Freddie Gene Jones, age 81, of Granite, passed away early Thursday morning, January 23, 2014, at Baptist Medical Center, in Oklahoma City.
Mr. Jones was born on March 26, 1932, in Gray County Texas to Lawrence T. and Lettie Elizabeth (Downing) Jones. After attending Spring Creek School and Borger, Texas Schools, he graduated from Pampa, Texas in 1949. After working for Cabot Oil Company for nine years he moved to Midland, Texas where he met and married the love of his life, Margaret Jo Matheny, on February 5, 1960 and they spent the next fifty-three wonderful years together before his death. In 1975, the family moved to Artesia, New Mexico where Fred continued working in the oil and chemical industry. Moving to San Angelo, Texas in 1999, he and Jo retired to their lake house until moving to Granite in 2005, where they lived until his death. A longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, watching boxing on television and being involved with his grandchildren. Fred was a Bible scholar and was known for reading his Bible daily. A faithful member and deacon of the First Baptist Church, in Granite, Fred was ordained a deacon on May 15, 1974, at North Side Baptist Church, in Midland, Texas.
Preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, J.L. Jones, Lawrence Jones, Stayton Jones, Paul Wayne Jones and Bobby Lynn Jones and two sisters, Ruth Graham and Wanda Looper, he is survived by his wife, Jo, of the home; six children, Kathy Lynn Brown and husband Gary of Odessa, Texas, Pamla Kim Jones of Corinth, Texas, Gary Kent Jones and wife Sheryl of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Kevin P. Jones and wife Kellye of Tulsa, Dixi K. Campanella and husband Blaise of Artesia, New Mexico and Robin Kay Cockrum and husband Craig of Seguin, Texas; fifteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Fred Jones will be at 2 p.m., Monday, January 27, 2014, at the Granite First Baptist Church with Pastor Ben VanVacter and Pastor David Hogg officiating. Interment will follow at Granite City Cemetery under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Granite.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to Granite First Baptist Church, in memory of Fred Jones.
