Frances Ann Town, 78, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton.
Fran was born February 16, 1931, in Northampton, Massachusetts, to Harold and Ellen (Birge) Smith. She grew up in Northampton and had two brothers, Harold, Jr. and George, and one sister, Ida. Her elementary school years were spent in a one-room schoolhouse, and she later graduated from Northampton High School. Prior to meeting her husband in 1951, she worked as a switchboard operator for Bell Telephone.
Fran married Eugene A. Town May 9, 1953, in Northampton, after his return from the Korean Conflict, and they subsequently moved to Mountain Home, Idaho. They were stationed in England near the English Channel at a base called Bradford on Sea where they made many friends among the local people. Back from England, they were stationed in Klamath Falls, Oregon, for two years and then returned to England for another long tour. In 1965, she and Eugene were moved to K.I. Sawyer AFB near Marquette, Michigan, and then they later moved to Sacramento, California, where they made their home until they moved to Altus, Oklahoma, in 1992. She and Eugene came to Altus to visit their son Dale, who was stationed at Altus AFB, and they fell in love with the town and decided to move here and make it their home.
Frances was a retired Bank of America Loan Secretary. She had a passion for travel, loved art, and above all, home decorating. She was completely devoted to her husband Eugene and her son Dale and was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Altus.
Preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Harold Smith, Jr., one sister, Ida Smith, and a dear aunt, Betty Birge, Fran is survived by her loving husband, Eugene, of the home in Altus; one son, Dale Richard Town and wife Lillian Margaret, also of Altus; one brother, George Smith and wife Ginny of Easthampton, Massachusetts; several nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at Grace United Methodist Church, 620 S. Park Lane, Altus, Oklahoma. Reverend George Lupton will officiate. Services are entrusted to Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
