Ermalene Matthews, age 84, of Mangum, passed away Tuesday morning, November 10, 2009, at Plantation Village Care Center in Altus.
Mrs. Matthews was born in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on June 9, 1925, to Walter Sherman and Mabel Ophelia (Brown) Abrams. After graduating from McLoud High School in 1944, she moved to Greer County in 1947. Shortly thereafter, she married Willis Lowe "Pokey" Matthews on December 4, 1949, and they were married forty-two wonderful years before his death on July 27, 1992. For many years Ermalene farmed, with her husband, in the White Flat Community, where they made their home, until moving into Mangum in the late 1960"s. In the late 1980"s, she and Pokey retired from farming. Ermalene enjoyed farming, working in the yard, which she mowed until her mid 70"s, country music and being with and taking care of her granddaughters.
Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Mildred Estep; three brothers, Kenneth Abrams, Bob Abrams and Vernon Abrams, she is survived by one daughter, Janice Brendle of Mangum; two granddaughters, Amanda Reimer and husband Mike of Mangum and Alice Deurmyer and husband Chris of Walters; three great grandchildren, Brady Reimer, Thomas Reimer and Katie Deurmyer; one sister, Freda Bryan of Mangum; one brother-in-law, Wayne Estep of Mangum; one sister-in-law, Mary Abrams of Hobart and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Ermalene Matthews will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 12, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Mangum with Chaplin Erin Martinez and Chaplin Jesse Forrest officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
The family will greet friends at Greer Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6 until 7 p.m.
