Floyd Curtis Howard "Sonny" Kuykendall, age 83, of Altus, passed away Friday afternoon, December 19, 2014, at Plantation Village Care Center, in Altus.
Mr. Kuykendall was born in Blair, Oklahoma on October 2, 1931, to Riley Nolan and Mable Claire (Wheeler) Kuykendall. After graduating from Blair High School, he joined the United States Marines Corps where he served 20 years in Korea, Hawaii, Parris Island and Vietnam. While stationed in Okinawa Japan, he met the love of his life, Midori Oura and they were married on June 29, 1964. Floyd eventually was assigned to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and he retired from there in 1970. After leaving the Marines, Floyd moved his family to Altus and he worked for two years at Goodyear. From 1973-1976, Floyd ran Kuykendall Gulf, in Mangum. In 1976, Floyd began a fifteen year career with the United States Postal service in Snyder and Lawton. When he finally retired, he loved to spend his time fishing and watching his children play ball.
Preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, R.L., Everett, Bobby, Charles Ray, John Wayne and one who died as an infant and three sisters, Dorothy Cook, Ruth Spearman and Mary Lou Stoups, he is survived by his wife, Midori, of the home; three children, Curtis Nolan Kuykendall and wife Gail of Little Elm, Texas, Betty Kuykendall Craig and husband Scott of Richardson, Texas and Chris Kuykendall and wife Tracey of Alexandria, Louisiana; seven grandchildren, Nicole Dent and husband Stacy of Little Elm, Texas, Lyndsey Andrews of McKinney, Texas, Larry Kuykendall and wife Jaimie of Altus, Lance Craig of Richardson, Ashleigh Hinshaw of Altus, Kaden and Karson Kuykendall of Alexandria, Louisiana; three great grandchildren, Savannah Dent, Ryder Dent and Charlotte Sue Kuykendall; one sister, Jackie Jean Mitchell and husband Richard of Rio Linda, California and one brother, Roy Dean Kuykendall and wife Mae of Framers Branch, Texas along with many other relatives and friends.
Memorial services for Floyd Kuykendall will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Altom officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
