Obituary for Ernestine Hale Frederick
Ernestine Hale Frederick passed away in Jackson County Memorial Hospital Sunday, May 9, 2004 from pneumonia following emergency abdominal surgery. She was a longtime Altus Resident, activist, civic leader and minister's wife.
Ernestine Hale was born to Ernest and Lucy (Doss) Hale on March 9, 1920 in Afton, Texas. She attended Spur High School and Texas Christian University. She married Joe B. Frederick on September 23, 1939. Mrs. Frederick helped her husband pastor churches in Llano, Grand Prairie, Marfa, Dallas and Perryton, Texas and also Altus. A pioneer in the limited field of women's theology, Mrs. Frederick pastored her own church in Notla, Texas and was a highly respected speaker on the national level for the Disciples of Christ denomination.
Mrs. Frederick was a retired teacher and belonged to numerous organizations and activities in the Altus and Oklahoma area involving education, literature and the arts. She was also a practicing minister, performing weddings and funerals throughout her long career.
Mrs. Frederick was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Joe B., in 1997 and her son Marion Paul in 1980. She is survived by her daughter Joan Frederick of San Antonio, Texas; her granddaughter Dahlia Denton of Austin, Texas; her sister, Marian Hale Nugent of Grand Prairie, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews and friends in the Altus community.
Family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Monday, May 10. Funeral services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in altus with the Rev. Doug Burr officiating. Interment will be in the Altus City Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Altus Lions Club or Western Oklahoma State College. Arrangements are with Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
