Evern Eugene "Gene" Bush, age 80, passed away early Sunday morning, January 12, 2014, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus.
Mr. Bush was born in Chichester, New York on December 2, 1934, to Ralph S. and Daisy M. (Smith) Bush. After leaving high school, Gene worked as a logger for two years, before joining the United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country for twenty-six years. During those years, Gene was stationed many places, but while stationed in Germany, he met the love of his life, Helga Engel, and they were married on January 26, 1959, and they spent the next fifty-four years together, before his death. After moving to Altus in 1976, Gene continued his job with the Air Force, retiring in 1980. Not one to sit still, Gene farmed, ran a grain elevator, sold storm cellars and finally worked for the civil service, cutting meat at the Altus AFB Commissary. In his spare time, Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting his black powder rifle and pistol, hanging out with his friends in Headrick and the VFW, and spending time with his family.
Preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Carl and two sisters, Lucille and Sina, he is survived by his wife Helga Bush, of the home; four children, Michael Bush and wife Sandy of Winder, Georgia, Everett Bush and wife Cindy of Corpus Christy, Texas, Cody Bush and wife Jennifer of Kingman, Arizona and Michele Bush of Omaha, Nebraska; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Sharon Groenwold of St. Augustine, Florida along with many other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with full military honors on the front yard of the funeral home. Memorial services and cremation have been entrusted to Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
