and by eight great-grandchildren, Noah Booker, Jonathan Booker, Jasmine Cummings, Alexa Cummings, Kaylee Hatcher, Brayden Hatcher, Hadley Kerr and Ryder Kerr.
Services were held at 1:30 Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the Lowell-Tims Chapel of Eldorado with Rev. Bobby Jones officiating. Interment followed with Military Honors at the Eldorado Cemetery.
