SPENCE

Elsie Spence, age 100, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Mangum, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2010, at an Austin, Texas hospital.

Elsie grew up on a farm near Tuttle, Oklahoma as the eldest of 12 children born to Arthur and Flossie Elizabeth Butler Buck. She lived in Tuttle and Mangum, Oklahoma most of her life. Her husband was Reverend Tom Spence who pastored several churches in Oklahoma before serving as Associational Missionary of the Southwestern Region of the state. He was pastor of Russell Baptist Church for many years. Elsie was Director of the Girls' Auxiliary Camp at Lugert for a number of years during this time.

Elsie is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Leo and Vivian Spence, Doyal and Wanda Spence and Richard and Rita Spence. She has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. During the past seven years she has lived with son, Leo, and near her other sons and their families in Austin and Marble Falls, TX.

Elsie and Tom loved to fish and each year they would cook hush puppies and fish for an annual fish fry for the Baptist churches in the area. Elsie was an accomplished seamstress and prolific artist, specializing in landscape and floral paintings inspired by memories of life in the country. Elsie had many dear friends in Mangum and Russell and has tried to stay in touch during the years she lived in Austin. She loved to read and solve cryptic word puzzles while her eyesight remained. One of her passions in recent years was listening to audio-books made available through the Oklahoma and Texas Commissions for the Blind.

She was a foundational support for the academic and professional achievements of her sons, but the values she instilled in them by her example of kindness and caring are the most basic heritage she has bequeathed to them. Her unselfish spirit and wry sense of humor will be long remembered and her memory will be treasured by all.

Funeral services for Elsie Spence will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at the Russell Baptist Church with Dr. Dean Goodfellow officiating. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Tuttle, Oklahoma under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
